Java: scope the OpenMP thread count to each build; fix builds without index parameters - #2844
CagraIndexImpl.build, buildBbq and BruteForceIndexImpl.build call omp_set_num_threads(n) before the native build and omp_set_num_threads(1) afterwards. They force 1 when no index parameters are given.
nthreads-var is per thread in OpenMP. libgomp keeps it in the calling thread's implicit task, and a thread that never set it starts from the process default. A standalone check: thread A sets 16 and keeps a team of 16 after thread B sets 1, and an untouched thread C gets the default of 24. So concurrent builds on different CuVSResources/threads do not race on this setting. The problems are these:
The finally resets the calling thread to 1 rather than to its previous value, so later OpenMP work on that thread runs single-threaded.
CagraIndex.merge() ignores numWriterThreads entirely and runs with whatever count an earlier build on the same thread left behind.
A brute-force build without parameters throws a NullPointerException from getNumWriterThreads().
(Before #2774, a CAGRA build without parameters also segfaulted the JVM by reading IVF-PQ n_lists through a NULL ivf_pq_build_params. Since #2774 the builders fill in the CagraIndexParams.Builder defaults, so that path is no longer reachable from the public API.)
How much the count matters: Elasticsearch passes 1. Same build, baseline library, 1 vs 24 threads:

Change
New OmpThreadScope. It records the calling thread's omp_get_max_threads() (newly added to headers.h), applies the requested count, and restores the previous value on close. A count of zero or less (or no params) leaves OpenMP alone, so native code uses the OpenMP default; this is now documented on CagraIndexParams.Builder.withNumWriterThreads. On main, 0 reached omp_set_num_threads(0), which libgomp clamps to 1. The scope is opened inside resources.access() so it is restored on the thread that set it. Used by the CAGRA build, the BBQ build and CagraIndex.merge().
Brute force: drop the OpenMP calls. Nothing on the brute-force build path uses OpenMP, and reading the thread count was what made params mandatory there.
The numWriterThreads defaults are unchanged (builder: 2). The Elasticsearch side is elastic/elasticsearch#161751.
Tests
New OmpThreadsIT. Three of its four tests fail on main:
with the thread count pinned to 5, it is 1 after a CAGRA build;
the same holds for a CAGRA build without params (since Add source-specific CagraIndex builders #2774 it builds with the default params instead of crashing, then resets the count to 1);
a brute-force build without params throws an NPE.
The fourth, testCagraMergeRestoresOmpThreads, passes on main too: main's merge never changes the count, and the count used during a merge can't be observed from Java. It guards the restore. Each test pins the count to 5 first, which differs from both the old reset value (1) and the requested count (3).
CagraBuildAndSearchIT, CagraMultiThreadStabilityIT, BruteForceAndSearchIT and BruteForceRandomizedIT still pass.
How this was measured
RTX PRO 6000 Blackwell Server Edition (sm_120a, 96 GB), 24 vCPU Xeon, CUDA 13.0, driver 580, JDK 25, main @ 24b0b17. The harness drives the Java API the way Elasticsearch's GPU codec (ES92GpuHnswVectorsWriter) does:
Flush:CuVSMatrix.deviceBuilder fed from heap float[].
Merge: a zero-copy host view of the mmapped vectors file.
int8 merge: rows of dims + 4 bytes (a 4-byte correction trailer per row).
Graph read-back:getGraph(), then toHost() below 128 MB or getRow() above.
CAGRA parameters are Elastic's (graph degree 12, intermediate degree 22, 11 NN-Descent iterations, cosine). Each number is the mean of 5 builds after a warm-up build, in a fresh JVM on an otherwise idle machine. Speedups carry a 95% bootstrap CI. The data is wiki_all 1M × 768 and a clustered synthetic set at 1M and 4M × 1024, the same generator as #2837.
The CAGRA, BBQ and brute-force builds called omp_set_num_threads(n) and
reset it to 1 afterwards, and forced 1 when no index parameters were
given. OpenMP's nthreads-var is per calling thread (libgomp keeps it in
the thread's implicit task), so concurrent builds on different threads
never shared the setting; the cost was the count itself. Resetting to 1
left the calling thread single-threaded for any later OpenMP work, and a
build without parameters ran its host phases on one thread.
Add OmpThreadScope, which applies the requested count and restores the
thread's previous value (omp_get_max_threads, newly bound) instead of 1,
and leaves OpenMP alone when no count is given.
Also fix two crashes on builds without index parameters:
- CAGRA read IVF-PQ n_lists through the NULL ivf_pq_build_params of the
default parameters and segfaulted the JVM;
- brute force threw a NullPointerException from getNumWriterThreads().
Drop the host sync before cuvsCagraBuild: there is no work on the
stream that the build (on the same stream) is not already ordered after.
Adds OmpThreadsIT; all three tests fail on main.

Java CAGRA builds and index merges now restore the previous OpenMP thread setting after operations that specify a thread count.
Builds without a specified thread count leave the OpenMP setting unchanged, including brute-force builds.
IVF-PQ list counts are limited to the dataset row count when the required parameters are available.
Documentation
Clarified how writer-thread settings affect native builds and merges, including that zero or negative values leave the OpenMP setting unchanged.
CAGRA builds and merges now scope OpenMP thread settings and restore the prior setting after the native operation. Brute-force builds no longer set or reset the thread count. IVF-PQ parameter handling, API documentation, and integration tests were also updated.

Summary
OpenMP scope and declaration java/panama-bindings/headers.h, java/cuvs-java/src/main/java22/com/nvidia/cuvs/internal/common/OmpThreadScope.java
The header declares omp_get_max_threads(void). OmpThreadScope applies positive thread counts and restores the saved count when closed.
CAGRA builds and merge java/cuvs-java/src/main/java22/com/nvidia/cuvs/internal/CagraIndexImpl.java, java/cuvs-java/src/main/java/com/nvidia/cuvs/CagraIndexParams.java, fern/pages/java_api/java-api-com-nvidia-cuvs-cagraindexparams.md, java/cuvs-java/src/test/java/com/nvidia/cuvs/OmpThreadsIT.java
CAGRA builds and merges use OmpThreadScope. When parameters are absent, these paths use zero as the thread count. The standard build adjusts IVF-PQ n_lists only when the algorithm and nested parameters are present. Documentation describes thread-count behavior, and integration tests check counts after CAGRA operations.
NVIDIA/cuvs#2774: Adds source-specific CAGRA builders that route builds without explicit parameters through CagraIndexImpl.

Explanation
The pull request description is specific and on-topic. It explains the problem with OpenMP thread-count handling in CagraIndexImpl.build, buildBbq and BruteForceIndexImpl.build, including the reset to 1 in the finally block, the missing thread count in CagraIndex.merge(), and the NullPointerException in the brute-force build without parameters. It also describes the change: the new OmpThreadScope class, the headers.h addition, the IVF-PQ n_lists guard, the brute-force OpenMP removal, and the documentation update. It lists the new OmpThreadsIT tests and benchmark method. These points match the raw summary of changed files.

Thanks a lot for the PR, and sorry for the delay in reviewing it. Overall I think it's a good change. Since we're fixing this in most places, it would be good to add the scope to CagraIndexImpl.merge() as well. It currently ignores numWriterThreads and implicitly relies on an earlier build on the same thread having set the count to 1.

There wasn't a good one. libgomp is always loaded wherever cuVS runs, so a failed lookup should be a failure, not a skip. It now throws (06c6125). The isLinuxSupportedArch() assumption stays, matching the other ITs.
- Scope the OpenMP thread count in CagraIndexImpl.merge() as well, using
the merge params' numWriterThreads.
- Drop OpenMP handling from the brute-force build; nothing in that path
uses OpenMP.
- Restore the stream sync before cuvsCagraBuild; it is unrelated to this
change and will be proposed separately.
- OmpThreadsIT: fail instead of skipping when omp_get_max_threads cannot
be resolved, and cover merge.
- Run pre-commit (copyright headers, spotless).

Compare against a fixed thread count (5) instead of whatever the test
thread happened to have, so a regression that resets the count to 1 or
leaves the requested count in place cannot pass. The merge test re-pins
the baseline after building its inputs so it covers merge() alone.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
CagraIndexImpl.merge() now uses the same OmpThreadScope, taking numWriterThreads from the merge params (left alone when no params are given, as for build). New OmpThreadsIT.testCagraMergeRestoresOmpThreads checks the calling thread's count is restored afterwards. To be upfront: that test passes on main too, since main's merge never touches the count; it guards the restore, while the count used during the merge isn't observable from Java.
Brute force: OpenMP handling removed entirely.
Stream sync restored exactly as on main.
The libgomp lookup no longer skips; it fails if the symbol can't be resolved.
pre-commit run (copyright headers on headers.h and OmpThreadScope.java, spotless).
Following CodeRabbit, each test now pins the count to 5 first (6a3982c), so a reset to 1 can't slip through. Tested on an RTX 5090: OmpThreadsIT passes 4/4. Run on main's Java code, the original three still fail (5 -> 1, JVM crash, NPE). I also ran the full Java IT suite on this branch and on main against the same native build, one JVM per class, and the results match.

Thanks, this looks much better now! I left a couple of minor comments. Could you also update the PR description to match the current state? Also, the CAGRA JVM crash can no longer happen now that #2774 has been merged.

I think access() should go first. I think, theoretically, we might exit access() on a different thread in which case you are going to restore it on a wrong thread.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Good catch, fixed in cd9be4e. The scope now opens inside resources.access(), the same order as build, so it closes first and restores the count on the thread that set it.

This changes what withNumWriterThreads(0) (or a negative value) means. On main it reached omp_set_num_threads(0), which libgomp clamps to 1, so the build was single-threaded. Here it skips the call, so the build uses the OpenMP default (all cores). I think it should be at least documented in CagraIndexParams.Builder.withNumWriterThreads.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Agreed, this is a behaviour change. Documented in cd9be4e on CagraIndexParams.Builder.withNumWriterThreads: zero or less leaves the OpenMP setting alone, so native code uses the OpenMP default. The regenerated fern page is in the same commit. I also called it out in the PR description, next to the old omp_set_num_threads(0) → 1 behaviour.
…mWriterThreads <= 0
Close the OpenMP thread scope before releasing the resources accessor, as
build already does, so the previous count is restored on the thread that
set it. Document that a non-positive numWriterThreads leaves the OpenMP
default in place.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The merge OMP scope now opens inside resources.access().
The numWriterThreads <= 0 semantics are documented on withNumWriterThreads.
The description now matches the current state. It drops the CAGRA no-params JVM crash, which #2774 made unreachable, and says what the no-params test now catches on main. Could you /ok to test 41fb40f when you get a chance?

Minor · Functional Correctness · Quick win
Describe the retained thread count, not an OpenMP default.
If the calling thread already has an OpenMP count of 1, withNumWriterThreads(0) keeps that count; it does not select one thread per core. State that a nonpositive value retains the calling thread’s current setting. Make the same correction in CagraIndexParams.java. As per path instructions, documentation changes must meet “Accuracy” and “Consistency” requirements.
