Wire the request-level CompletePromptOptions (abortSignal/timeoutMs) and the Task-level metadata.abortSignal through the anthropic-family providers and xAI/MiniMax, so user-initiated cancellation and timeouts reach the underlying SDK calls.

Providers / paths touched

  • src/api/providers/anthropic.ts — completePrompt forwards options?.abortSignal / options?.timeoutMs as SDK request options; createMessage bridges metadata?.abortSignal into a per-request AbortController (pre-aborted guard + { once: true } listener, Bedrock pattern) and passes the internal signal to client.messages.create (both the prompt-caching and default branches). Existing client-level timeout untouched.
  • src/api/providers/anthropic-vertex.ts — same for AnthropicVertexHandler: completePrompt options forwarding; createMessage bridging merged into the existing anthropic-beta request-options object.
  • src/api/providers/xai.ts — completePrompt forwards signal/timeout to client.responses.create; createMessage bridging; cancellations are normalized to the contract AbortError (isRequestAborted + createAbortError) in both call paths so callers can detect error.name === "AbortError" (otherwise they would be wrapped by handleOpenAIError).
  • src/api/providers/minimax.ts — completePrompt options forwarding; createMessage bridging.

Tests added

  • Ported the reference-implementation completePrompt tests for all four providers: abort-signal passthrough (same signal instance), timeout passthrough, signal+timeout merge, timeoutMs: 0 defined-check, and backward-compatibility (no options → undefined second argument).
  • New createMessage bridging tests per provider: pre-aborted metadata.abortSignal → request rejects with name === "AbortError"; external abort mid-flight → the SDK request's signal aborts and the stream rejects with AbortError. Uses makeCreateMessageMetadata from src/test-utils/api.ts.
  • Updated existing single-argument toHaveBeenCalledWith assertions in xai.spec.ts / minimax.spec.ts / anthropic*.spec.ts for the new two-argument SDK calls (explicit undefined second arg where no request options are sent).

Verification in worktree: full vitest runs for all four specs (173/173 passing), per-file eslint --prune-suppressions --max-warnings=0 (exit 0, suppression counts unchanged), and tsc --noEmit (clean).

Part of the abort-signal series (round 1). Builds on #674, #901, #1008. Addresses #404.

Updated this round (2026-10-13)

Merged current upstream main into the branch to clear the dirty state. Two conflicts, both resolved by keeping both sides' intent:

  • anthropic-vertex.ts: main added reasoningTokens (output_tokens_details.thinking_tokens) to the message_start/message_delta usage yields; this branch re-indented the same switch inside its abort-bridging try block. Kept main's reasoningTokens content at the branch's indentation; the bridging changes are untouched.
  • anthropic.spec.ts: both sides added an import (branch: the makeCreateMessageMetadata test util; main: the ApiStreamChunk type). Kept both.

Verification at this head: 236/236 green across the five touched specs (anthropic, anthropic-vertex, minimax, xai, stream-cleanup); tsc --noEmit → 0 errors; per-file ESLint (--max-warnings=0) clean; prettier --check clean on touched files.

Updated this round (2026-10-13, review follow-up)

Addressed the review threads:

  • Extracted the four copies of the external-abort bridge (anthropic, anthropic-vertex, minimax, xai) into bridgeExternalAbortSignal in utils/abort-signal.ts — one canonical comment, unit-tested including a negative control that dispose() detaches the exact retained callback.
  • xAI: both createMessage and completePrompt now normalize cancellations through isRequestAborted + createAbortError; the raw OpenAI SDK abort (name Error, message "Request was aborted.") no longer escapes to callers' AbortError guards. Specs pin the normalized shape.
  • anthropic-vertex: anthropic-beta is betas.join(",") again so a second beta added to the builder later is not silently dropped.
  • Scope move (per review): the xAI mapToolChoice mapping, the typed request body, the unconditional max_output_tokens/temperature, and the vertex content_block_stop removal left this branch and are back up as their own PR (refactor(providers): map xAI tool_choice to the Responses API shape with a typed request body #2036); this unit is abort-wiring only again.
  • Cleanup coverage: vertex and xai specs now pin listener detach on the create-rejects and consumer-early-return paths (vertex uses an inline finally, so the shared stream-cleanup coverage does not reach it).

Verification at this head: 273/273 green across the six touched specs; tsc --noEmit → 0 errors; per-file ESLint (--max-warnings=0) clean; prettier --check clean on touched files.

Stryker directive removal (equivalence notes)

The one // Stryker disable next-line ObjectLiteral,BooleanLiteral in utils/abort-signal.ts was removed (directive comments are banned in touched files). Equivalence: on signal.addEventListener("abort", onAbort, { once: true }), the ObjectLiteral mutant ({}) and the BooleanLiteral mutant (once: false) are unobservable - an AbortSignal fires its abort event exactly once per signal, so the once flag can never change listener invocation count, and the listener is additionally removed explicitly in the callers' finally blocks. No test can distinguish the mutants; maintainers may exclude or accept the advisory.

Timeout guard hardening (helper port)

Port of the #1300 CodeRabbit finding to the shared mergeAbortSignalAndTimeout helper: non-finite timeoutMs (Infinity) now means "no timeout" instead of throwing ERR_OUT_OF_RANGE from AbortSignal.timeout, and finite delays are capped at 2^31-1 ms (Node clamps larger delays to 1ms, which aborted requests almost immediately). Regression tests added; negative controls fail exactly the two new tests. Identical helper fix lands in every unit of the abort series (merge-order aware); canonical copy in #1293.

Fractional-timeout rounding wave

Follow-up CR round: Node validates AbortSignal.timeout delays as uint32, so finite fractions (1500.5, 0.5) threw ERR_OUT_OF_RANGE like Infinity did. mergeAbortSignalAndTimeout now rounds delays up (a positive fraction never becomes 0 ms) before capping at 2^31-1 ms; regression test mergeAbortSignalAndTimeout(undefined, 1.5). Identical helper patch in every unit of the series (merge-order aware, canonical in #1293).

Assertion strengthening (rounding wave follow-up)

The fractional-timeout test now spies AbortSignal.timeout and pins the received delay (2 for 1.5, 1 for 0.5, never 0) instead of only asserting no-throw plus eventual abort; a round-down mutation (Math.ceil -> Math.floor) fails exactly this test. Identical patch in every unit of the series (canonical in #1293).

296-310: LGTM!

The test spies on AbortSignal.timeout and asserts the rounded delays: 2 for 1.5 ms and 1 for 0.5 ms. These assertions match the Math.min(Math.max(1, Math.ceil(timeoutMs)), 2_147_483_647) logic in mergeAbortSignalAndTimeout. The finally block restores the spy, so the earlier review comment about the 0.5 ms boundary is addressed.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Streaming requests to Anthropic, Anthropic Vertex, MiniMax, and xAI can be cancelled using abort signals. Prompt-completion requests also support abort signals and configurable timeouts, including a timeout of zero.
  • Bug Fixes
    • xAI cancellation errors are consistently reported as abort errors.
    • Anthropic Vertex responses with omitted output-token usage report zero output tokens.
    • Abort listeners are cleaned up when streaming completes, fails, or stops early.
    • Non-positive and non-finite timeout values are disabled, fractional timeouts are rounded up, and excessively large timeouts are capped safely.

Provider handlers now forward abort signals and timeout values to SDK requests. Streaming handlers remove abort listeners after completion, failure, or early consumer return. Tests cover request options, abort handling, cleanup, xAI request parameters, and Anthropic Vertex usage-token defaults.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to ac0e1

Cancellation now reaches more model requests, and xAI tool choices are translated without adding tool definitions. No new security exposure was established. One lifecycle question remains: whether closing a stream early also stops work at the provider.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The changed cancellation behavior applies to requests using the four affected adapters and their external model SDKs. The inspected controllers are request-local rather than shared across concurrent requests.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • inferred — Caller metadata controls cancellation and tool selection at the provider boundary. The inspected xAI translation changes selection format, not the set of submitted callable tool definitions; upstream authorization and downstream execution were not established by this scope.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — xAI propagates native and SDK abort errors without applying its ordinary provider-error wrapper, preserving a distinction for callers that recognize those error forms.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Verify with the SDK contract or an integration test whether early consumer return cancels the underlying provider request; if it does not, explicitly terminate that request on early exit.

Full details: Regression Evidence

Explanation

Anthropic Vertex changed createMessage to wrap SDK creation and for await iteration in a try/finally that removes the external abort listener (src/api/providers/anthropic-vertex.ts:137-249). The Vertex tests cover normal completion, request-creation failure, and early consumer return (src/api/providers/__tests__/anthropic-vertex.spec.ts:814-908), but they do not cover a stream that yields and then throws while asserting error propagation and listener removal. The generic withFinallyCleanup test does not exercise the inline Vertex path.

Resolution

Add a focused Anthropic Vertex test with an external abort signal and an async iterable that yields one chunk, then throws during iteration. Assert that the stream error propagates and that removeEventListener("abort", retainedListener) is called once. Keep the existing completion, request-creation failure, and early-return tests.

Full details: Lifecycle Resource Cleanup

Explanation

The previous lifecycle leak remains. MiniMaxHandler.createMessage registers the bridge listener at minimax.ts:95-97, then performs synchronous preprocessing before the cleanup try at minimax.ts:128. convertOpenAIToolsToAnthropic can throw for a runtime tool with a non-function type (converters.ts:28-32), so removeExternalAbortListener at minimax.ts:133 is never called. A pending external signal then retains the per-request abort callback and controller. Vertex has the same placement gap: the bridge at anthropic-vertex.ts:95-97 precedes addCacheBreakpoints at line 121, while cleanup starts at line 137.

Resolution

Create the abort bridge after all synchronous preprocessing, or wrap all code after bridge creation in a try/finally that always calls the disposer. Add regression tests for MiniMax unsupported-tool preprocessing and Vertex cache-breakpoint preprocessing failures, and assert that the external signal's retained listener is removed.

Type the Responses API request.

requestBody is Record<string, any>, and as any bypasses the SDK’s streaming request validation. Use the SDK’s typed streaming request and its inferred stream return type instead of casting both values.

- completePrompt: forward CompletePromptOptions abortSignal/timeoutMs into the SDK request for AnthropicHandler, AnthropicVertexHandler, XAIHandler, and MiniMaxHandler (request options built only when a signal/timeout is provided, preserving existing behavior)

- createMessage: bridge metadata?.abortSignal into a per-request AbortController using the Bedrock pattern (pre-aborted guard + { once: true } listener) and pass the internal signal as the SDK request signal; existing client-level timeout mechanisms are untouched

- xai: rethrow AbortError unmodified from createMessage/completePrompt so callers can detect error.name === 'AbortError'

- tests: port reference completePrompt signal/timeout propagation tests and add per-provider createMessage bridging tests (pre-aborted signal rejects with AbortError; mid-flight external abort cancels the request)
- anthropic.ts: use options?.timeoutMs !== undefined (was truthy) so a caller-supplied timeoutMs: 0 is forwarded to the SDK instead of silently dropped; all 4 family providers now share the same defined-check

- xai.ts: rethrow the OpenAI SDK's APIUserAbortError (exported from openai v5) unmodified from createMessage/completePrompt alongside native AbortError, since the SDK throws it when the request signal aborts and it would otherwise be mangled by handleOpenAIError

- tests: anthropic.spec.ts regression test asserting timeoutMs: 0 reaches the SDK as timeout: 0; xai.spec.ts exposes the real APIUserAbortError in the openai mock and asserts the SDK abort error surfaces as the same instance (unwrapped) through both createMessage and completePrompt

Series follow-up flag: adopt RequestConfigBuilder for abort/timeout option construction

This PR currently builds its abort/timeout request options directly with mergeAbortSignalAndTimeout(...) from src/api/providers/utils/abort-signal.ts. That is behaviorally identical to the RequestConfigBuilder path (src/api/providers/config-builder/request-config-builder.ts, introduced in #1008) - the builder wraps the same utility. The series plan is to make the builder the canonical call site for SDK request-option construction (typed TOptions variants per SDK), so this PR is flagged for that update.

Status: migration in the post-merge adoption PR. The refactor is mechanical (call-site substitution through the builder with a typed TOptions variant) and is deliberately kept out of this PR to preserve its already-green CI and review state.
Abort semantics (pre-abort fail-fast, mid-flight bridging, the timeoutMs > 0 guard, and normalization to AbortError) are pinned by this PR's regression tests and are preserved by the refactor.

Part of the abort-signal series addressing #404 (builds on #674, #901, #1008). anthropic-family abort wiring (anthropic, anthropic-vertex, xai, minimax).

Final verified 2026-08-20: all CI checks green on this head (0 pending / 0 failed), CodeRabbit review clean, and zero new bot findings after this commit.

  • Final head: af279dd62 (rebased onto main 252c69b52)
  • Work in this round: abort bridging across all four providers (request-local controllers, named listener cleanup in finally, catch normalization to AbortError); CodeRabbit minor fixed — the xai streaming body is now typed as OpenAI.Responses.ResponseCreateParamsStreaming (as any removed; no-explicit-any suppression count reduced 7→3).
  • Config builder: migration of the call sites to RequestConfigBuilder is scheduled for the post-merge adoption PR (see the config-builder status comment on this PR).
  • Changed-line coverage: 66/67 executable changed lines covered. The single uncovered line (anthropic.ts:215) is a structurally unreachable default: branch — the inner model switch's 18 labels are identical to the outer switch's, and the IIFE only executes inside an outer case block, so no test can execute it. The branch is retained as graceful degradation (it keeps the abort signal if a new model is ever added to only one of the two switches); the dedup cleanup is scheduled for the post-merge adoption PR.

Current step: Awaiting fresh human maintainer or CODEOWNER approval.

Automated review is complete for the latest commit but does not replace human approval.

Review-state labels are managed by this workflow; do not edit them manually. community-approved is managed the same way — do not add or remove it manually. It signals a fresh community code approval for the current head as an advisory priority only; maintainer review is still required.

Conflict resolution and post-merge repair for upstream Zoo-Code-Org#2038
(unused-variable linting re-enabled + dead code removal):
- anthropic.ts: keep the branch's withFinallyCleanup import; adopt
upstream's removal of the unused OpenAI import.
- minimax.spec.ts / xai.spec.ts: keep the branch's test-util and
APIUserAbortError imports (used by the abort tests); drop the
unused Anthropic type import from xai.spec.ts.
- anthropic.ts / anthropic-vertex.ts / minimax.ts / xai.ts: restore
the options parameter name in completePrompt (upstream renamed it
to _options where their body ignored it; this branch's abort
  wiring consumes it).
- minimax.ts: restore the AnthropicStream import (used by the typed
  stream annotation).
- anthropic-vertex.spec.ts: drop two unused mockCreate bindings
  (the spies remain).

Verification at this merge: 273/273 green across anthropic,
anthropic-vertex, minimax, xai, stream-cleanup and abort-signal
specs; tsc --noEmit 0 errors; eslint --max-warnings=0 clean with
suppression counts identical to upstream; prettier clean.

Per repo policy (AGENTS.md: Stryker suppression comments are banned;
the mutation gate rejects them in touched files). Equivalence
arguments for the resulting mutants are recorded in the PR body.
CodeRabbit: an abort landing after responses.create resolved escaped
as the OpenAI SDK's APIUserAbortError (name "Error") from the yield*
over processResponsesApiStream, outside the create catch, so callers
classified the cancellation as a provider failure. Wrap the stream
iteration and normalize through isRequestAborted/createAbortError to
the series contract (name AbortError, "The xAI request was aborted").

Regression test pins the path; negative control: reverting the wrap
fails exactly that test (1 red / 37 green).

…meout delays

Port of the Zoo-Code-Org#1300 timeout guard finding (CodeRabbit): Node's
AbortSignal.timeout throws ERR_OUT_OF_RANGE for non-integer delays
(Infinity) and clamps delays above 2^31-1 ms to 1 ms, so a
non-finite timeoutMs threw a RangeError instead of running the
request, and an overflowing one aborted almost immediately. The
helper now treats non-finite values as "no timeout" and caps
finite delays at 2^31-1 ms.

Regression tests added; negative controls (reverting the guard)
fail exactly the two new tests.

CodeRabbit follow-up on the timeout guard: Node validates
AbortSignal.timeout delays as uint32, so finite fractions (1500.5,
0.5) threw ERR_OUT_OF_RANGE just like Infinity did. The helper now
rounds delays up (a positive fraction never becomes 0 ms) before
capping at 2^31-1 ms. Regression test mergeAbortSignalAndTimeout
(undefined, 1.5); negative control (reverting the rounding) fails
exactly that test.

CodeRabbit: the fractional-timeout test only proved the call did
not throw and eventually aborted - a round-down mutation (1.5 -> 1)
would still pass. The test now spies AbortSignal.timeout and pins
the received delay: 2 for 1.5 and 1 for 0.5 (never 0). Negative
control: mutating Math.ceil to Math.floor fails exactly this test.
