What

Read complete plan line-item pages (follow pagination to the end) and isolate the pagination guard failures in tests.

Why

A partial page would silently undercount line items when joined to comparison rows by line_item_id over the Public Archera CommitmentPlanLineItem schema (account_id, offer.provider_offering_id, selected_commitment) (#434).

Test evidence

Synthetic httptest fixtures only; no live Archera calls.

  • cd pkg && gofmt -l . clean, go vet ./insurance/... clean
  • cd pkg && go test ./insurance/... ok; go test -race -short ./insurance/... ok
  • cd pkg && go build ./... ok
  • Local golangci-lint could not run (built with go1.26, repo needs go1.27); relying on CI lint.

Stack

PR 3 of 3. Base: feat/434-insurance-line-item-decode (PR 2). Merge in order.

Closes #434

📝 Walkthrough

The insurance client now retrieves plan line items across validated pagination pages. It checks plan IDs, pagination metadata, stable totals, row counts, duplicate IDs, and aggregate response size. It exposes successful response headers through an internal helper and returns no partial rows on failure.

Changes: Insurance line-item retrieval

Layer / File(s) Summary
Retrieve paginated line items
pkg/insurance/client.go, pkg/insurance/line_items_client.go, pkg/insurance/line_items_client_test.go
Client.LineItems validates the plan ID and each page, then returns all rows only when retrieval succeeds. Tests cover pagination, response closure, validation failures, and page-level errors.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

For [#434], the reviewed head strictly decodes line-item identity, validates UUIDs, preserves nullable fields, rejects unsupported enum values, and retains selected commitment values. Client.LineItems validates the plan UUID, requests ordered pages, parses and checks X-Pagination, validates row counts, detects duplicate IDs, enforces a shared response limit, and returns no rows on any page error. Tests cover successful pagination, empty results, malformed metadata, inconsistent pages, duplicate IDs, page failures, cancellation, and invalid plan IDs.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changes remain within [#434]. The getWithHeaders helper supports pagination metadata access. The new client method and tests implement and verify line-item pagination and failure handling. The diff contains no live-call integration, purchase logic, or eligibility-table changes.

Independent review at b0f66cd

Verdict: changes requested (test gaps on guards that bound the page loop; no production defect reproduced at this SHA).

Source of truth: the live Public OpenAPI schema (the two local spec files named in the brief were absent; I fetched the schema from the vendor's unauthenticated openapi endpoint and parsed it). PaginationMetadata has seven integer fields; page min 1, page_size max 100; order_by=id is in the enum.

Findings

  1. Medium (test gap), line_items_client.go:48-66: validateEmpty is untested. With it removed, a response total=0, total_pages=<huge> makes LineItems request pages until TotalPages (the 8 MiB shared byte budget barely shrinks on []), so this guard is the only thing bounding the loop for that shape. Same for the TotalPages/LastPage != ceil(total/100) check (:55): with it removed, total=250, total_pages=2 with 100+50 rows returns 150 of 250 rows as a success (partial result). Add tests for both shapes.
  2. Low (test gap): these mutants survive: drop Page != requested, drop FirstPage != 1, drop Total < 0, drop LastPage != pages, accept next_page: null, and drop the isUUID(planID) guard in LineItems (:90), which stops path injection into planPath and has no test.
  3. Info: there is no explicit max-pages constant. Termination relies on TotalPages consistency plus the shared 8 MiB budget (:95, :133-135), so a plan whose line items exceed 8 MiB in total fails closed rather than paginates. That is safe, but worth a comment or a named constant.
  4. Info: the empty-result header shape (total_pages 0 or 1, first_page 1) is accepted from fixtures only; I could not confirm the live server's value without an API key.

Verified: X-Pagination is required, parsed strictly (readFields, no null on required counters, int64 overflow rejected); page numbers must match the requested page; totals must not change between pages; row count per page must equal the metadata; duplicates across pages (case-insensitive) fail; any page error returns nil, err with all bodies closed; second-page HTTP errors are redacted (test with key in body); the byte budget is shared across pages and covered by the size test; getWithHeaders reuses the existing no-redirect, no-retry client (client.go:104, one hc.Do per call). go test ./insurance/... passes (366).

Mutation results (scratch copy, each reverted): killed: reset byte budget per page, drop totals-changed, drop cross-page duplicate, drop row-count check, terminate after page 1, never terminate, drop next_page and previous_page checks, drop page_size. Survivors are listed in findings 1-2. Removing the whole header validation fails the missing-header cases.

Independent adversarial review: CLEAN at b0f66cd66808a5cd08e7c4812b9488d2f9f89f9a (claude-go-pr-merge-2; non-author reviewer, diff f7679087..b0f66cd6).

  • LineItems (line_items_client.go:96-125) returns nil plus an error on any page failure; partial results never escape. X-Pagination validated per page (page, first/last/total pages, next/previous consistency); per-page row count must match, so an empty page with total > 0 errors; totals changing between pages and cross-page duplicate IDs error. The loop is bounded by first.TotalPages (no server cursor, no infinite loop) and by a shared 8 MiB budget that errors instead of truncating. Page-2 HTTP errors and context cancellation propagate (TestClientLineItemsSecondPageTransportAndCancellation, TestClientLineItemsSecondPageFailure). Query via url.Values.Encode(), planID must pass isUUID; auth and redaction reuse setAuth/sanitizeDecodeError; get delegates to the new getWithHeaders.
  • Mutations: stopping after page 1 fails four pagination tests; disabling the totals-changed check fails TestClientLineItemsSecondPageFailure (only one test covers it).
  • Non-blocking: the 8 MiB cap is per plan across pages, so very large plans fail loud; fixed page_size=100 assumes the server honors it (else the metadata check fails loud); planPath interpolates orgID unescaped (pre-existing, not from this stack).

Local verification (macOS; httptest/JSON fixture evidence only, no live Archera calls): (cd pkg && GOWORK=off go test -race -short ./...) pass at 829ae14, f767908 and b0f66cd; at b0f66cd make build, make vet and go build ./... in all five modules (go.work) pass. No Archera schema or fixture exists in the repo, so field names and pagination parameters were not checked against the vendor schema (gap recorded).

Full CI pending a retarget to main after #436 merges. CR skipped: quota (review skipped on non-default base). Closes #434; labels mirror it.

Review at b0f66cd addressed; branch restacked onto the updated #436 head (e385da8), new head 678ed1a. Fixes are new commits 85bdddf and 678ed1a (force-with-lease only for the restack).

  1. validateEmpty: test with total=0, total_pages=1000000 fails fast after one request ("invalid empty pagination"). TotalPages/LastPage consistency: tests for total=250,total_pages=2 (with last_page 2 and with last_page 3) fail after one request ("inconsistent page totals").
  2. Surviving mutants now killed by TestClientLineItemsPaginationGuards and TestClientLineItemsRejectsNonUUIDPlanBeforeRequest: Page != requested, FirstPage != 1, Total < 0, LastPage != pages, TotalPages != pages, next_page: null, isUUID(planID) guard (zero requests for a non-UUID plan). Each mutant was applied in a scratch copy, confirmed to fail a test, and reverted.
  3. Info (max-pages constant): not changed; termination relies on TotalPages consistency plus the shared 8 MiB budget, as the review noted.
  4. Info (live empty-result header shape): unverified without an API key, unchanged.

Local: gofmt, go vet, go test and go test -race -short on ./insurance/... pass, go build ./... ok. Manual ci.yml dispatch on this branch at 678ed1a: success (run 38885262434). Synthetic httptest fixtures only.

Independent review at 678ed1a

Verdict: no actionable findings. Pass-1 findings are resolved.

Resolution check (new tests in line_items_client_test.go, TestClientLineItemsPaginationGuards and TestClientLineItemsRejectsNonUUIDPlanBeforeRequest):

  • validateEmpty (total 0 with huge total_pages) and the total_pages/last_page consistency checks are now tested, including the 250-row partial-result shape. Each case asserts the error text and exactly one request.
  • Previously surviving mutants now killed: drop Page != requested, FirstPage != 1, Total < 0, LastPage != pages, TotalPages != pages, whole consistency block, empty check, next_page: null accepted, and the isUUID(planID) guard (asserts zero requests for ../other/plan).

Remaining survivors, both low and non-blocking:

  1. || p.Page > pages (line_items_client.go:55) is redundant: the loop only requests pages up to TotalPages and Page must equal the requested page, so it is unreachable. Candidate for removal, or leave as a cheap invariant.
  2. previous_page: null is still accepted (the next_page: null case is covered). The schema declares integer only; harmless because the value is only cross-checked when present.

No change to the earlier info items (implicit page bound from the 8 MiB shared budget; live empty-result header shape unconfirmed without a key). Suite passes.

Delta review: CLEAN at 678ed1a902cbbd8bce6cab5cb31d374dcc66777f (claude-go-pr-merge-2, same non-author reviewer as the b0f66cd6 verdict).

  • git range-diff 829ae14e..b0f66cd6 e385da8b..678ed1a9: the existing pagination commits are = (00bb710 = 7aced86, b0f66cd = 5003c38); only new commits 85bdddf and 678ed1a. The lone f767908 < line is the commit moving into the base, not a content change.
  • New TestClientLineItemsPaginationGuards and TestClientLineItemsRejectsNonUUIDPlanBeforeRequest assert single request, nil rows and zero requests for a non-UUID plan. Mutation: removing the isUUID(planID) guard fails the latter.
  • Earlier note re-checked: dropping total_pages from the changed-totals comparison survives, but it is an equivalent mutant because validate() already pins total_pages to ceil(total/100) per page; the total half is covered.
  • Local verification (macOS, fixture/mock only) at 678ed1a: (cd pkg && GOWORK=off go test -race -short ./...) all ok; make build, make vet pass.

Still after #436; then retarget to main and CI there. CR skipped: quota (non-default base). Closes #434.

Automated review of 678ed1a: no blocking findings and CI is green. Ready to merge.
Pagination validation is strict and consistent with the decoder. Partial results never escape, bodies are closed, and the cumulative 8 MiB budget is tracked correctly. Tests cover the error and second-page paths. No blocking issues found.

  • (optional) pkg/insurance/line_items_client.go:142: The 8 MiB response budget is shared across all pages. A very large but valid plan fails with a size error even though each page is small. This is safe and fail-loud, but a per-page cap may be the intended design; worth a doc comment.
  • (optional) pkg/insurance/line_items_client.go:170: page_size is the literal "100" while lineItemsPageSize is a constant. Format the constant so the request and the validation cannot drift apart.

Posted by a read-only review sweep. It stays silent on this commit and re-reviews only after a new push.

Build page_size from lineItemsPageSize.

rowCount and validate use lineItemsPageSize to calculate the expected row counts. The request sends the literal "100". If someone changes the constant and not the literal, every request that spans more than one page fails the row-count check.
