ci(release): record stable releases in Linear - #359
Each stable release is recorded in the team's Linear release pipeline, and the Slack "published" notice links it. Pre-releases are skipped.
PRs: GitHub's commit-to-PR lookup for the commits since the previous release, counting PRs merged into main, so rebase merges count. Linear attaches the issues linked to those PRs.
Notes: the GitHub release text. Every #N is written out as a full link to this repo, because Linear matches a bare #N against every repo it knows.
Non-fatal: a failure doesn't touch the release, and the Slack notice says recording failed.
The script, .github/scripts/record-linear-release.cjs, is checked with unit tests and with dry runs against this repo's releases.
To switch it on:
LINEAR_ACCESS_KEY is already set. This replaces the commented-out job.
Set the LINEAR_RELEASE_MODE variable to live. Until then the job only logs what it would send.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Successful stable releases published to PyPI are now recorded in Linear, with the release link included in the Slack notification when available.
Slack notifications report when Linear release recording fails. Pre-release notifications remain separate.
Each stable release syncs to Linear with the PRs merged since the previous
one, found through GitHub so rebase merges count, and the GitHub release
text as notes, its #N references linked to this repo. Log-only until
LINEAR_RELEASE_MODE is live.

Walkthrough
The publish workflow now runs a Linear release script after successful stable releases. The script gathers release and pull request details, builds release notes, and records a release in Linear when live mode is enabled. The stable-release Slack notification includes the Linear URL or reports a recording failure.
Changes: Linear release recording
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Release context and notes .github/scripts/record-linear-release.cjs
The script selects a prior release as a base, gathers merged pull requests targeting the release branch, and formats pull request notes. It links pull request references while leaving code, existing links, tags, and URLs unchanged.
Linear release input and recording .github/scripts/record-linear-release.cjs
The script uses GitHub release notes when configured, or generates notes from pull requests. It builds the Linear release input. In live mode, it records the release and sets the release-url output; otherwise, it logs the proposed input.
Publish workflow and Slack notification .github/workflows/publish-to-pypi.yml
A new job runs the script after publishing for non-pre-releases. The stable-release Slack notification waits for this job and includes its URL when available, or a warning when recording fails.

Merge Risk: Low · previous review 9a96a
Stable releases are recorded in Linear without affecting the PyPI publish, and the recording job is log-only until live mode is enabled. Before merging, add a step timeout so a hung API call cannot hold back the Slack release notice. Also confirm whether the first live release should link PRs from before the pipeline's first recorded release.

Explanation
The title "ci(release): record stable releases in Linear" matches the main change. The PR adds a script and a workflow job that record stable (non-pre-release) releases in Linear and links the Slack notice to that record. The title is short, specific, and uses a conventional commit scope.

- Line 83: Update the `!base` fallback so a missing Linear base uses the
previous stable GitHub release as the base instead of returning no PRs. Reuse
the existing release-selection mechanism, then apply the existing ancestry
checks before determining which PRs to include.
Review comments at @.github/workflows/publish-to-pypi.yml:
- Around line 223-225: Set a finite step timeout on the “Record release in
Linear” step in the Linear recording workflow, such as five minutes, so a
stalled API call cannot delay the notify job indefinitely. Preserve
continue-on-error so the existing failure warning is still reported when the
step times out.

A hung Linear or GitHub call would otherwise hold the job, and the Slack
notice that waits for it, until the 6-hour job limit. Linear calls also
give up after 30 seconds.
- Leave #N inside fenced code alone.
- A new tag on an already released commit gets no PRs.
- Fail in live mode without an access key, and when Linear reports a
failed sync.
- Warn in Slack when the job fails before the step runs.
