Add --job-tag option propagated to the server in render_state - #350
Adding a simple job tag that does nothing except adds a job-tag metadata to langsmith. This is needed for benchmarks to make them work with explicit tests.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Added an optional job tag to label runs. Tags can be supplied through the command line or configuration, and numeric configuration values are converted to strings.
Job tags must contain 1–300 characters; invalid values produce an error.
The change adds a --job-tag argument with validation for command-line and configuration values. It passes the optional tag into RunState, which includes it in serialized state when set.
Changes: Job tag handling
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Parse and validate job tags plain2code_arguments.py, tests/test_arg_provenance.py
Adds --job-tag, converts supplied values to strings, and rejects empty values or values longer than 300 characters. Validates merged configuration values and tests parsing, precedence, conversion, and rejection.
Pass and serialize job tags plain2code.py, plain2code_state.py, tests/test_plain2code_state.py, tests/test_render_finished_report.py, tests/test_terminal_attachment.py
Passes args.job_tag to RunState. The state stores the optional value and includes it in to_dict() only when set. Updates tests and argument fixtures.
The PR is broadly mergeable, with a minor help-text correction recommended before or shortly after merge.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to 58a6c
The tag is bounded, optional and carried as request data without changing client-side credentials, destinations or render identity. No introduced security vulnerability was established. Server-side handling and replay metadata semantics remain unverified.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The demonstrated new exposure is caller-controlled metadata on requests carrying that invocation's RunState. Client code does not use the tag to choose credentials, destinations or another render identity. Server-side effects and downstream trace retention remain outside the verified scope.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — Caller-controlled CLI or configuration text crosses into the existing API JSON payload. Validation bounds its character length and rejects empty values; the client transports it as a data value rather than interpolating it into the request URL or headers. These controls do not establish downstream validation or authorization.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — The field is owned by each RunState instance and omitted when unset. It does not participate in the local success, cancellation or failure state transitions, and ordinary HTTP retries retain the same serialized metadata.

Full details: Title check
Explanation
The title names the primary change: a new --job-tag option whose value is propagated to the server in render_state. The raw summary confirms the option, the 300-character limit, config support, and the RunState changes. The title is specific and matches the PR objectives. It does not cover config.yaml support or the length limit, which is acceptable for a title.

Explanation
Docstring coverage is 0.00% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 6 functions across 7 files.

Cover the empty and maximum-length cases for both input sources.
job_tag_string rejects empty values and accepts exactly 300 characters, but the current tests cover neither boundary. These cases would detect removal of the empty-value check or an accidental change from > to >=.
