From 5be397ed6fc2f7efb9063f3ce93634f230ccb047 Mon Sep 17 00:00:00 2001 From: Laurids Kern Date: Mon, 19 Oct 2026 19:40:11 +0200 Subject: [PATCH] feat(devices): show app crashes as a toast in the simulator panel Detect app crashes and surface them on the device they happened on, with actions to attach the crash or ask for a fix in chat. - iOS simulators report a crash the moment SpringBoard logs the exit, add the app's own last log lines about a second later, and replace them with the symbolicated .ips report once ReportCrash writes it. - Android collects FATAL EXCEPTION blocks and libc fatal signals from a narrow logcat stream. - Each visible simulator panel runs an app-only crash session, so the toast works without the Logs tool. Log sessions run the same watcher scoped to their app or process, and crash rows can be found with kind:crash. - Crash records carry a short `reason` so the UI never re-parses messages. --- .codex-plugin/plugin.json | 2 +- docs/mcp-tools.md | 1 + docs/telemetry.md | 2 + package-lock.json | 4 +- package.json | 2 +- scripts/smoke-package.mjs | 2 +- src/server/crash-reports.ts | 297 +++++++++++++++++++++++++ src/server/log-sessions.ts | 40 ++-- src/server/log-tools.ts | 18 +- src/server/native-logs.ts | 52 +++-- src/server/telemetry.ts | 8 + src/shared/logs.ts | 16 +- src/shared/version.ts | 2 +- src/ui/components/crash-toast.tsx | 55 +++++ src/ui/components/log-details.tsx | 13 +- src/ui/components/logs-view.tsx | 8 +- src/ui/components/simulator-view.tsx | 4 + src/ui/crash-monitor.ts | 191 ++++++++++++++++ src/ui/log-query.ts | 4 +- src/ui/logs-panel.ts | 3 +- src/ui/model-context.ts | 3 +- src/ui/simulator-panel.ts | 5 + src/ui/workspace-app.tsx | 1 + tests/crash-reports.test.ts | 313 +++++++++++++++++++++++++++ tests/logs-panel.test.ts | 2 +- tests/logs.test.ts | 6 +- tests/physical-ios-logs.test.ts | 3 +- tests/simulator-panel.test.ts | 2 +- 28 files changed, 994 insertions(+), 65 deletions(-) create mode 100644 src/server/crash-reports.ts create mode 100644 src/ui/components/crash-toast.tsx create mode 100644 src/ui/crash-monitor.ts create mode 100644 tests/crash-reports.test.ts diff --git a/.codex-plugin/plugin.json b/.codex-plugin/plugin.json index 1dac5374..d226f43f 100644 --- a/.codex-plugin/plugin.json +++ b/.codex-plugin/plugin.json @@ -1,6 +1,6 @@ { "name": "mobile-dev", - "version": "0.1.160", + "version": "0.1.161", "description": "Keep a simulator beside the chat while building, running, or debugging iOS and Android apps. The existing log send counter and error coverage remain in place. No log text, stack traces or device IDs go to Sentry. +Since 0.1.161, each visible simulator panel opens an app-only crash session for its booted iOS simulator or Android device, independent of Logs; log sessions run the same crash watcher scoped to their app or process. `logs.crash.detected` counts crash records, with `device_platform` and `crash_source`: `ios_exit` for SpringBoard's immediate crash-signal exit line, `ios_log` for the app's own crash message read from the unified log about a second later (uncaught exceptions, Swift fatal errors, React Native fatal JS errors; none for an external signal), `ios_report` for the `.ips` report written 30-45 seconds later, and `android_logcat` for `FATAL EXCEPTION` blocks and libc fatal signals. One iOS crash therefore usually records several sources. `logs.crash.parse` measures `.ips` parsing in milliseconds, the only expensive parse. Both use the `logs` surface and are recorded per crash because crashes are rare. In the UI, `ui.crash.toast_shown`, `ui.crash.attached`, `ui.crash.sent_to_chat`, `ui.crash.dismissed`, `ui.crash.report_attached` (a stack arriving for a toast already shown) and `ui.crash.watch_retry` count toast activity and session recovery; chat delivery time stays under `ui.logs.send`. Crash sessions long-poll for up to 20 seconds and pause reads while the document is hidden, sending only keep-alives. Crash messages, stack traces, app IDs, process names, report paths and device IDs stay local. + `ui.logs.session_expired` counts expired sessions that trigger automatic recovery. It uses the active Logs context without sending session IDs, error text or log content. `ui.logs.retention` measures bounded buffer updates in milliseconds. `ui.logs.evicted` counts rows removed locally to meet the shared row and text limits; `ui.logs.dropped` still counts only rows lost from the server buffer. Existing filter timing and row gauges cover the resulting list. These measurements contain no log text or source metadata. diff --git a/package-lock.json b/package-lock.json index bd6e876f..56f680dd 100644 --- a/package-lock.json +++ b/package-lock.json @@ -1,12 +1,12 @@ { "name": "codex-mobile-dev-plugin", - "version": "0.1.160", + "version": "0.1.161", "lockfileVersion": 3, "requires": true, "packages": { "": { "name": "codex-mobile-dev-plugin", - "version": "0.1.160", + "version": "0.1.161", "dependencies": { "@base-ui/react": "^1.8.0", "@fontsource-variable/inter": "^5.3.0", diff --git a/package.json b/package.json index c906332e..5115495e 100644 --- a/package.json +++ b/package.json @@ -1,6 +1,6 @@ { "name": "codex-mobile-dev-plugin", - "version": "0.1.160", + "version": "0.1.161", "private": true, "type": "module", "engines": { diff --git a/scripts/smoke-package.mjs b/scripts/smoke-package.mjs index ed652683..aafc7ae6 100644 --- a/scripts/smoke-package.mjs +++ b/scripts/smoke-package.mjs @@ -146,7 +146,7 @@ try { assert.deepEqual(workspace._meta["openai/ui"].entrypoints, [{ type: "global" }]); const workspaceResource = await client.readResource({ uri: workspace._meta.ui.resourceUri }); assert.ok(workspaceResource.contents[0].text.includes('data-view="workspace" data-layout="split"')); - for (const name of ["mobile_log_sources", "mobile_logs_session", "mobile_read_logs", "mobile_logs_keep_alive", "mobile_logs_close", "mobile_performance_sources", "mobile_cpu_session", "mobile_read_cpu", "mobile_cpu_close"]) { + for (const name of ["mobile_log_sources", "mobile_logs_session", "mobile_read_logs", "mobile_logs_keep_alive", "mobile_logs_close", "mobile_crashes_session", "mobile_performance_sources", "mobile_cpu_session", "mobile_read_cpu", "mobile_cpu_close"]) { assert.ok(tools.tools.some(tool => tool.name === name), `Missing developer tool: ${name}`); } const panel = await client.callTool({ name: "mobile_open_simulator", arguments: {} }, undefined, { timeout: 30000 }); diff --git a/src/server/crash-reports.ts b/src/server/crash-reports.ts new file mode 100644 index 00000000..e1a69111 --- /dev/null +++ b/src/server/crash-reports.ts @@ -0,0 +1,297 @@ +import { execFile } from "node:child_process"; +import { watch } from "node:fs"; +import type { FSWatcher } from "node:fs"; +import { readFile, stat } from "node:fs/promises"; +import { homedir } from "node:os"; +import { join } from "node:path"; +import { promisify } from "node:util"; +import type { CrashWatchTarget, LogRecord, NativeLogTarget } from "../shared/logs.ts"; +import { parseLogcat } from "./log-parsers.ts"; +import { adbPath, keepReading, runLogProcess } from "./native-logs.ts"; +import type { StopLogSource } from "./native-logs.ts"; +import { recordCrash } from "./telemetry.ts"; + +const execute = promisify(execFile); +export const iosCrashReportDirectory = join(homedir(), "Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports"); +const frameLimit = 60; +type Emit = (crash: LogRecord) => void; + +/** Watch one device for app crashes.
