Adds abort-signal support to the native Ollama provider: completePrompt now honors CompletePromptOptions.abortSignal / timeoutMs (a pre-aborted signal rejects immediately with an AbortError; mid-flight aborts and timeouts abort the per-request client), and createMessage bridges metadata.abortSignal into the per-request client's abort(). Also ports the per-request _createOllamaClient() refactor (constructor headers option for the API key) that replaces the ensureClient() singleton.

Providers / paths touched:

  • src/api/providers/native-ollama.ts — completePrompt abort/timeout wiring (per-request client, pre-aborted AbortError, abort-listener + timeout cleanup in finally); createMessage external-signal bridging into the per-request client; ensureClient() singleton replaced by per-request _createOllamaClient() using the constructor headers option for ollamaApiKey.
  • src/api/providers/__tests__/native-ollama.spec.ts — reference abort/timeout completePrompt suite and per-request-client suite ported; new createMessage bridging tests.
  • src/eslint-suppressions.json — one-line prune: native-ollama.ts @typescript-eslint/no-explicit-any 3 -> 2 (removing the ensureClient() try/catch dropped one pre-existing violation; the pre-commit lint gate requires the ratchet to match the actual count).

Tests added:

  • completePrompt: request-local client when abortSignal is provided; no signal-related options when not provided; backward compatible without options; timeoutMs reached triggers client.abort(); mid-flight abort rejects with "This operation was aborted" (name === "AbortError") and invokes the instance abort; pre-aborted signal aborts immediately and rejects with AbortError; non-positive timeoutMs creates no request-local timer; abort listener removed and timeout cleared when the signal fires; timeout cleared in finally on success.
  • createMessage abort signal: pre-aborted external signal -> stream rejects with name === "AbortError"; mid-flight external abort -> per-request client abort() is invoked and the in-flight stream rejects with name === "AbortError".
  • Per-request client creation: a fresh Ollama client per completePrompt call; API key passed through the constructor headers option; no headers when no API key is configured; custom baseUrl honored.

Part of the abort-signal series (round 1). Builds on #674, #901, #1008. Addresses #404.

Updated this round (2026-10-13)

Merged current upstream main into the branch to clear the dirty state. One conflict, in native-ollama.ts: main added the model-cache interface (getModelCacheScope + fetchModels and the GetModelsOptions/ModelCacheScope/ModelRecord imports) around the legacy ensureClient helper; this branch replaced ensureClient with a per-request _createOllamaClient(requestSignal) for abort bridging. Kept main's model-cache methods and imports (fetchModels' getOllamaModels call matches the branch's fetcher signature, including the optional signal) and the branch's per-request client in place of ensureClient.

Verification at this head: 119/119 green across native-ollama.spec.ts and fetchers/ollama.test.ts; tsc --noEmit → 0 errors; per-file ESLint (--max-warnings=0) clean; prettier --check clean on touched files.

Updated this round (2026-10-13, review follow-up)

  • Caller-side transport cancellation coverage: new regression test aborts the caller's signal while the SDK's own fetch signal stays un-aborted and asserts the signal the transport hands to fetch becomes aborted. Negative control verified: dropping requestSignal from the AbortSignal.any merge makes this test fail (it previously escaped coverage).
  • Ollama API-key help text (en locale) now states the key is only sent to HTTPS or loopback endpoints, and remote HTTP endpoints receive no credentials.
  • Dependency churn moved out: all vitest peer/coverage manifest edits and the lockfile changes are reverted — this branch now matches upstream/main's dependency state exactly. The alignment is back up as its own PR (chore(deps): align @vitest/coverage-v8 and @vitest/ui to the vitest 4.1.11 peer line #2037).

Verification at this head: 120/120 green in native-ollama.spec.ts + fetchers/ollama.test.ts; tsc --noEmit → 0 errors; per-file ESLint (--max-warnings=0) clean; prettier --check clean on touched files.

Updated this round (2026-10-13, review follow-up)

  • Replaced the local raceWithAbortSignal/createAbortError pair with the shared utils/abort-signal exports (rejectOnAbort + createAbortError("Ollama")), matching openai-codex.ts; abort errors now carry the provider name per the series contract. Undefined-signal call sites keep the no-race path explicit. Local helpers and their dedicated unit block removed (shared helpers covered by abort-signal.spec.ts).
  • The plain-HTTP credential gate now console.warns when ollamaApiKey is set but the endpoint is neither https nor loopback (key never logged); two new tests pin presence/absence.

Verification at this head (91dc04c): 87/87 green in native-ollama.spec.ts; tsc --noEmit → 0 errors; per-file ESLint (--max-warnings=0) clean with suppression counts unchanged; prettier --check clean on touched files. Negative controls: removing the warn fails exactly the remote-HTTP test (isolated); mutating the ported provider name fails exactly the already-aborted completePrompt test.

Stryker directive removal (equivalence notes)

Three directives removed from native-ollama.ts:

  1. MethodExpression,StringLiteral on the deepseek-r1 detection: the R1 branch and the default branch resolve to numerically identical temperature (DEEP_SEEK_DEFAULT_TEMPERATURE = 0.0), so flipping the detection cannot change the request payload for the covered model ids.
  2. LogicalOperator (&& -> ||) in if (onExternalAbort && externalAbortSignal): onExternalAbort is only assigned inside if (externalAbortSignal), so the pair is always set-together or unset-together; && and || agree on every reachable state.
  3. Same equivalence for if (onAbort && abortSignal) in completePrompt.

Credential-drop warning hardening (e7ca0b0)

The CWE-319 drop warning no longer logs ollamaBaseUrl verbatim: base URLs can embed credentials (user:pass@) or sensitive query values, so only the WHATWG origin (protocol//host:port) is echoed, with a fixed-phrase fallback when the host is unparseable. Tests pin the origin echo and the absence of credential/query material.

Timeout guard hardening (2c34c18)

Port of the #1300 CodeRabbit finding: completePrompt's raw timeoutMs guard now requires Number.isFinite and caps the delay at 2^31-1 ms (Node coerces larger/Infinity delays to 1ms, aborting almost immediately). The shared mergeAbortSignalAndTimeout helper gets the same treatment: AbortSignal.timeout throws ERR_OUT_OF_RANGE on Infinity and clamps overflowing delays to 1ms. Regression tests for both layers; negative controls fail exactly the new tests per revert.

Fractional-timeout rounding wave

Follow-up CR round: Node validates AbortSignal.timeout delays as uint32, so finite fractions (1500.5, 0.5) threw ERR_OUT_OF_RANGE like Infinity did. mergeAbortSignalAndTimeout now rounds delays up (a positive fraction never becomes 0 ms) before capping at 2^31-1 ms; regression test mergeAbortSignalAndTimeout(undefined, 1.5). Identical helper patch in every unit of the series (merge-order aware, canonical in #1293).

Also: the merged-transport cancellation test's dead else branch (accepted a post-abort success) replaced with an unconditional aborted-outcome assertion + mockChat-not-called pin.

Assertion strengthening (rounding wave follow-up)

The fractional-timeout test now spies AbortSignal.timeout and pins the received delay (2 for 1.5, 1 for 0.5, never 0) instead of only asserting no-throw plus eventual abort; a round-down mutation (Math.ceil -> Math.floor) fails exactly this test. Identical patch in every unit of the series (canonical in #1293).

Raw-guard fractional rounding (0d18b4d)

Port of the #1300 finding: the completePrompt raw setTimeout guard rounds fractional delays up (Math.ceil) before the cap, matching mergeAbortSignalAndTimeout semantics. Test pins the delay handed to setTimeout (1501 for 1500.5); negative control fails exactly that test.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Improved cancellation and timeout handling for Ollama requests, including model discovery and streaming. Cancellation errors are preserved, and request resources are cleaned up.
    • Ollama API keys are sent only to HTTPS or loopback endpoints. Remote HTTP requests omit credentials, while loopback requests avoid proxy routing.
    • Fixed handling of invalid and unusually large timeout values to prevent unexpected request cancellation.
  • Documentation
    • Clarified when Ollama API keys are sent and why remote HTTP endpoints do not receive them.

Native Ollama creates a client for each request, limits API-key transmission to HTTPS and loopback endpoints, and propagates cancellation through model discovery, transport, and stream handling. The change also updates endpoint and request tests, timeout handling, and API-key help text.

Changes: Ollama request lifecycle

Endpoint checks accept HTTPS and loopback hosts for API-key use. Fetch requests omit credentials for remote HTTP and disable proxying for credentialed loopback HTTP requests. Tests cover endpoint classification and client credential handling. Settings text describes when the key is sent.
Request-local clients and streaming cancellation
src/api/providers/native-ollama.ts, src/api/providers/__tests__/native-ollama.spec.ts, src/eslint-suppressions.json
Streaming requests use request-local clients and handle cancellation during model discovery and chat. The fetch transport combines request and SDK signals. Tests cover transport cancellation, stream cleanup, createMessage, reasoning tags, and system-prompt ordering.
Single-shot completion cancellation
src/api/providers/native-ollama.ts, src/api/providers/__tests__/native-ollama.spec.ts, src/api/providers/utils/abort-signal.ts, src/api/providers/utils/__tests__/abort-signal.spec.ts
Completions handle external aborts and timeouts during discovery and completion. AbortError propagates unchanged, and timeout and abort-listener cleanup is tested. Timeout utilities disable non-finite values and cap finite delays.

The previously identified cancellation and credential-exposure risks are addressed. No actionable merge-blocking risk remains after normal checks.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 4172a

The change improves cancellation isolation and limits credential forwarding. A development-only proxy interaction can nevertheless route credentialed local requests through the selected proxy. This requires explicitly enabled debugging; no production exploit is established.

Retained concerns

  • Low · security · inferred: Per-request native clients can adopt a newly enabled debug-proxy transport for credentialed HTTP loopback chat, unlike discovery's explicit proxy bypass. The selected proxy can then receive the bearer credential and chat payload. The changed exposure is the post-toggle case, not proxying already enabled before client creation. This is an opt-in Development-mode policy inconsistency; the precise baseline SDK transport behavior remains inferred.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The supported proxy concern requires a Development-mode session, an enabled selected proxy, and credentialed HTTP loopback native requests. A proxy operator could read those credentials and chat payloads. The credential's downstream privileges and any cross-tenant exposure are not established; no prompt-controlled path to enable the proxy is demonstrated.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — The deferred candidate's transport boundary has a supported proxy-routing path, but this inspection does not supply its missing verification receipt or establish a production vulnerability. The potentially worsened case is a later request adopting a proxy enabled after the original cached client would have been created. Startup-enabled proxy exposure already existed.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Discovery and native chat share the credential endpoint gate, but not the same proxy control. Credentialed HTTP loopback discovery sets proxy:false on both Axios operations; native chat delegates to the current global fetch without a corresponding loopback exception. The debug proxy's explicit MITM purpose is important counterevidence against treating this as unauthorized delegation.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Abort callbacks target request-local clients and controllers, preventing cancellation from invoking another request's client.abort(). Streaming cleanup removes its listener and aborts its controller on completion, failure, or iterator return; completion cleanup clears its manual timer and listener. These local guarantees do not establish that the remote server stops generation.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Define one explicit transport policy for credentialed HTTP loopback discovery and chat: either bypass proxying consistently or require a distinct credential-delegation opt-in for debugging. Preserve request-local cancellation when implementing that policy.

Full details: Regression Evidence

Explanation

The durable Ollama help-text change lacks required Playwright component visual coverage. The PR changes webview-ui/src/i18n/locales/en/settings.json:689, and Ollama.tsx:131-142 renders the text when a base URL is configured. The changed-file diff contains no visual test or snapshot. The existing Ollama.spec.tsx is a Vitest/RTL test and does not provide a Playwright screenshot. No Ollama visual fixture or Ollama screenshot exists under the provider snapshot directory.

Full details: Lifecycle Resource Cleanup

Explanation

The changed completePrompt path still creates two timeout resources. For every positive timeoutMs, lines 683-695 schedule a setTimeout, and line 726 calls mergeAbortSignalAndTimeout, which creates an additional AbortSignal.timeout() timer. On a successful short request, the finally block only clears timeoutId and removes the external listener (lines 756-760); it never aborts or disposes the native timeout signal. The native timeout can therefore remain scheduled until its deadline. The existing success test checks only clearTimeout, so it does not cover this resource.

Resolution

Use one cancelable timeout mechanism for completePrompt. Prefer the existing setTimeout to abort requestController, pass only that controller signal to model discovery, and remove the mergeAbortSignalAndTimeout call from this path. Alternatively, add explicit disposal for the timeout signal and invoke it in finally on success, failure, and cancellation. Add a regression test that completes successfully with a long positive timeoutMs and verifies that the timeout resource is disposed.

Preserve AbortError on the streaming path.

completePrompt rethrows AbortError unchanged so callers can detect cancellation by name === "AbortError" (Line 630). The streaming path does not do this. If client.abort() fires after the stream starts, the SDK rejects the iterator with an AbortError, and Line 536 wraps it into a generic Error. The name is lost, so callers cannot distinguish cancellation from a transport failure.

The existing test at src/api/providers/__tests__/native-ollama.spec.ts Lines 1929-1972 rejects the client.chat(...) promise, which is caught by the outer handler at Line 538 and rethrown unchanged. It does not cover a rejection raised while iterating the stream.

Rethrow AbortError unchanged in the inner catch, and add a test that aborts after the first chunk is yielded.

Prefer Vitest fake timers over manual setTimeout spies.

Three tests replace the global setTimeout and clearTimeout and never restore them inside the test. If restoreMocks is not enabled in the Vitest config, the stubs stay active for the rest of the file.

vi.useFakeTimers() with vi.advanceTimersByTime(...) covers the same behavior. It removes the as unknown as typeof setTimeout casts at Lines 834 and 959, and vi.useRealTimers() in afterEach restores the globals deterministically.

client.abort() does not cancel ollama 0.6.0 non-streaming requests. The model-list requests also ignore the signal, so abortSignal and timeoutMs can leave completePrompt pending.

Thread a composed signal through model discovery and the chat request, or use the streaming path. Add a pending-request test that asserts cancellation rejects with AbortError.

Complete cancellation handling for createMessage.

If the signal aborts while Line 420 awaits fetchModel(), client.abort() has no active stream to abort. The method does not re-check the signal before starting client.chat(). Also, an AbortError raised during stream iteration is wrapped at Line 536, so callers cannot identify cancellation. Ollama 0.6.0 tracks abortable requests only after a streaming request starts. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Move model discovery inside the outer try, re-check externalAbortSignal.aborted after it, and rethrow AbortError unchanged from the stream-processing catch. This also ensures the listener cleanup covers model-fetch failures. Add focused tests for abort-during-model-fetch and abort-during-stream behavior.

Series follow-up flag: adopt RequestConfigBuilder for abort/timeout option construction

This PR currently builds its abort/timeout request options directly with mergeAbortSignalAndTimeout(...) from src/api/providers/utils/abort-signal.ts. That is behaviorally identical to the RequestConfigBuilder path (src/api/providers/config-builder/request-config-builder.ts, introduced in #1008) - the builder wraps the same utility. The series plan is to make the builder the canonical call site for SDK request-option construction (typed TOptions variants per SDK), so this PR is flagged for that update.

Status: migration in the post-merge adoption PR. The refactor is mechanical (call-site substitution through the builder with a typed TOptions variant) and is deliberately kept out of this PR to preserve its already-green CI and review state.
Abort semantics (pre-abort fail-fast, mid-flight bridging, the timeoutMs > 0 guard, and normalization to AbortError) are pinned by this PR's regression tests and are preserved by the refactor.

Round 1 — final status: all checks green, changed-line coverage verified

Part of the abort-signal series addressing #404 (builds on #674, #901, #1008). native-ollama abort wiring.

Final verified 2026-08-20: all CI checks green on this head (0 pending / 0 failed), CodeRabbit review clean, and zero new bot findings after this commit.

  • Final head: 346eeb311 (rebased onto main 252c69b52)
  • Work in this round: request-local abort bridging in createMessage (fetch-level cancellation of the in-flight Ollama request) and completePrompt, with catch normalization to a standard AbortError.
  • Config builder: migration of the call sites to RequestConfigBuilder is scheduled for the post-merge adoption PR (see the config-builder status comment on this PR).
  • Changed-line coverage: 40/40 executable changed lines covered (100%) with the PR's own spec (all green).

Conflict resolved in src/api/providers/native-ollama.ts: main added the
model-cache interface (getModelCacheScope + fetchModels, GetModelsOptions /
ModelCacheScope / ModelRecord imports) around the legacy ensureClient
helper; this branch replaced ensureClient with a per-request
_createOllamaClient(requestSignal) for abort bridging. Kept main's two
model-cache methods and imports (fetchModels' getOllamaModels call matches
the branch's fetcher signature, including the optional signal), and kept
the branch's per-request client in place of ensureClient.

Verification at this head: 119/119 green across native-ollama.spec.ts and
fetchers/ollama.test.ts; tsc --noEmit 0 errors; eslint --max-warnings=0

…al help text, deps out

- native-ollama.spec: pin the caller side of the transport merge. The new
test aborts the caller's signal while the SDK's own fetch signal stays
un-aborted and asserts the signal the transport handed to fetch becomes
aborted (dropping requestSignal from the AbortSignal.any merge now
fails this test, which previously escaped coverage).
- fetchers/ollama help text (en locale): state that the API key is only
sent to HTTPS or loopback endpoints, so remote HTTP users know the key
is omitted rather than silently dropped.
- Move the vitest 4.1.11 / @vitest/coverage-v8 bumps (and their lockfile
churn) out of this unit per review; they go back up as their own
  dependency PR.

Verification at this head: 120/120 green in native-ollama.spec.ts +
fetchers/ollama.test.ts; tsc --noEmit 0 errors; eslint
--max-warnings=0 clean on touched files; prettier clean.
The peer alignment touched six manifests; the previous commit reverted
only the root and src ones, leaving the lockfile inconsistent with the
remaining @vitest/coverage-v8/@vitest/ui 4.1.11 entries (frozen-lockfile
installs failed). All manifests now match upstream/main again; the
alignment goes back up as its own dependency PR.

…I key

Replace the local raceWithAbortSignal/createAbortError pair with the
shared utils/abort-signal exports (rejectOnAbort +
createAbortError(providerName)), matching openai-codex.ts. The shared
helpers are strictly better shaped: the already-aborted branch
detaches a rejection handler from the pending promise, the listener
registers with { once: true }, and the error carries the provider
name (The Ollama request was aborted) per the series contract. Call
sites that may see an undefined signal (no metadata signal; merged
signal undefined when neither an external signal nor a positive
timeout applies) keep the no-race path explicit. The local helpers
and their dedicated unit block are removed; the shared helpers are
covered by utils/__tests__/abort-signal.spec.ts.

The plain-HTTP credential gate now console.warns when ollamaApiKey
is set but the endpoint is neither https nor loopback, so a bare 401
behind an auth proxy is diagnosable; the warning never echoes the
key. New tests pin the warning (content mentions ollamaApiKey, not
the key) and its absence on secure endpoints. Negative controls:
removing the warn fails exactly the remote-HTTP test (isolated);
mutating the ported provider name fails exactly the already-aborted
completePrompt test.

Verification at this head: 87/87 green in native-ollama.spec.ts; tsc
--noEmit 0 errors; eslint --max-warnings=0 clean with suppression
counts unchanged; prettier clean.

Per repo policy (AGENTS.md: Stryker suppression comments are banned;
the mutation gate rejects them in touched files). Equivalence
arguments for the resulting mutants are recorded in the PR body.
CodeRabbit (security minor): the drop warning interpolated
ollamaBaseUrl verbatim, so URL credentials (user:pass@) or sensitive
query values in the base URL leaked to the log. The warning now
derives the WHATWG origin (protocol//host:port) via new URL() and
falls back to a fixed phrase for an unparseable host. Tests cover a
base URL carrying credentials and a query token: the warning must
contain the origin and must not contain the secret, the token value,
or the word "token"; the secure-endpoint test now also pins the
attached Authorization header. Negative control: echoing the raw
host fails exactly the drop-warning test.
Port of the Zoo-Code-Org#1300 timeout guard finding (CodeRabbit): Node coerces
setTimeout delays above 2^31-1 ms (and Infinity) to 1 ms, so
completePrompt's timeout could abort almost immediately. The
provider guard now requires Number.isFinite and caps the delay at
2^31-1 ms; the shared mergeAbortSignalAndTimeout helper gets the
same treatment (AbortSignal.timeout throws ERR_OUT_OF_RANGE on
Infinity and clamps overflowing delays to 1 ms, breaking discovery
and merged-signal paths).

Regression tests: Infinity schedules no provider timer and means
"no timeout" in the helper; overflowing values schedule capped
timers. Negative controls fail exactly the new tests per revert.

298-302: Credentialed loopback chat can still use a patched global fetch.

The earlier review comment on this transport is still unresolved. The transport reads globalThis.fetch each time it builds a per-request client. Model discovery sets proxy: false for credentialed loopback HTTP, but chat has no equivalent bypass. If a proxy patch replaces globalThis.fetch after activation, a keyed http://127.0.0.1 chat request sends its Authorization header through that proxy.

CodeRabbit threads on 2c34c18:
- mergeAbortSignalAndTimeout now rounds fractional delays up before
  AbortSignal.timeout's uint32 validation (1500.5/0.5 threw
ERR_OUT_OF_RANGE); regression test for timeoutMs 1.5.
- The merged-transport cancellation test asserted its outcome with
an if/else that also accepted a post-abort success; controller.
abort() is synchronous while rejectOnAbort awaits discovery, so
the outcome is always the contract AbortError. Asserted
unconditionally plus mockChat-not-called; the old weak form hid a
resolve-after-abort regression (negative control: dropping the
  abort fails exactly this test).

CodeRabbit: the fractional-timeout test only proved the call did
not throw and eventually aborted - a round-down mutation (1.5 -> 1)
would still pass. The test now spies AbortSignal.timeout and pins
the received delay: 2 for 1.5 and 1 for 0.5 (never 0). Negative

Port of the Zoo-Code-Org#1300 CodeRabbit finding: the raw setTimeout path now
applies Math.ceil before the cap so fractional delays round up
(1500.5 -> 1501) instead of Node truncating to 1500, matching
mergeAbortSignalAndTimeout semantics. New test pins the delay
handed to setTimeout; negative control fails exactly that test.
