What happened?
I temporarily downgraded from v13 to v12 by uninstalling the update, then later reinstalled v13 (currently on the alpha channel). Since this downgrade/reinstall cycle, on secondary profiles that never had contacts saved (conversations only existed with raw phone numbers), every one of those senders is now permanently stuck showing as "unknown sender", and this persists even after going back to v13.
This is not just a display issue, it fully blocks messaging with these numbers:
- I cannot send a message to an "unknown sender".
- There is no option to turn an "unknown sender" into a contact from within the Messaging app.
- I cannot create a new contact directly from the Messaging app on the secondary profile.
- Even if I manually create the matching contact in the Contacts app on that same secondary profile, the Messaging app never picks it up, the sender stays "unknown" and I still cannot send a message.
The main/owner profile is unaffected and works normally, with or without saved contacts.
I also tried creating a brand-new profile, granting it SMS and Phone permissions, to see if the issue was specific to the existing secondary profiles or would also affect a fresh one. The result is the same: contacts are still shown as "unknown sender" in the Messaging app.
Additionally, when trying to use a different SMS app (fossyfy, Google message) instead of the default Messaging app.
For fossyfy only a very small number of contacts show up at all, mostly businesses (ads/spam senders). Oddly, there is exactly one unsaved contact that still works correctly and displays its phone number normally. All other contacts don't even appear in the other SMS app.
For Google Messages, all phone numbers show up correctly, along with the contacts I created via the Contacts app (now displayed with their contact name instead of just the raw number). If I grant SMS permission to Play Services, I'm able to send SMS messages from Google Messages without issue.
