Summary

Bump cloud-commitments-go (pkg, providers/aws, providers/azure, providers/gcp) from ad67030387e4 to 740dfbd72456, and plan ladder tranches in commitment dollars, adopting cloud-commitments-go#349.

Why

go#349: the ladder bought on-demand baseline dollars 1:1 as commitment dollars, over-buying by 1/(1-discount). go#353 made Allocate convert gaps with per-layer commitment rates. Every go commit since then requires this migration, and #799 (Archera) needs a newer pin. #968, #969 and #972 made all readers basis-aware first; this PR switches the writers.

Changes

  • executeLadderRun fetches rates through ladder.CommitmentRateCapability, outside the transaction:
    • a missing capability or a fetch error makes the run Errored, and nothing is persisted;
    • an empty map gives a Hold-only run that still persists;
    • the map goes to Allocate unchanged, with no platform default, no 1:1 and no 0.
  • InFlight is built from the fix(ladder): net in-flight tranches per row basis in on-demand-equivalent dollars #968 per-row netting rows. A row on a layer the capability doesn't support fails loud.
  • buildTrancheDBRows writes amount_basis=commitment with the tranche's commitment_rate, and errors when the rate is empty.
  • Plan JSON gap and ladder_runs.gap_usd_hr are on-demand-equivalent (the sum of OnDemandEquivalentUSDPerHour), comparable with target and existing. total_hourly_commit and action amounts are commitment dollars.

Visible behaviour changes

  • Only the EC2 Instance SP layer gets planned tranches. The AWS provider supplies no ComputeSP or ConvertibleRI rate yet, so Allocate holds those layers with a reason instead of guessing a rate.
  • MaxHourlyCommitPerRun now caps commitment dollars, which is what would actually be bought.
  • The bump also pulls in, from go ad67030..740dfbd:
    • Azure SP recommendations are now real Benefit Recommendations calls;
    • Azure Synapse collection (one fan-out test now expects 5 Azure services);
    • AWS SP commitment precision and recurring-cost fixes, MemoryDB in the recommendation set, and EC2 RIs priced as Convertible;
    • GCP SKU pagination and CUD pricing fixes;
    • scorer break-even filtering and recfilter coverage/engine filters;
    • account-scoped ladder baselines.
  • No migration, API change or IAM change is needed:
    • ce:GetSavingsPlansPurchaseRecommendation is already granted to the lambda and fargate roles;
    • the Azure container app already has Cost Management Reader.
  • No money moves. The ladder executor has no production caller (ClaimDueLadderTranches, PurchaseLayer and ReshapeBuffer are referenced only in tests), so runs write only plan rows. Existing-coverage units remain a separate pre-existing bug, fix(ladder): existing Savings Plan coverage is commitment dollars but the target is on-demand-equivalent #946, which blocks executor enablement.

Verification

  • Fail-before: with every rate forced to 1.0, TestExecuteLadderRun_RateHalfPersistsCommitmentDollars fails (expected 5, got 10, rate "1" instead of "1/2").
  • New tests:
    • gap OD (10) versus total commitment (5);
    • a missing capability or a fetch error gives Errored;
    • an empty map gives Hold-only;
    • an unsupported in-flight layer fails;
    • an empty rate errors;
    • amend then reload of a rate-0.5 row keeps its native amount (integration).
  • Mutations killed: rates forced to 1.0, and the basis written as on_demand.
  • go build ./..., go vet ./... and go vet -tags integration ./... are clean, and go mod tidy -diff is clean.
  • go test ./internal/... ./cmd/... passes.
  • Ladder integration tests in config, purchase and server pass against a native local PostgreSQL 17 on loopback.
  • Local golangci-lint can't run here (toolchain mismatch), so CI lint is authoritative.

Stack: base is #972, then #969, then #968. Refs #799, refs LeanerCloud/cloud-commitments-go#349.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Improvements
    • Ladder plans now preserve commitment amounts and rates when saving in-flight tranches, rather than converting them to on-demand totals.
    • Plan gaps are reported in on-demand-equivalent dollars, while saved tranche amounts retain their commitment basis.
    • Ladder planning reports an error when commitment rates are unavailable or cannot be retrieved, or when a tranche lacks a rate.

📝 Walkthrough

Ladder runs now retrieve commitment rates and allocate individual in-flight tranches. Plan gaps use on-demand-equivalent dollars, while persisted tranche amounts use commitment dollars with a basis and rate. Provider dependencies and related scheduler test fixtures and expectations also changed.

Changes: Ladder planning and related updates

Layer / File(s) Summary
Provider versions and scheduler test updates
go.mod, internal/scheduler/recommendation_completeness_integration_test.go, internal/scheduler/scheduler_test.go
Provider module versions changed. Scheduler test fixtures now allow Amazon MemoryDB Service, calculate recurring monthly cost from the commitment and term, and expect five failed Azure recommendation services.
Rate retrieval and tranche allocation
internal/server/handler_ladder.go, internal/server/handler_ladder_rates_test.go, internal/server/handler_ladder_test.go
Ladder runs fetch commitment rates and pass them with in-flight tranches to allocation. Tests cover rate retrieval errors, empty rate maps, unsupported in-flight layers, and rate-based allocations.
Gap units and commitment-basis persistence
internal/server/handler_ladder.go, internal/server/handler_ladder_rates_test.go, internal/server/handler_ladder_test.go, internal/server/handler_ladder_lock_integration_test.go, internal/config/store_postgres_ladder_basis_integration_test.go
Plan gaps are summed in on-demand-equivalent units. Tranche rows require a commitment rate and store commitment-dollar amounts with commitment basis and rate. Tests cover persistence and reload behavior.

The planning code appears correct, but a non-unit in-flight rate is not protected by a server-path test. This is a bounded test gap, not a demonstrated production failure.

Independent review verdict: CLEAN at e71d75d

Reviewer: fresh Claude agent (Sonnet, high effort), not the author, cold brief. It reviewed the diff against #972's head 57c3dd56, and the PR body was treated as a claim. Coordinator: claude-cc-reviewer.

Blocking findings: none.

Non-blocking notes:

  1. Test gap: internal/server/handler_ladder.go:372-377. Forcing the in-flight Rate: 1 instead of r.Rate survives the internal/server suite. No unit test feeds a non-1 in-flight rate through plan() into Allocate. The code is correct, and the store side plus TestLadderLock_MixedBasisReachesActualPlanner (integration) cover it. A unit test with an in-flight rate of 1/2 would pin it.
  2. Precision: amount_usd_hr is NUMERIC(20,6) while commitment_rate is an exact RatString. Re-netting a rounded amount by an exact rate errs by under 1e-6 $/hr per tranche. This is negligible, and LadderInFlightRow already rounds in the safe direction.
  3. The body's visible-behaviour notes are accurate:
    • only the EC2 Instance SP layer gets rates from GetCommitmentRates;
    • the Compute and Convertible layers are held with a reason;
    • runs with no tranches persist with a Hold-only result.

What was attacked and how (local macOS; Docker Postgres for integration; no purchases):

  • Bump: pkg and providers/{aws,azure,gcp} move from 20261012205319-ad67030387e4 to 20261015143912-740dfbd72456, and go.sum changes by 4+4 lines. The new pkg/ladder sources were read. The two pins were not diffed, so the body's list of changes inside the bump is not independently checked. go build/go vet pass, so there are no API breaks.

  • Rate direction and storage:

    • allocate_units.go requires a rate in (0,1], with commitment = OD × r and in-flight od = commitment / r.
    • The tranche's CommitmentRate is alloc.Rate.RatString(), and the writer stores amount_basis='commitment' with that same rate. Amount, basis and rate therefore come from one tranche.
  • Fail loud: each of these errors out:

    • a capability without CommitmentRateCapability;
    • a GetCommitmentRates error;
    • an empty rate in buildTrancheDBRows;
    • nil InFlight or CommitmentRates;
    • an unsupported-layer in-flight row;
    • an out-of-range rate.

    Migration 000121's CHECK rejects a commitment basis without a rate. There is no OD fallback, and this PR adds no migration.

  • Run units: total_hourly_commit is the sum of tranches (commitment $). gap sums OnDemandEquivalentUSDPerHour (OD), like the target. The amend cap compares within one run, so it uses a single basis.

  • go build ./... && go vet ./... && go test -count=1 ./internal/config/... ./internal/api/... ./internal/server/... ./internal/purchase/... passes.

  • go test -tags integration -run Ladder ./internal/config/ ./internal/server/ passes. The only SKIP is TestPostgresStoreDB_LadderArming, which needs LADDER_ARMING_TEST_DATABASE_URL and is unrelated. The new mixed-basis tests ran and passed.

  • Mutation probes on handler_ladder.go:

    • Killed: OD basis written instead of commitment, rate dropped, gap summed from commitment gaps, and stored rate "2".
    • Survived: in-flight rate forced to 1 (note 1).

…t dollars

Bump pkg and the aws, azure and gcp providers to 740dfbd72456 (go#349
allocator). executeLadderRun now fetches commitment rates through
CommitmentRateCapability outside the transaction: a missing capability
or a fetch error errors the run, an empty map gives a Hold-only run.
In-flight rows go to Allocate as InFlightTranche; a row on an
unsupported layer fails loud.

Tranches persist basis=commitment with the rate they were sized with
(empty rate errors). Plan gap and ladder_runs.gap_usd_hr sum the
on-demand-equivalent gap; total_hourly_commit stays commitment dollars.
The Azure recommendation fan-out now has five services, so its test
expectation moves from four to five.

Retargeted to main after #972 merged (f38deb5) and rebased with git rebase --onto origin/main 57c3dd56. git range-diff: 1: e71d75d4 = 1: c758788e, so the commit is identical. go build ./... and go vet ./internal/... pass on the rebased tree, which now includes #972's lint and e2e fixes. The CLEAN verdict carries over to c758788. Merge waits on CI at this head. (claude-cc-reviewer)

CI blocking at c758788 (claude-cc-reviewer): Integration Tests fail deterministically, twice: internal/scheduler TestAWSRecommendationCompletenessPersistence (nearly every subtest) and TestAWSRecommendationSourceAccountPersistence (run 38915300513). Main is green at adcd80c without this PR, so the go module bump (ad67030387e4 → 740dfbd72456) changed behaviour these tests depend on. An implementer is root-causing it and will fix it with new commits (or report it if it's an upstream go regression). The verdict is withheld until the fix gets a delta review.

The bumped go module also queries MemoryDB (service name "Amazon MemoryDB Service") and computes Savings Plan recurring cost as (hourly x 8760 x years - upfront) / (12 x years). The fixture rejected the MemoryDB call and expected hourly x 730; allow the service and expect the new formula.

Delta review: CLEAN at 5948e4b

Same independent reviewer, delta c758788e..5948e4b8 only (internal/scheduler/recommendation_completeness_integration_test.go). Both changes follow intended behaviour in the go bump, checked against the pin 740dfbd72456; neither is a go regression.

  1. MemoryDB: go providers/aws/recommendations/client.go:403 now queries common.ServiceMemoryDB, and converters.go:26 maps it to "Amazon MemoryDB Service". The fake Cost Explorer allow-list (:71) adds exactly that name.
  2. Savings Plans monthly cost: parser_sp.go:150-167 spRecurringMonthlyCost = (hourly*8760*years - upfront)/(12*years) (all-upfront gives 0, and a negative result errors) replaces hourly*730. The test computes the expected value from that formula per term, exactly, with no tolerance.
  • Not weakened: require.Zero(t, fixture.unexpected.Load()) (:163) still holds, unlisted services still count as unexpected, and the cost check is an exact Equal.
  • Run: go test -tags integration -run 'TestAWSRecommendation(Completeness|SourceAccount)Persistence' ./internal/scheduler/ with Docker: all 24 subtests and SourceAccountPersistence pass, with 0 SKIP.
  • Non-blocking: MemoryDB is already referenced in internal/commitmentopts, purchase execution/manager, openapi and the frontend. Confirming that scheduler per-service gating and the UI list include it is a follow-up.

The stack verdict now covers 5948e4b. Merge waits on CI at this head. (claude-cc-reviewer)

The specific coverage gap remains supported. ladderStatefulStore.PlanAndSaveLadderRun converts every scheduled tranche to Rate: 1, so the reachable server path cannot detect a regression that overwrites a non-unit in-flight rate before Allocate. Existing non-unit tests cover planned tranche sizing, not this in-flight caller path. Adding a stateful test with a non-unit stored CommitmentRate and an assertion on the resulting allocation is a material coverage improvement.
