fix(db): preserve ordering invalidations during repair retirement - #2302
An ordered window can keep the wrong rows when an adapter unload changes source order while a finished repair retires its old acquisitions. The repair cleared that newer invalidation as it finished. This change keeps the newer debt, so the next ordered pass repairs the prefix before the window publishes.
The receiving witness starts with seven provider rows. An update moves row 1 to rank 10 and starts a repair. When the repair retires an old acquisition, the adapter unload moves the repaired prefix behind a row that the loader did not install. Before this change, the public window kept the stale order. Now the repair pays only its own ordering epoch, and the newer debt stays owed.
The main production change is one hunk in finishOrderedPrefixRepair():
A second hunk classifies a delete during retirement. The loader treated every such delete as the replaced acquisitions' own eviction. A finished repair holds every row of its prefix. So a delete of a sent row in that prefix is new source information. An example is a backend delete in an adapter unload. That delete now invalidates ordering. A row that ties with the boundary can sort before the boundary row, inside the prefix, or after it, outside. The loader keeps the settled prefix to tell them apart. A tie outside the prefix, such as one an old tie request held, keeps its eviction meaning and the repair's boundary.
The loader does not start the replacement inside retirement. The Collection and Effect graph loops run the loaders again when the unload's writes arrive, and that pass starts the replacement before anything publishes. ARCHITECTURE.md now states this case in the ordered-repair paragraph. A qualifying change that a retirement release delivers belongs to the same fence as a change during the chain. A window move that waits for the chain stays pending until the replacement settles.
The primary oracle also repairs neighboring instrument defects. Replay bookkeeping keeps a deferred graph continuation until a graph pass uses it or truncate discards it. That correction makes the exact #2296 replay pass. It establishes no production resource leak or public consequence for that report. The request-error checker requires the originating Error object, including when a release reports a separate cleanup error.
This head merges current main (9be51e037). Only these two hunks and their comments change production.
🔬 Oracle Coverage
Primary owner: packages/db/tests/query/ordered-source-loader-state-oracle.test.ts. The "Ordered acquisition" row of the coverage map records each lane, its reach and its limits.
Law: A completed repair pays only its own ordering epoch. A qualifying invalidation that a retirement release delivers requires an authoritative read after the invalidation and before replacement publication. A held replacement keeps the prior complete window and publishes nothing. A window move cannot report success until its chosen window is visible. Authority: ordered requests, continuation and recovery and Atomic window publication in the same document.
Reach: The directed controlled lane composes an invalidating release with up to four settled answers and generated command suffixes. It reaches release-invalidation in 94/90 seeded/random histories and completed-repair-release in 67/63. The second state counts only a release while a successful repair-chain answer settles. The real receiver runs a live-query Collection, a Collection with a same-turn setWindow, and an Effect. The unload moves the repaired prefix or deletes rows from it. It deletes the rows before the boundary, the boundary row, or a prefix row that ties with it. Or it evicts a sent row past the boundary. That evicted row is either row 1 or a tie outside the prefix. A tie row sorts before or after the boundary row by key, as live-query Collections order ties. Each grammar runs 600 histories. The seeded/random reach is about 200 per consumer at the unload and about 90 or more at a held answer. Fifteen random runs reached every state at least 41 times. Each minimum is 20. A same-turn window move can repair either window's prefix, so that kind uses only the move and the eviction of row 1. The broad request-authority arbitrary generates the callback at 5:1, like the other release reactions.
RED: Before the first production edit, the extended oracle failed on unchanged production at seed 20261029, paths 0:0 and 0. The receiver also showed the wrong public row. Before the delete edit, the delete histories failed on unchanged production at seed 20261029, path 2:0:0, and in the held delete replay. A probe showed the settled window [{ id: 1, rank: 10 }] instead of [{ id: 3, rank: 3 }]. Before the boundary-key edit, the boundary-row deletes failed at seed 20261029, path 10:0:0:0:0:0, and in their held replay. That key-only rule then failed the new tie delete at seed 20261029, path 3:0:0:0:0:1, before the settled-prefix edit.
GREEN: The full @tanstack/db suite passes 30,780/30,780. The Query DB suite passes 1,208 tests. The minified dist lane passes 357/357. TypeScript, ESLint, Prettier, pnpm lint:changed, pnpm lint:oracles and the run-budget check pass. Thirty runs of every random campaign in the owner passed.
Mutant: The original debt-clearing rule fails seven tests: both directed campaigns, both receiver campaigns and the three held replays. A replacement that waits one extra pass fails five tests. Replay bookkeeping that consumes the continuation fails three tests at the no-leak comparison. A grammar that never holds an answer fails the held-answer reach. A subset load that does not join the active window operation fails only the window-move comparisons. A release that invalidates only outside repair settlement passes the old reach and fails completed-repair-release (0). A loader that skips every retirement-time delete fails the delete histories at the progress relation. A loader that treats every sent-row delete as new information fails the eviction histories and the focused boundary-tie test. A loader that treats every boundary tie as eviction fails the boundary-row and tie deletes. A loader that treats every boundary tie as new information fails the tie evictions. A loader that keeps only the boundary row's key fails the tie deletes.
Limits: The real receiver uses distinct numeric ranks, ascending order, limits 1 and 2, offsets 0 and 1, one source and one consumer. It has one qualifying invalidation per unload and one window move per history. It does not fail a replacement under a move, or combine failure, truncate or disposal with the real unload. It uses no provider network. Ties run only on the Collection and Effect kinds, not under a same-turn window move. The replay-continuation lane reaches its deferred-refill state only when a synchronous answer meets a release-triggered truncate. Production cannot produce that pairing, because an eager source never calls its adapter on release. That lane calibrates continuation provenance and makes no production-reach claim. Obsolete later-page retirement (Ordered loader keeps no handle to release a failed request from before a cursor reset #2223) is separate.
Review follow-up in this head:
The controlled driver now treats the unload's writes as graph input. Its drain runs the next loader pass before it judges progress, as both graph loops do. Before this, a repair that finished inside a loader pass after joined work cleared caused an intermittent false failure.
Neither grammar pairs a release invalidation with a synchronous repair answer. That answer reads an eager source, whose releases never reach the adapter.
The random replay-continuation campaign runs 400 histories, so its rare state stays above its minimum.
The retirement progress check compares event order on one clock. Its epoch clause could not fail for either driver, so this head drops that clause.
The controlled lane can place the callback invalidation after disposal, reentry and truncate. It counts completed-repair-release only when the settling answer issues no further chain step. Broad overlap states require 20 histories each, and full-source plans require 5.
The receiver counts a start only for a whole-window prefix. It awaits Effect disposal and records a rejected window move without an unhandled rejection.
Focused oracle suites, the minified dist lane, scoped types, lint, formatting and size comparison passed.
The full workspace pnpm test command did not run locally. Repository-wide CI is a separate check.
🚀 Release Impact
This change affects published code, and I have generated a changeset.
This change is docs/CI/dev-only (no release).
Patch release for @tanstack/db. Against current main, the db package grows by 69 gzip bytes and 95 Brotli bytes. The typical app grows by 75 gzip bytes and 61 Brotli bytes. The delete classification uses about 50 gzip bytes. An order comparison alone cannot tell a prefix tie from an outside tie. A set of tie keys measured 14 gzip bytes larger than the kept prefix.
Related: #2296. Its replay-provenance correction is separate from the production repair.

Bug Fixes
Ordered query results now remain consistent when changes occur while outdated data is being retired.
Affected portions of the source are revalidated before repaired results are published, preventing stale windows after qualifying deletes or other invalidations.
Window updates waiting on a repair remain pending until any follow-up repair completes.
A release callback can invalidate ordering while a completed bounded repair
retires its old acquisitions. Preserve that newer debt so the next pass repairs
the source prefix before publishing. Also correct replay bookkeeping and enforce
exact request-error identity in the state oracle.

Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
[#2222] requires that an ordering invalidation delivered during repair retirement keeps bounded-repair debt, so the next ordered pass issues a read before the window publishes.
The production diff in packages/db/src/query/live/ordered-source-loader.ts (finishOrderedPrefixRepair(), around line 781) changes the final work move. It now passes this.debt when this.repairNeedsReplacement() is true, and none otherwise. A newer invalidation or a full-source escalation during retirement therefore survives completion. This differs from the epoch comparison proposed in the issue. The issue's expected result is still met.
The delete classification hunk (around line 234) and the settled-prefix storage (around line 1243) extend the same requirement. A finished repair holds every row of its prefix. A delete of a sent prefix row during retirement is therefore new ordering information. The issue names loadedSubsets:invalidated reports and order-changing updates as examples. A prefix delete is the same class of source change. The settled-prefix storage supports this classification. The PR description says "Only these two hunks change production." The diff shows a third production change, the settled-prefix storage. It supports the delete hunk, so it does not change this verdict.
ARCHITECTURE.md states the same fence for the ordered-repair paragraph. The oracle suites cover retirement-time invalidation with Collection, Collection-window, and Effect receivers. The PR reports RED results on unchanged production and GREEN results after the change. I did not rerun the tests. The oracle-config.ts diff could not be read in this review, so the registry entries rest on the supplied summary. The PASS rests on the production diff, the documented contract, and the reported results.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description follows the repository template closely. It has the Changes section with a clear motivation, the mechanism (the changed hunk in finishOrderedPrefixRepair and the delete classification during retirement), and the reasoning for why the graph loops handle the replacement. The Oracle Coverage section names the primary owner (ordered-source-loader-state-oracle.test.ts) and records the law, reach, RED/GREEN results, mutants, and limits, as the bug-fix guidance asks. The checklist is filled in with the local focused suites, and the release impact has a changeset checked with the release impact explained. The main gap is that the first checklist item (pnpm test) is unchecked, and the author explains that the full workspace pnpm test did not run locally. That is disclosed rather than hidden, so it does not block the check. The description is long and dense, but it is complete and on-topic.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The PR still includes changes that the PR description assigns to a separate correction for #2296. The description states that the replay-bookkeeping correction "makes the exact #2296 replay pass" and "establishes no production resource leak or public consequence for that report." It also states that the replay-provenance correction "is separate from the production repair." The PR gives no evidence that these changes are required to run or validate the #2222 witness.
The unrelated changes are:
packages/db/tests/query/ordered-source-loader-state-oracle.test.ts: the replay-continuation handoff model and its deferred-refill lane, the check that replay bookkeeping does not consume a staged continuation, and the request-error identity checks (each participant reports its own originating Error, including when a release reports a separate cleanup error).
packages/db/tests/oracle-config.ts and packages/db/tests/oracle-replay-manifest.ts: the ordered-loader.replay-continuation registry entry and the matching manifest entry.
The retirement-invalidation and retirement-receiver oracle changes, the production hunks, the ARCHITECTURE.md paragraph, and the changeset relate to #2222 and are in scope. The oracle-config.ts diff could not be read, so these entries are assessed from the supplied summary.
This result matches the previous assessment. The current description does not add evidence that links these changes to #2222.
Resolution
Move the replay-continuation handoff model and its lane, the replay-bookkeeping check, the request-error identity checks, and the ordered-loader.replay-continuation registry and manifest entries to a separate change for #2296. Keep the production hunks, the retirement-invalidation and retirement-receiver oracle changes, the ARCHITECTURE.md paragraph, and the changeset in this change. If a moved change is required to run the #2222 witness, provide direct evidence of that dependency. Name the specific test path and the failing check that needs it.

Replace a private-method spy with a retained-release observation passed to the
shared no-leak comparison. The same covering-repair history first runs with
genuine observations. Give the real-subscription arbitrary its own replay
property; preserve the original controlled property and all run/reach budgets.
Law: a completed covering repair retires earlier successful bounded leases.
Authority: live-query ARCHITECTURE, Ordered requests, continuation, and recovery.
Replay coordinates identify one arbitrary and production driver (ORC-007).
Reach: controlled release-invalidation and real-subscription-release each reach
200 histories in each fixed/random campaign, in source and minified dist.
RED: original private-name calibration fails at setup in minified dist; this is
not semantic RED. Original guarded replay emits two executions under the same
key and fails the independent exact-one guard.
GREEN: source owner 50/50; complete minified dist 347/347; both property replays
execute exactly one matching completed history in source and dist. Scoped tsc,
ESLint, Prettier, changed lint, minified public API and four registry checks pass.
Mutant: replace real finite retirement method body with a no-op, rebuild
minified dist, and both source/dist genuine histories reject no leak: requests
[0,1] held after authoritative request2. Restore exact production and rebuild.
Limits: test-only repair; no product behavior, model semantics, input domains,
public observation cuts, replay-continuation policy or budget changes. Existing
receiver limits remain. Full workspace test suite not run locally.

Extend the ordered-source-loader state owner so a retirement-time ordering
invalidation is checked through both real consumers (live-query Collection
and Effect), including a held replacement answer that must retain the prior
window and publish nothing until it settles. The progress relation now
requires a start in the newer ordering epoch, after the invalidation and
before public replacement. The broad request-authority arbitrary generates
releaseInvalidates, so the callback composes with release faults, truncate,
disposal, offsets, retry timers, full-source plans and later chains.
Collection and Effect held-answer reach are declared separately.
No production change.

…d's pass
Review follow-up for the ordered-source-loader state owner:
- An invalidating adapter unload writes graph input, so the driver's drain
runs the consumer's next loader pass before judging progress, as the
live-query Collection and Effect graph loops do. Without it, a repair that
finished inside a loader pass after joined work cleared was misjudged as
owing no read (an intermittent false failure in random campaigns).
- An eager source never reaches its adapter on release, so neither grammar
pairs a synchronous repair answer with a release invalidation.
- Declare `completed-repair-release` reach: an invalidating release observed
while a successful repair-chain answer settles. A settle prefix makes the
chain complete first.
- Weight `releaseInvalidates` 5:1 like the other release reactions, so the
quiet report laws keep their reach.
- Add a `collection-window` receiver kind: a window move in the same turn as
the ordering write stays pending behind a held replacement and settles
with its chosen window visible (Atomic window publication).
- Run the random replay-continuation campaign at 400 histories and record
that its deferred-refill state needs an eager/release pairing production
cannot produce.
- Update the coverage map's scope, reach and limits; drop stale run counts.
No production change.

…heck
- ARCHITECTURE.md: a qualifying change that a retirement release delivers
after the chain succeeds belongs to the same fence; the next ordered pass
starts its replacement before the barrier releases, and a waiting window
move stays pending until it settles.
- Loader comment: retirement can also raise the debt to a full-source read.
- The retirement progress relation judges event order on one clock. Its
epoch clause could not fail for either driver, so it and its old-epoch
calibration are removed.

…as new source information
During repair retirement the loader skipped every delete as the replaced
acquisitions' own eviction. A delete of a sent row before the finished
repair's boundary cannot be eviction, because the repair holds every such
row: it is new source information, such as an adapter unload that writes a
backend delete, and it now invalidates ordering. Deletes at or past the
boundary, including a tie only an old tie request held, keep their eviction
meaning and the repair's boundary.
The real receiver oracle now crosses moving, deleting before the boundary,
and evicting past the boundary inside the unload (300 histories per
campaign, held answers weighted 2:1). The controlled lane can place the
callback invalidation after disposal, reentry and truncate, records
completed-repair reach only when the settling answer issues no further
chain step, counts a receiver start only for a whole-window prefix, awaits
Effect disposal, and records a rejected window move instead of rethrowing.
Broad overlap reach requires 20 histories (5 for full-source plans).
Co-authored-by: Isaac <no-reply@databricks.com>
…urce information
The loader now keeps the key of its settled source boundary row. During
repair retirement, a delete of a sent row before the boundary, or of the
boundary row itself, invalidates ordering. Another row that only ties with
the boundary, such as one an old tie request held, stays eviction and keeps
the repair's boundary.
The real receiver oracle adds a boundary-row delete unload beside moving,
deleting before the boundary and evicting past it. Mutants that skip every
retirement delete, invalidate every sent-row delete, evict every boundary
tie, or invalidate every boundary tie each fail.
Co-authored-by: Isaac <no-reply@databricks.com>
…prefix
A row that ties with the repair's boundary can sort before the boundary row,
inside the prefix the repair holds, or after it, outside. The loader now
keeps the settled prefix and treats a retirement-time delete of a boundary
tie as new source information only when that row is in the prefix. The
earlier boundary-key rule treated a tie before the boundary row as
eviction, which the new tie dimension found.
The real receiver oracle now places a tie before or after the boundary row,
ordering ties by key as live-query Collections do, and derives the repair's
prefix from that order. It adds a delete of the prefix tie and an eviction of
the outside tie, so the boundary-tie law is generated rather than pinned. A
same-turn window move can repair either window's prefix, so that kind keeps
only the prefix-free unloads. Each receiver campaign runs 400 histories.
Mutants that skip every retirement delete, invalidate every sent-row delete,
evict every boundary tie, invalidate every boundary tie, or keep only the
boundary row's key each fail the generated campaigns.

The last three heads changed production: retirement-time deletes inside the repaired prefix, including boundary-row and prefix-tie deletes, now invalidate ordering. Please review the current head 2b204c3.

The random receiver campaign missed its boundary-tie reach minimum in CI
(16 of 20). Draw the boundary-row delete twice as often and run each receiver
campaign at 600 histories. Fifteen random runs reached every state at least
41 times.

🎯 Changes
The main production change is one hunk in
finishOrderedPrefixRepair():A second hunk classifies a delete during retirement.

Primary owner:
packages/db/tests/query/ordered-source-loader-state-oracle.test.ts. The "Ordered acquisition" row of the coverage map records each lane, its reach and its limits.release-invalidationin 94/90 seeded/random histories andcompleted-repair-releasein 67/63. The second state counts only a release while a successful repair-chain answer settles. The real receiver runs a live-query Collection, a Collection with a same-turnsetWindow, and an Effect. The broad request-authority arbitrary generates the callback at 5:1, like the other release reactions.20261029, paths0:0and0. The receiver also showed the wrong public row. Before the delete edit, the delete histories failed on unchanged production at seed20261029, path2:0:0, and in the held delete replay. A probe showed the settled window[{ id: 1, rank: 10 }]instead of[{ id: 3, rank: 3 }]. Before the boundary-key edit, the boundary-row deletes failed at seed20261029, path10:0:0:0:0:0, and in their held replay. That key-only rule then failed the new tie delete at seed20261029, path3:0:0:0:0:1, before the settled-prefix edit.@tanstack/dbsuite passes 30,780/30,780. The Query DB suite passes 1,208 tests. The minified dist lane passes 357/357. TypeScript, ESLint, Prettier, pnpm lint:changed, pnpm lint:oraclesand the run-budget check pass. Thirty runs of every random campaign in the owner passed.completed-repair-release(0). A loader that keeps only the boundary row's key fails the tie deletes.deferred-refillstate only when a synchronous answer meets a release-triggered truncate. Production cannot produce that pairing, because an eager source never calls its adapter on release. That lane calibrates continuation provenance and makes no production-reach claim. Obsolete later-page retirement (Ordered loader keeps no handle to release a failed request from before a cursor reset #2223) is separate.Review follow-up in this head:

Patch release for
@tanstack/db. Against currentmain, thedbpackage grows by 69 gzip bytes and 95 Brotli bytes. The typical app grows by 75 gzip bytes and 61 Brotli bytes. The delete classification uses about 50 gzip bytes. An order comparison alone cannot tell a prefix tie from an outside tie. A set of tie keys measured 14 gzip bytes larger than the kept prefix.Closes #2222.
Related: #2296. Its replay-provenance correction is separate from the production repair.
