Release linux artifacts

Hi,

Since I have the CI and build process in mind, would you be open to discuss releasing linux artifacts as part of the CI ? They already get built with qt6* (ubuntu 22 and 24) and qt5 (ubuntu 24) as part of the CI. This is quite cheap since it gets built.

I know of at least two people who would use that. (Granted, that includes me.)

On the side, I am studying how AppImages/Flatpaks work, but it isn't that straightforward with the QT and GL dependencies from my first research. It would be my end goal for linux users though, if you are interested in that.

Edit : let's drop flatpaks entirely, they raise maintenance issues. Just the binary builds and AppImages would be great actually. I'm trying to assemble an AppImage in a branch.

Wow, I did not expect that to be this quick.

This workflow produces a valid and running AppImage (tested on two of my linux laptops, ubuntu 24.04 and 26.04 flavors). Single-click DFTFringe on Linux. There's not a single code change needed.

I'll test on non-*buntu, non-gnome flavored distros like Fedora and report.

you might want to modify build-linux.yml instead creating a new workflow.

The PR message about new binaries could list all 3 installer/packages/appimage you name them

Yes, I wasn't sure if it would be attainable at all initially. If it is okay to have this new release process for you I will add it to build-linux.

For information, at the time I created the windows installer, I choose https://doc.qt.io/qtinstallerframework/ because it was supposed to work on both linux and Windows. I you have some time to look at it and compare with your current implementation it would be great.
Anyway if it works, it works... Open a PR and I will look at it.

My primary computer is ubuntu (24.04.4 LTS). Having an AppImage would be nice. But I don't want to QA the linux version on each release. On any release.

In general it would be nice. People often ask for mac or linux versions.

Why would we release a QT4 version? I'm hoping to build only QT6 some day. Was a typo in Lucas message. No Qt4

I'm curious about:
On windows, certain things are stored in the registry (class QSettings). Where are those on linux? google ai says they go into
~/.config/{organization}/{application}.conf (or .ini)
What do we have set for organization and application?
