Remove organization PR templates in favor of canonical guidance #10
Description
Describe the change
Remove GitHub PR-template distribution from this public organization-defaults repository in existing MSXOrg/.github#8. The user explicitly selected: "Remove central defaults too; use canonical PR-format guidance only". Authors use canonical MSX PR-format instructions; neither the organization default nor repository-local copies auto-populate descriptions.
Acceptance criteria
- No actual GitHub PR-template file remains in the candidate at the root,
.github, ordocs, including case variants of single-file names and any files insidePULL_REQUEST_TEMPLATEdirectories. - The central fallback is deleted without creating a replacement template, generated scaffold, or repository-local duplicate.
- Direct README and contribution guidance links authors to canonical MSX PR-format instructions rather than an inherited or copied template; the audience-first release-range-first contract remains owned by canonical documentation.
- Other community defaults, issue forms, client context routes, media, and repo-specific guidance remain unchanged apart from those directly coupled authoring links.
- PR PR authors use canonical guidance without repository templates #8 closes only this Task, records the user-directed reversal, exact current no-file source correspondence, complete current-head verification/review, and actual readiness blockers. It stays draft while required source/check/review gates are incomplete.
Constraints and non-goals
The original template-distribution implementation is superseded by the user decision; its commits and audit comments are retained, not amended or discarded. This Task does not revise the canonical docs repository or the separately owned MSXOrg/.github#12 validator/workflow/test paths. Do not add a replacement template, plugin marketplace, PSModule defaults, release sender, date strategy, or migration guide. Do not merge or change live enforcement, labels, tags, or rulesets.
Technical decisions
The current isolated inventory contains .github/pull_request_template.md as its only actual PR-template file. Delete it. Replace its directly coupled README.md paragraph and add a concise canonical PR-format pointer to .github/CONTRIBUTING.md, preserving all other guidance. Use canonical PR Format for the actual title/body and complete description example, while Repository Standard owns the prohibition on GitHub PR-template files. The verified no-file candidate is MSXOrg/docs#209 at bc03a5992615f65d1d5346dc48e7506e80b8b6ca; complete-description-example replaces the obsolete copy-template anchor. The source PR is ready but unmerged, and its Task remains open; source correspondence is not a claim of landing. Do not call the draft producer shipped or implemented while it still distributes templates. Keep native source relationships authoritative; do not close unrelated or already-delivered issues.
For this documentation-only removal, inspect tracked and on-disk GitHub-recognized variants before and after deletion, check that unrelated files are unchanged, run the available shared Markdown linter and diff checks, and request a new full Copilot review at the actual PR head. The separate CI owner receives the exact removed path and owns adapting its validation contract.
Implementation plan
- Inspect the complete candidate inventory and confirm a no-template assertion fails while the existing fallback remains.
- Delete all actual PR-template files and revise only directly coupled README/contribution guidance; commit and push the precise removal on the existing branch.
- Reconcile the existing PR description and this Task with verified canonical no-file guidance, source dependencies, and the exact removal scope.
- Verify zero tracked/on-disk PR-template variants, unchanged other community defaults and issue forms, shared Markdown lint, and the full-range diff; complete the current-head Copilot inline and summary review.
- Record genuine readiness or explicit source/check/review blockers, retain draft state when blocked, and hand off the exact removed paths to the separate CI owner/coordinator.

Defined 18 offline contract assertions before implementation. The existing fallback and README fail 12, including exact producer correspondence, complete adoption prompts, source pins, resolver guidance, and no-action inheritance documentation. Shared Markdown lint checks both baseline files and reports zero issues. The remaining implementation steps are unchanged.
MariusStorhaug commentedon Oct 31, 2026
Committed the exact complete producer scaffold and hidden authoring contract as 746e868. All 18 local assertions pass after the template and direct README edits; Markdown lint and diff checks pass. The README change is not yet committed, and PR readiness remains separate from this completed implementation step.
MariusStorhaug commentedon Oct 31, 2026
Recorded the actual canonical-source prerequisite through the native blocked-by relationship to MSXOrg/docs#226, after verifying its Task type and open state. The closed MSXOrg/docs#202 and repository-only governance Task MSXOrg/docs#166 are not prerequisites for this delivery. The immutable candidate can be checked now, but the PR remains draft while its actual source prerequisite is unlanded.
MariusStorhaug commentedon Oct 31, 2026
Committed the direct README adoption note as 9101c8b and pushed both ordinary commits to the existing PR branch. The note preserves local-template precedence, states that inheritance needs no configuration/code/invocation edits, and does not promise to rewrite open descriptions. No pipeline, release implementation, marketplace, or governance setting was added.

Reconciled the existing PR description with complete consumer instructions, exact candidate and fallback identities, and actual non-release applicability. The only closing reference is this Task; the source dependency is native, and the captured no-existing-CI finding remains non-closing context. The PR remains draft while source and required readiness gates are incomplete.

Completed the scoped verification and recorded its blockers. All 18 offline assertions pass after a 12-failure baseline; exact immutable-source correspondence, the three source headings/links, two-file Markdown lint, the reconciled PR-body lint, and the full-range diff check pass. The explicit Copilot round exits 0 at 9101c8b with no inline issues or unresolved threads. Its full summary still requires independent verification of the unmerged source prerequisite and missing hosted validation. The Task stays open and natively blocked by MSXOrg/docs#226; PR readiness remains draft, with the separate no-existing-CI finding recorded in #11.

Final live-head verification detected the material producer revision 3d388e283c2e20d88d112b2951c4df857e955821. Its scaffold adds closing delivery-leaf plan progress and convergence-sweep prompts to all five results, and its owning contract clarifies actual producer signal compatibility and internal-only evidence. Updated the current source pins and added test-first refresh/revalidation steps without discarding the completed work or changing the delivery scope.
MariusStorhaug commentedon Oct 31, 2026
Extended the offline harness to 21 assertions before changing the refreshed contract. The previously aligned fallback fails five at the new producer revision: complete body correspondence, all five delivery-plan/convergence prompts, new source pins, actual producer signal compatibility, and internal-only adoption/evidence scope. This confirms the refresh regression checks detect the material changes.
MariusStorhaug commentedon Oct 31, 2026
Committed and pushed the coherent producer refresh as 342381e. The complete fallback body now matches candidate 3d388e283c2e20d88d112b2951c4df857e955821; all 21 assertions and two-file shared Markdown lint pass. The actual-producer mapping guard and internal-only adoption/evidence guidance are explicit, all five result groups carry plan/convergence prompts, and the three handoff anchors remain valid. Current-head hosted review and final PR evidence are the remaining scoped refresh step.

The refreshed verification is complete at 342381e, matching producer candidate 3d388e283c2e20d88d112b2951c4df857e955821. All 21 assertions, exact immutable-source correspondence, three handoff anchors, two-file Markdown lint, PR-body lint, and the full-range diff check pass. The explicit refreshed Copilot round exits 0 and has no inline issues or unresolved threads. Its full summary still flags unmerged MSXOrg/docs#209, open MSXOrg/docs#226, and absent hosted validation tracked in #11. All scoped implementation-plan steps are complete, but the Task stays open/natively blocked and the PR stays draft; no source, validation, independent-review, or governance gate is bypassed.
[-]Align the organization pull request fallback with the approved release contract[/-][+]Remove organization PR templates in favor of canonical guidance[/+]MariusStorhaug commentedon Oct 31, 2026
User-directed reversal: remove central defaults too and use canonical PR-format guidance only. Replaced the current Task contract and plan with the no-template deliverable while preserving the earlier implementation commits/comments as history. The clean candidate has one actual PR-template file; no root/docs or multiple-template variant exists. A failing no-template baseline is recorded before removal. Canonical docs and #12 validator/workflow/test changes remain separately owned.
MariusStorhaug commentedon Oct 31, 2026
Committed and pushed the user-directed removal as 81d4ace. The sole removed file is .github/pull_request_template.md; no root/docs or multiple-template variant remains. Only the directly coupled README and CONTRIBUTING authoring links change, and the complete diff leaves other defaults, issue forms, client routes, media, and CI-owner paths unchanged. Shared Markdown lint passes for both changed documents; the canonical no-file source handoff and current-head review are still pending.
MariusStorhaug commentedon Oct 31, 2026
Verified the exact no-template candidate 81d4ace: 29 tracked files, zero tracked/on-disk GitHub PR-template variants, and only the template deletion plus README/CONTRIBUTING links in the full net diff. Markdown lint passes for both guides and the finalized PR body; diff checks and the canonical entry-point URL pass. The fresh Copilot round exits 0 with no inline comments or unresolved threads. Its full summary still requires the pending #209/#226 no-template source handoff and #12 validator compatibility, so those concerns and draft state remain open. The expanded scoped issue sweep finds no additional fully delivered issue, including the separate validation/pre-commit/feature-intake work.
MariusStorhaug commentedon Oct 31, 2026
Handed off the verified removal and exact candidate to the coordinator and separate CI owner, and presented the current draft PR attachment. The sole remaining scoped plan item is exact canonical no-file-source reconciliation; source #226/#209, validator compatibility, and required hosted/enforcement readiness remain open. The Task and PR remain open/draft; this report does not claim the producer source work or full delivery is complete.

Independently verified the final no-file source at bc03a5992615f65d1d5346dc48e7506e80b8b6ca. Its untruncated source tree has 298 entries and no GitHub PR-template files; Repository Standard owns file policy, while PR Format owns the actual record and release-range-first analysis. The source PR is ready with exact-head documentation checks and approval, but is not merged and Task #226 remains open. Refreshed against accepted main #9 without rewriting earlier commits; preserved its README media paragraph and all accepted assets/attributes. Added direct file-policy and actual-record-example pointers only in the two coupled guides, after a failing pointer baseline.
MariusStorhaug commentedon Oct 31, 2026
Exact no-file source correspondence is now reconciled with bc03a5992615f65d1d5346dc48e7506e80b8b6ca in the Task and PR record. Current removal head is 990bfcb against accepted main 0c67251. Repository Standard owns file policy; PR Format owns the actual-record example and release-range-first analysis. All 42 tracked files remain free of PR-template variants, both policy pointers and the complete-record example pointer pass their checks, and coupled Markdown lint passes. A new current-head review is being requested; source #226/#209 still has not landed and separate #12 compatibility/enforcement is not assumed.
MariusStorhaug commentedon Oct 31, 2026
Final scoped verification is complete at 990bfcb against base 0c67251, with exact canonical authority bc03a5992615f65d1d5346dc48e7506e80b8b6ca. All 42 tracked files have zero PR-template variants; only the sole template deletion and two coupled guides differ from accepted main. Policy/example checks, guide and actual-record Markdown lint, preserved-default/media checks, and the current-base diff check pass. The fresh Copilot round exits 0 with no inline comments or unresolved threads; its full summary still requires source publication and validator compatibility confirmation. The separate #12 owner reverified this exact source pair with its literal/no-inline shared-rule checker and reports local compatibility only, not hosted #8 CI or record-quality approval. The source #226/#209 and code-validation #12 remain unmerged, and no required-check enforcement approval is inferred. All scoped author-side plan steps are complete; Task #10 remains open and PR #8 remains draft for those real gates.
