feat(sync): TanStack DB 1.0 and an opt-in local cache that resumes sources - #353
TanStack DB 0.11.3 → 1.0.0-rc.1.transaction.isPersisted.promise is now transaction.when("settled"), the $synced row field is now $hasPendingWrites, and watchStall also reports the new crashed status.
Opt-in local cache (localStorage["hazel:local-cache"] = "on", then reload). It's off by default: with the flag off, every collection behaves as before.
Storage: every eager (org and user source) collection is wrapped in persistedCollectionOptions from @tanstack/browser-db-sqlite-persistence, which runs wa-sqlite on OPFS with one file per user (core/db/local-cache.ts).
Restore: the mirror stores each row's sources as row metadata, restores them when the collection starts, and marks the collection ready from the cache. A source's snapshot replaces its stored rows, and stored rows from an org the user has left are dropped.
Resume: each collection stores seq:<source>, written after the rows. Before a source opens, the hub asks every sink for its resume point and sends Hello{since} with the lowest. Any sink without one, or a collection that keeps nothing (channel-partitioned ones), gets a snapshot as before.
Failure handling: a different user signing in on the same page reloads it, and a cache that fails to open turns the flag off and reloads.
Benchmark
BENCH=1 bunx vitest run src/cold-start.bench.test.ts in libs/effect-db-collection. It uses fake sockets, so network and server time are excluded, and node:sqlite in place of OPFS.

The win is on the wire and on the server. On the client, restoring takes about 2× as long as applying a snapshot in memory.
Caveats
Internal APIs: it relies on TanStack's sync-persistence protocol, which is marked @internal, and on collection._state.syncedData.
Bundle: +50 KB gzipped on the main bundle even with the flag off. The 524 KB gzipped wasm and the worker load only when the cache opens.
Not yet supported: on-demand collections, multiple tabs (no coordinator), and Safari/Tauri OPFS (untested).
Test plan
libs/effect-db-collection: typecheck and 49 tests, including new persisted and resume tests that use the real browser persistence over node:sqlite
apps/web-foldkit: typecheck, 1505 tests, and a production build that emits the worker and wasm
Preview: sign in, check the channel sidebar and messages with the flag off
Preview: turn the flag on, reload, and check rows appear before the socket answers and Hello.since is set

Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Added an opt-in local cache for supported browsers, allowing collection data to be restored between visits.
Sync can resume from saved progress and apply updates received since the cache was saved; when saved progress is unavailable, it requests a fresh snapshot.
Bug Fixes
Sync stalls now receive the same error-grace handling when a collection crashes as when it reports an error.
Optimistic actions now wait for transactions to settle before checking their outcome.
…urces
Upgrade @tanstack/db from 0.11.3 to 1.0.0-rc.1: `isPersisted.promise` becomes
`when("settled")`, `$synced` becomes `$hasPendingWrites`, and the stall watch
also reports the new `crashed` status.
Add an opt-in local cache (`localStorage["hazel:local-cache"] = "on"`):
every eager collection is wrapped in TanStack's SQLite persistence (wa-sqlite
on OPFS, one file per user). The mirror stores each row's sources as row
metadata and each source's seq as collection metadata, restores both when the
collection starts, and shows the stored rows at once. Before a source opens,
the hub asks every sink for its resume point and sends `Hello{since}` with the
lowest; any sink without one (or a collection that keeps nothing) gets a
snapshot as before. With the flag off nothing changes.
Benchmark (fake sockets, node:sqlite): a warm load carries 5 KB instead of
0.2-18 MB of snapshot, while the client-side restore costs about 2x applying
the snapshot in memory.

Walkthrough
The pull request adds persisted rows and sync-sequence support to collections, including connection resumption. The web app gains an opt-in browser SQLite cache. It also updates optimistic transaction settlement handling and extends live-query stall timing to crashed collections.

Handle a failed cache-flag removal.
If localStorage.removeItem throws after the database fails to open, the handler skips window.location.reload(). The pending database operations then reject, and the intended cache-off recovery does not occur. Catch the storage error and provide a recovery path that does not repeatedly reload with the flag still enabled. (github.com)
Based on learnings: “wrap localStorage/sessionStorage reads and writes in try-catch blocks.”

Stop sync startup when the bound user changes.
If bindLocalCache(userId) detects a different user, it requests a reload but returns normally. startSyncSession then activates the new user's sources while the collections still use the first user's database. This permits cross-user rows to appear or be written before navigation completes. Make the binding result prevent session startup on the reload path. (github.com)

Discard stored seqs when the restore fails.
If hydrateBaseline() or scanPersistedRows() rejects, the handler logs a warning and returns []. The .then block still adopts the stored seqs from storedSeqs.
Then resumePoint returns the stored seq for the source. The hub sends Hello{since}, and the server sends only the changes after that seq. The mirror holds none of the earlier rows, so the collection permanently lacks them. No snapshot is requested, because keptAll is true for an empty scan and heldLive is false.
Treat a failed restore as "cannot trust the stored seqs". The existing loop at Line 405 already marks unadopted stored seqs dirty, so they are deleted on the next flush.

… the local cache
A run whose rows did not all reach a persisted collection (a row the schema
cannot decode, a rejected write or commit) marks its source lossy: the
collection stops storing that source's seq, so the next load asks for a
snapshot instead of resuming past the missing rows. A clean snapshot of the
source clears it.
Cover local-cache.ts: off without the flag or OPFS, opens the bound user's
file only once bound, reloads when another user signs in, and turns itself
off and reloads when the file cannot open.

🟢 Confidence 8/10 · likely safe to merge. Held at 8 because earlier reviews of this pull request found 1 defect. no findings · tests covered · risk medium · 1 defect fixed in earlier rounds
The follow-up commit stops a persisted collection storing a resume seq over rows that never landed, and adds tests for the local cache and the persisted/resume paths. My earlier findings are fixed and I found no new defect in the changed files.
onCommit deletes a source's stored seq while markLossy holds it, so the next load asks for a snapshot
applyRows marks a decode skip lossy and a clean snapshot clears it
persisted.test.ts covers restore, departed org, resume and the lossy fallback over node:sqlite
local-cache.test.ts covers the flag-off, no-OPFS, user-change and open-failure paths
Fixed since the last review
✅ F1 · onCommit stores a seq over rows a decode skip or failed write dropped
✅ F2 · local-cache.ts resume and guard paths have no test
