This PR adds guardedWrite, the single publish entry point every write tool will use. It turns "last writer wins silently" into "a write that was not earned by a read fails with a remediation the model can act on": create-if-absent for new files, compare-and-swap on the version token for observed files, a cancellation re-check before publication, and the read-first / re-read-then-retry remediation text on refusal. All publishes for one path run on a per-path FIFO chain, so concurrent writes to the same file are ordered.

It is the fifth of nine PRs for epic #1375 (chain tracked on #1991), and the core the remaining units wire their tools into.

Related GitHub Issue

Closes: #2020 (this unit's tracking issue).
Refs: #1991 (chain tracking), #1375 (epic).

Description

What this PR changes:

  1. guardedWrite(): resolves the target, checks containment, picks the guard from the task's ObservationRegistry - create-if-absent, recreate, compare-and-swap on the version token, or the unobserved-edit remediation - and runs the publish on the per-path FIFO chain.
  2. createIfAbsent and replaceIfVersion semantics: a stale version token or an unobserved overwrite is refused instead of clobbering the file.
  3. Cancellation is re-checked when the link is dequeued, before publication - a write cancelled while queued does not publish.
  4. The model-facing remediation on rejection: re-read the file, then retry.

Why the diff looks bigger than the change: the chain is non-cumulative - this branch is based on main and carries its own copy of the earlier units' content, which the GitHub diff shows as context.

Review focus: src/core/tools/guardedWrite.ts and src/core/tools/__tests__/guardedWrite.spec.ts.

Test Procedure

From the repository root, with dependencies installed:

pnpm --dir src exec vitest run --globals core/tools/__tests__/guardedWrite.spec.ts # expect 47 passed
pnpm --dir src exec eslint --max-warnings=0 core/tools/guardedWrite.ts core/tools/__tests__/guardedWrite.spec.ts

Environment: Windows 11, Node 20, unit layer only.

Re-review round (b95efab)

Two Minor findings fixed with regression tests and negative controls:

  • Copy-fallback durability: the COPYFILE_EXCL fallback creates a NEW
inode at the target that nothing fsynced (the staged inode's pre-commit
fsync does not cover it; step 4b flushes only the parent directory).
    The copied target is now opened and fsynced right after the fallback;
failure reports PostCommitDurabilityError (new copied-target message
variant) instead of a swallowed success. NC: removing the flush reddens
exactly the two new copy tests.
  • Lock-path termination: canonicalLockPath recursed with a fresh
per-frame hop bound, so a cycle whose length does not divide 8
    (a -> b -> c -> a) recursed forever on the lock path. The recursion now
carries a total budget of 64 hops; when spent, the next frame walks
zero hops and canonicalizes the cycle member it stopped on. NC: the
unbounded form reddens exactly the new 3-cycle test (timeout).

Windows flush-access fix (a75f05c)

The copy-fallback target flush now opens with "r+" (Windows
FlushFileBuffers requires GENERIC_WRITE; a read-only handle could fail
the flush and report a false durability error on published bytes). The
test pins the write-access flag; NC: reverting to "r" reddens exactly
that test. 68/68 green.

Learning: In src/services/file-safety/safeWriteText.ts, safeWriteText intentionally treats all post-commit parent-directory fsync failures, including EINVAL and EBADF, as PostCommitDurabilityError. A successful return must not imply durability that the filesystem did not grant. The error identifies the target where committed content remains, while callers decide how to handle retries. Do not recommend silently tolerating unsupported directory-fsync errors.
📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • File reads now report when returned content is clipped or incomplete, helping distinguish a full read from a partial one.
    • File updates are checked against the version previously read, reducing the risk of overwriting changes made in the meantime.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Writes now better handle symbolic links and concurrent file changes, and reject paths outside the task workspace.
    • JSON writes preserve existing file permissions and are more resilient to failures during saving and cleanup.

The changes add per-task file observations and guarded writes, plus shared text-publication and canonical-lock-path utilities. Reads record matching file versions and completeness. Writes validate observations, workspace paths, and cancellation before publishing. JSON writes use resolved targets and delegate publication to safeWriteText.

Changes: File observation and write safety

Layer / File(s) Summary
Record read observations and completeness
src/core/task/observationRegistry.ts, src/core/task/Task.ts, src/core/tools/ReadFileTool.ts, src/integrations/misc/indentation-reader.ts, src/core/task/__tests__/*, src/core/tools/__tests__/readFileTool.spec.ts, src/integrations/misc/__tests__/*
Tasks now own observation registries. Native and legacy reads record matching version tokens, and completeness reflects clipping, truncation, partial views, and lossy decoding. Indentation-reader results distinguish clipped lines from omitted lines.
Resolve, stage, and publish files
src/services/file-safety/safeWriteText.ts, src/services/file-safety/__tests__/safeWriteText.spec.ts, src/utils/fileLock.ts, src/utils/__tests__/fileLock.spec.ts
safeWriteText resolves targets, stages and syncs content, and supports backups, no-replace publication, and target and ancestor checks. fileLock uses canonical lock paths while preserving caller paths for operations.
Enforce guarded write rules
src/core/tools/guardedWrite.ts, src/core/tools/__tests__/guardedWrite.spec.ts, src/core/task/Task.ts, src/core/task/__tests__/Task.spec.ts
Guarded writes serialize by path and apply create, edit, and version-check rules. They validate workspace containment and cancellation, publish under a resolved-path lock, and refresh observations after successful writes.
Use resolved targets for JSON writes
src/utils/safeWriteJson.ts, src/utils/__tests__/safeWriteJson*.spec.ts, src/eslint-suppressions.json
safeWriteJson uses resolved lock and publish targets, reads and merges JSON at the resolved target, and delegates publication and backup handling to safeWriteText.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to bce5c

A filesystem error can occur after saved permissions have changed, while previously allowed actions remain authorized in memory until a refresh. This conditional risk requires existing authorization and a publication failure; no new remote access or privilege escalation was demonstrated.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · inferred: The newly introduced committed-but-rejected JSON outcome is not reconciled by MCP permission updates. A POSIX directory-sync failure can occur after the configuration rename; the rejection skips live tool-permission refresh while programmatic-update suppression can discard watcher events. Removing an existing alwaysAllow grant can therefore leave the prior in-memory grant available to automatic approval until another refresh. This requires an existing grant, enabled MCP automatic approval, and the filesystem failure; actual tool execution under this condition was not demonstrated.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The material exposure is local filesystem state and authorization derived from configuration written through the shared JSON utility. MCP updates can affect global or project configuration; task-history persistence also inherits the changed failure contract. The available evidence does not establish cross-tenant exposure or additional operating-system privileges.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — A model-requested MCP tool could remain eligible for automatic approval after a saved grant removal if directory synchronization fails after commit and the live permission refresh is skipped. The approval decision consults the supplied server-tool flags and additionally requires global MCP automatic approval. No evidence establishes attacker control of the filesystem failure or demonstrates execution through this conditional path.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Read observations follow ignore checks and user approval. Within the new guard, observations authorize mutation scope and detect stale versions; they are not a replacement for path-access authorization or protection against non-cooperating filesystem writers. Existing model-write publication remains outside this new guard boundary.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — With backup mode enabled, a post-commit directory-sync failure leaves new content at the destination and old content at a backup path, because backup deletion is success-only and rollback is pre-commit-only. JSON cleanup does not remove that backup. Backup retention after an unlink failure already existed at the base; this PR adds another retention path without establishing broader read permissions.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Handle committed-but-not-durable outcomes explicitly at security-sensitive callers: reconcile live permissions with the published configuration or suspend automatic approval until reconciliation completes. Give retained backups explicit cleanup and recovery ownership without rolling old content over an already committed update.

Full details: Regression Evidence

Explanation

The standing regression remains. src/utils/fileLock.ts:68-77 returns the lexical absolute path when realpath fails with a non-ENOENT and non-ENOTDIR error, including EACCES, EIO, or a code-less error. The changed src/utils/__tests__/fileLock.spec.ts covers successful resolution, ENOENT, symlinks, and cycles, but no test drives this fallback and asserts the lock key or caller-path behavior. This is an affected error branch in the changed lock-key behavior.

Resolution

Add focused fileLock.spec.ts coverage that makes readlink report a non-link and makes realpath reject with EACCES; assert that lock acquisition succeeds, proper-lockfile.lock receives the lexical absolute path, and withFileLock passes the caller path to its operation. Also cover a code-less error and ENOTDIR if that fallback remains supported.

Full details: Security Boundaries

Explanation

The workspace allowlist can still be bypassed in changed code. guardedWrite.ts:394-412 records identities only with fs.stat, which follows symlinks, and safeWriteText.ts:541-552 repeats that pathname-based check. A local concurrent process can move an authorized parent directory outside the workspace and replace the original parent name with a symlink to that same directory. The identity check still matches, but safeWriteText.ts:634 (fs.link) or :682 (fs.rename) resolves the source and target through the symlink and publishes outside the workspace. This is a concrete changed-path bypass of the workspace containment control.

Resolution

Use no-follow directory handles and descriptor-relative publication. Open and pin the workspace and target-parent directories with symlink rejection, validate their identities through those handles, and commit relative to the pinned parent handle with descriptor-relative no-replace or rename operations. Reject any missing or changed parent component. Add a regression test that moves an authorized parent outside the workspace, replaces its original name with a symlink to the moved directory, and verifies that the publish is rejected and no outside file changes.

Full details: Persistence Integrity

Explanation

The previous persistence-integrity failure remains in the reviewed head. In changed src/services/file-safety/safeWriteText.ts, failIfExist falls back from fs.link to fs.copyFile(tempPath, targetPath, COPYFILE_EXCL) when hard links are unavailable. This writes directly to the final target and can expose partial content. A mid-copy EIO or ENOSPC is rethrown, while cleanup removes the staging path but not the partially created target. Changed src/core/tools/guardedWrite.ts enables this path for create writes, so a create on a filesystem without hard-link support can leave truncated state visible to readers.

Resolution

Do not copy directly into the final target for the no-replace fallback. Fail the guarded create with an explicit unsupported-filesystem error and clean all staging artifacts, or implement a platform-specific atomic no-replace commit. If a non-atomic fallback remains, remove or quarantine the destination after copy failure, report that the target may be partial, and add a regression test for mid-copy failure with concurrent-reader coverage.

Full details: Lifecycle Resource Cleanup

Explanation

The changed safeWriteText path still leaks a backup file. After a successful backup:true publish, src/services/file-safety/safeWriteText.ts:724-731 calls fs.unlink(backupPath) once and swallows errors. An EPERM or EBUSY leaves .safeWriteText.bak_* on disk, while the function returns success and performs no later cleanup. The changed test at safeWriteText.spec.ts:347-368 explicitly accepts this orphaned file.

465-479: A post-commit durability failure still restores the backup over the committed content.

The issue from the earlier review is still present in this revision.

  1. Line 409 renames tempPath onto targetPath. The new content is now published.
  2. If the parent-directory fsync then fails, Line 428 throws PostCommitDurabilityError.
  3. When backup: true, backupPath && releaseBackupOnSuccess is still true at Line 466.
  4. Line 468 then renames backupPath back onto targetPath. The old content replaces the new content.
  5. The function still throws PostCommitDurabilityError, whose message says the content is at the target. That statement is false at this point.

safeWriteJson always passes backup: true (src/utils/safeWriteJson.ts, around Lines 123-131), so every JSON write can reach this path. The test at src/services/file-safety/__tests__/safeWriteText.spec.ts Lines 869-887 runs without backup, so it does not cover this case.

Fix:

  • Set a committed flag right after the Step 4 rename.
  • If committed is true, do not restore the backup. Remove the backup on a best-effort basis, then rethrow.
  • Add a backup: true test for this path.
🐛 Proposed fix

… the test title

The committed guard only exists for backup mode, but the post-commit fsync test ran
without backup, so removing the guard would not fail any test. Added the backup:true
case asserting that the backup is not renamed back over the committed content.

The safeWriteJson test title said the original error is re-thrown while the assertions
require RollbackFailureError with the publish failure as cause; the title and the stale
comment now match the assertions.

Tests: 51 passed in safeWriteText.spec.ts, 23 passed 1 skipped in safeWriteJson.test.ts,
ESLint clean with --max-warnings=0 on both.
guardedWrite resolved relPathOrAbsolute with path.resolve(task.cwd, ...), which keeps an absolute input unchanged and
collapses ".." segments. The publish helper therefore accepted a target anywhere on the machine: the rooignore rules,
protected-path rules and the user-approval flow are enforced in the tool layer, so a caller that forwards a
model-supplied path without those checks - or a future caller that forgets them - would publish outside the workspace.

Containment is now decided inside guardedWrite, before the link is queued, before the file lock, and before any
filesystem mutation:
- lexical: the resolved path must be inside task.cwd (separator-aware, so a sibling entry named "..x" is not mistaken
  for an escape);
- canonical: both sides are resolved through symlinks and compared again, because the publish resolves through a link
and a planted in-workspace link can land outside it. A missing target is walked up to its nearest existing
ancestor (a create has no target yet); any other realpath failure is rejected rather than guessed, and a workspace
that cannot be resolved at all falls back to the lexical decision.

Rejections use GuardRejectedError with the model-facing remediation, and the display path stays the caller's own
spelling so no user-specific absolute path enters the model's context.

Tests: four cases in guardedWrite.spec - an absolute path outside the workspace rejected with no lock, no publish and
no stat; a dot-dot escape rejected; a target whose resolved path leaves the workspace rejected; and a control where
the resolved path stays inside and the publish proceeds. Verified as real regression tests: with the two checks
disabled the three rejection cases fail. 738 passed / 5 skipped across core/tools + integrations/editor +
observationRegistry; tsc and eslint clean.
check-types runs tsc --noEmit over the whole project: the mockImplementation callback has to accept PathLike, not
string. Letting the parameter type be inferred from the mocked signature keeps it correct without a cast.
…tainment under the lock

Two gaps in the containment check added in 86d3ee6:

1. The workspace realpath swallowed every error. Only ENOENT (no workspace to contain the write in) may fall back to
the lexical decision; EACCES or ELOOP means the root exists but cannot be resolved, so a symlink inside the
workspace would never be checked. Those now reject with a GuardRejectedError instead of quietly disabling the
   canonical half of the guard.

2. The canonical check ran before the write was queued, so a symlink could be swapped in while the link waited on the
per-path FIFO chain and on the file lock, and the publish would follow the new link. createIfAbsent and
replaceIfVersion now take a verifyTarget hook, called under the lock immediately before safeWriteText - the same
place the cancellation check is re-run - so the authorization is decided against the path as it is at publish time.

Tests: the workspace realpath rejecting with EACCES refuses the write with no publish; a target that resolves inside
the workspace when queued and outside it under the lock is refused, with the lookup count proving the second check
ran. Both verified as real regression tests (loosening the catch / removing the hook makes each fail). 740 passed / 5
skipped across core/tools + integrations/editor + observationRegistry; no new tsc errors; eslint clean.
…e lock key

- ReadFileTool: the clipping-only notice interpolated the content with four leading tabs, so the
first numbered line reached the model indented, and it disagreed with the truncated branch
(one tab). The content now uses the same single tab as that branch, and the comment above it
was re-indented. The spec pins the emitted indentation; restoring the four tabs fails it.
- fileLock: safeWriteJson locks resolveLockKey(path) while every withFileLock caller - including
TaskHistoryStore.delete/deleteMany - locked the lexical path, so with a symlinked ancestor a
delete and a write took different mutexes. acquireFileLock now canonicalizes the key
(canonicalLockPath: nearest existing ancestor via realpath, missing components re-appended), so
all callers contend the same way safeWriteJson does. The operation still receives the caller's
own absolute path: on Windows realpath can answer with the 8.3 short form, and rewriting the
path a caller unlinks or compares would change behavior for every caller.

New utils/__tests__/fileLock.spec.ts pins both halves (lock key canonical, callback path the
caller's). Controls: lexical key fails 3 tests; four tabs fails 1 test.
guardedWrite checks task.abort when its link dequeues and again through the publish
callback. task.abort is a mutable flag: Task.abortTask and dispose set it to true, and
Task.resumeAfterDelegation resets it to false. A write parked on a path chain behind another
write can therefore sit through a cancel-then-resume, see abort false again when its turn
arrives, and publish for a run that was already cancelled.

Task now carries a monotonic cancellationGeneration, bumped at every site that sets abort.
guardedWrite captures it before queueing and requires it to match both at dequeue and
immediately before the publish, so clearing abort during a later resume cannot revive work
that belongs to a cancelled run.

Regression test queues a write behind another task's write, cancels and resumes the queued
task before its turn, and asserts the write rejects without publishing. Verified as a real
pin: with the guardedWrite change stashed the new test fails, with it applied the file's 54
tests pass.

Local: core/tools + core/task lanes 1386 passed / 5 skipped across 75 files; eslint clean on
all three files; tsc adds no new diagnostics (baseline 50 pre-existing environment errors
unchanged).
createIfAbsent checked fs.access() under the advisory lock and then published with
safeWriteText, whose commit is fs.rename - which replaces an existing destination on
POSIX. The advisory lock only serializes writers that take it, so any other filesystem
writer could create the target inside the check-to-commit gap and have its newer file
silently displaced. A second access check would leave the same race.

safeWriteText gains failIfExist: the commit becomes link(2), the only atomic no-replace
publish - it fails EEXIST for an existing name and does not follow a symlink placed at
that name - and the staged copy is removed once the name points at it. A collision
raises TargetExistsError, which createIfAbsent turns into the same read-first
GuardRejectedError the pre-check produces. replaceIfVersion keeps the replacing rename,
because replacement is what that path intends.

Tests: safeWriteText covers both commit shapes (link when absent, EEXIST refusal with the
staged copy cleaned up and nothing replaced); guardedWrite covers the race where the
absence check passes and the commit itself collides.

Local: core/tools + core/task + services/file-safety + utils lanes 2135 passed / 7 skipped
across 119 files; eslint clean on all four files; tsc unchanged from the 50-error local
baseline.
assertCanonicalInsideWorkspace decided containment on one resolution of the path and
threw the result away; safeWriteText then resolved the same path again for its commit.
A local process that swapped an in-workspace symlink to point outside the workspace
between those two resolutions had the write follow the new target, so the containment
decision was about a file that was never published to.

The containment check now returns the canonical target it authorized, and both publish
paths pass it to safeWriteText as expectedResolvedPath. safeWriteText compares its own
resolution against the authorized value before it stages anything and fails closed with
TargetMovedError when they differ, carrying both paths.

Tests: safeWriteText refuses a publish whose path no longer resolves to the authorized
target (no staging, no rename, no link); the guard-level test pins that the authorized
canonical path is forwarded to the publish.

Local: core/tools + core/task + services/file-safety + utils lanes 2136 passed / 7 skipped
across 119 files; eslint clean on all four files; tsc unchanged from the 50-error local
baseline.
…e at the commit edge

Five review findings on the no-replace publish, all at the same commit edge:

- An absent target resolved lexically while the guard pins the canonical
  nearest-ancestor path (guardedWrite#realpathNearest). A guarded create through a
symlinked ancestor therefore aborted with TargetMovedError although nothing moved.
resolvePublishTarget now canonicalizes the nearest existing ancestor and re-appends
the missing components, the same rule the pin is produced with.
- link(2) is the no-replace commit, but FAT32/exFAT and some SMB mounts have no hard
links (EPERM/ENOTSUP/ENOSYS) and every guarded create failed there. Fall back to
copyFile with COPYFILE_EXCL: the EEXIST verdict is unchanged, and the documented
limit is that the copy is not atomic the way link(2) is.
- The staged name was unlinked before the write was marked committed. An antivirus
handle on Windows makes that unlink fail with EBUSY/EPERM after the target already
exists, so the model was told the create failed and its retry hit 'already exists'
for content it had written. Mark the commit first and remove the staged name on a
  best-effort basis.
- canonicalLockPath resolved a dangling file symlink to <canonicalDir>/<link name>
while resolveLockKey walks readlink to the referent, so a raw withFileLock caller
and a safeWriteJson peer stopped excluding each other during a backup-mode commit.
The lock path now walks the referent too, bounded against a link cycle.
- The no-replace EEXIST test sat outside any describe, so it only passed because of
the previous test's mock state; it now lives next to its success case and passes
  standalone (vitest -t).

Pins: lexical fallback fails the symlinked-ancestor test; a strict unlink fails the
EBUSY test; removing the fallback branch fails the ENOTSUP test.

Local: services/file-safety + core/tools + utils = 1452 passed / 7 skipped; tsc 50
(unchanged baseline); eslint 0 err / 0 warn on all five touched files.
…he authorized directory chain

Security Boundaries: the workspace boundary was decided on a canonical path, but the
publish resolved the path again and only compared the resulting NAME
(expectedResolvedPath). Two gaps followed. (1) An ENOENT on the workspace realpath fell
back to the lexical-only decision - the exact decision a symlink defeats. (2) Nothing
pinned the DIRECTORIES the decision walked, so a parent swapped for a link to outside
the workspace kept the same target name and the same resolved path, and the commit
followed the new link.

Now: any workspace realpath failure (ENOENT included) is refused - no canonical root
means no containment decision, so the write is not published on a weaker guarantee.
The check also records the (dev, ino) identity of every existing directory between the
canonical workspace root and the target's parent. The guard re-validates that pin under
the lock, immediately before the publish, and safeWriteText re-validates it again at
Step 2b, right before the backup rename and the commit, so a replaced or vanished
ancestor aborts the commit (AncestorReplacedError) instead of writing through the new
link. Node has no descriptor-relative rename, so a swap landing after that last check
and before the rename is not eliminable here; the window is narrowed from the whole
guard to the commit itself, and the comment on the option says so.

Lifecycle Resource Cleanup: the cancellation generation was captured after the
containment awaits. A cancel landing inside those awaits - then a resume - left the
write holding the POST-cancel generation, so the dequeue comparison passed and the
cancelled run's content published. The generation is now captured before the first
await, and an already-aborted task is refused before any filesystem work.

Regression Evidence: Task-level coverage for the generation contract the guard depends
on - starts at zero, advances on abortTask(), stays advanced across
resumeAfterDelegation() clearing abort, advances again on a second cancel, and advances
on dispose() with no explicit cancel.

Tests: 5 new guardedWrite cases (ENOENT workspace refused; ancestor identities pinned;
parent swapped after the check refused; already-cancelled task refused before any
containment work; cancel landing inside the pre-publish check refused), 3 new
safeWriteText cases (replaced ancestor aborts the commit and cleans the staged copy;
unchanged identities publish normally; vanished ancestor aborts the commit), 2 new Task
cases. The suite default now resolves the fixture workspace (identity realpath) instead
of relying on the ENOENT fallback, so every guardedWrite test runs the canonical path.

Local: 293 passed across guardedWrite / safeWriteText / Task.dispose / Task.spec, plus
152 passed across safeWriteJson / safeWriteJson.lockKey / fileLock / safeWriteText /
guardedWrite. Negative controls, each mutate -> FAIL -> restore -> PASS: ancestor check
neutered in safeWriteText (3 fail); ENOENT lexical fallback restored (workspace test
fails); generation captured after the containment await (in-flight-cancel test fails);
pre-await abort reject neutered (already-cancelled test fails); guard-level ancestor
re-check neutered (swapped-parent test fails). tsc --noEmit 487 errors before and after
(unchanged branch baseline, 0 in touched files). eslint 0 errors / 0 warnings on the 5
touched files; eslint-suppressions.json untouched.
…ft behind

The mechanical rewrite of the publish assertions left `failIfExist: true` twice in six
object literals. TypeScript rejects a duplicate key in an object literal (TS1117),
so the required `compile` check (pnpm run check-types in src) failed on the branch
while every unit test still passed. One key per literal; assertions unchanged.
Port of the Zoo-Code-Org#1917 fix into this unit: the unit branches are not cumulative, so this
branch carries its own copy of safeWriteText's lock-key helper and the same defect.

canonicalDirKey() canonicalized only the immediate parent and fell back to that literal
spelling on ENOENT. A writer whose parent directory already existed canonicalized through
a symlinked ancestor (or a Windows short name) while a writer racing to create the same
directory got the literal path, so the two took different locks for one file and a
read-modify-write lost one side. It now walks up to the nearest ancestor that exists,
canonicalizes that, and re-joins the missing components; a realpath failure that is not
ENOENT is propagated instead of being papered over with a key that may be wrong.

Identifiers and comments are kept identical to the other units so the merge resolves
trivially.
Port of the Zoo-Code-Org#1918 Security Boundaries fix into this unit's copy of the guard (the unit
branches are not cumulative).

realpathNearest() walked up to the nearest existing ancestor and re-joined the lexical
names of the components above it. ENOENT cannot tell a directory that has not been
created yet from a component that EXISTS as a symlink whose referent is gone, so a
dangling link in the middle of the path was authorized as if it were a missing directory:
the containment check passed on the re-joined lexical path and the publish then created
the file wherever the link pointed. The walk now lstats each missing component and refuses
a link that does not resolve.
Characterization test for the guard's pin contract, added while fixing the same shape in
U6 (Zoo-Code-Org#1915) where the two sides did NOT agree.

A create into a directory that does not exist yet, under a workspace that resolves
through a link (the macOS /var -> /private/var shape): the containment check canonicalizes
through the nearest existing ancestor, and safeWriteText's resolvePublishTarget does the
same, so the write must proceed and expectedResolvedPath must be that same canonical
spelling. If either side changes to a different spelling of the same file, the pin rejects
a write that was just authorized - which is exactly what happened on the U6 branch.
This branch carries a pre-U1 copy of the publish primitive: Step 3 still renamed the
target out of the way to make the backup. U1 replaced that with a copy, because renaming
the target away leaves the canonical path absent for the whole commit window - readers see
a missing file, and a concurrent writer can create a new target that a later rollback then
destroys. Ported from fws/u1-atomic-publish with the identifiers, comments and test names
kept identical so the merge conflict resolves to U1's version.

What the port brings: the copy (seeded with openSync "wx" at 0o600 before any content
exists, then chmod + fsync), the inner catch that removes a partial copy and reports the
leftover path on OrphanedBackupError when it cannot, and a failure handler that treats the
backup as a copy - it is removed, never renamed back over the target. RollbackFailureError
and the committed flag are gone with it, exactly as in U1: with copy semantics there is
nothing to roll back.

Deliberately NOT ported: U1's step-6 cleanup retry and its warning sink. That part depends
on the onWarning option, which this unit's copy of the primitive does not have yet; pulling
it in would be U1's feature work, not this unit's. The merge note for safeWriteText.ts is
"resolve to U1's version plus this unit's additions".

The unit's own safeWriteJson is NEWER than U1's (it delegates the publish to safeWriteText
instead of doing its own renames), so its tests were not copied from U1. They were aligned
with the copy semantics the same way the other units in the chain already have them: the
backup-rename scenario test is dropped, the commit-failure tests now pin that the previous
content stays at the target and the backup copy is removed.

Verification: safeWriteText spec 66 passed, safeWriteJson 23 passed / 1 skipped, guardedWrite
62, lockKey + integration suites green (132 across the three file-safety/guard files);
src-level tsc (cwd=src) 50 = this branch's baseline with 0 errors in the touched files;
eslint --max-warnings=0 clean; eslint-suppressions.json byte-identical.
Negative controls, blast radius as measured: seeding the backup without "wx" fails exactly
1 test ("creates the backup privately before its content exists, then fsyncs it"); making
the failure handler rename the copy back over the target fails 4 ("a failed commit keeps the
previous content at the target and removes the backup copy", "a failed commit does not move
the target, so nothing has to be rolled back", "a failed post-commit directory fsync does not
roll the backup back over the published content", "releases the staged file, its copy and its
own staging directory before throwing"). Both restores were byte-identical.
Zoo-Code-Org#2038 turned @typescript-eslint/no-unused-vars back on in src, and Zoo-Code-Org#799
added pnpm format:check to the Code QA compile job. Replaying this unit
onto that main exposed:

- unused bindings left by main's dead-code removal (ReadFileTool /
SafeWriteTextOptions / lockfile imports, the never-read committed
flag, four write-path destructurings whose value no assertion reads),
  plus a duplicate Task import the conflict merge left behind;
- prettier-canonical formatting under the repo config (the unit's files
  predate the format gate).

No behavior change: 9 unit specs 505 passed / 1 skipped, eslint clean,
prettier clean, tsc adds nothing beyond the pre-existing local
donor-package drift.

flow, open the published `targetPath` and fsync its new inode before returning.
If that fsync fails, throw `PostCommitDurabilityError` because the target is

- Around line 37-47: Remove the recursive re-entry in `canonicalLockPath`, which
allows symlink cycles to restart the eight-hop walk indefinitely; use the cursor
reached by that single bounded walk for subsequent path canonicalization and
fallback handling. Add a regression test in `fileLock.spec.ts` with a three-link
`readlink` cycle asserting `acquireFileLock` resolves and `readlink` is called
at most eight times.

Learning: In src/utils/fileLock.ts, acquireFileLock canonicalizes the advisory lock key through canonicalLockPath, while withFileLock passes the caller's lexical absolute path to its operation. Keep lock-key canonicalization separate from operation-path handling: Windows realpath can return an 8.3 short path, and substituting that path can change caller comparisons or unlink behavior. Task-history deletion and JSON writes share this lock abstraction.

The missing generation increments are not established as a reachable defect. No non-test caller of requestAbort() or requestDispose() was found in the inspected src TypeScript sources. The required cancellation-and-resume path to a queued guardedWrite is therefore not established.

The proposed change would modify two request methods without evidence that they are used as production cancellation entry points.

…to-merge dropped

The rebase onto main's new unicode tests auto-merged them in but lost this
unit's hasClippedLines additions to the expected objects, so the three
clipping tests asserted the pre-feature shape and failed on CI (and
locally). Restoring the unit's spec content: 76 tests green across the
indentation-reader specs.

…allback

The COPYFILE_EXCL fallback (FAT32/exFAT/SMB mounts without hard links)
creates a NEW inode at the target: the staged inode's pre-commit fsync
does not cover it, and step 4b fsyncs only the parent directory. A
crash right after the publish could therefore leave a zero-length or
partial target while the write had reported success - breaking the
module's PostCommitDurabilityError contract - and the caller's retry
would then get the 'already exists' verdict on damaged bytes.

The copied target is now opened and fsynced immediately after the
fallback copy; a failure is reported as PostCommitDurabilityError (new
copied-target message variant on the existing class) - the same
durability verdict the directory fsync failure gets, never a swallowed
success.

Also bounds canonicalLockPath's link-walk recursion with a TOTAL hop
budget (64) across frames. The per-frame bound of 8 did not terminate:
a cycle whose length does not divide 8 (a -> b -> c -> a) makes every
frame land on a different cycle member and recurse forever, and this
runs on the lock path - resolveLockKey hands a cycle member to
withFileLock - so the hang took guardedWrite and safeWriteJson down
with it. Once the budget is spent the next frame walks zero hops and
canonicalizes the ancestors of the cycle member it stopped on.

Regression tests: fsync-after-copy (order-pinned after copyFile),
fsync-failure durability verdict, and a 3-cycle termination test with a
timer-yielding readlink so a regression fails on the test timeout
instead of starving the event loop. Negative controls: removing the
fsync block reddens exactly the two new copy tests; restoring the
unbounded recursion reddens exactly the cycle test (timeout).

73/73 green across the two specs, eslint clean (suppressions unchanged),
prettier clean, tsc adds nothing beyond the known local donor drift.
CI check-types flagged fsPromises.readlink.mock (TS2339 on the raw
typed function); route through vi.mocked like every other mock access
in this file. Behavior unchanged (5/5 green).

File: src/utils/safeWriteJson.ts:71-80

Learning: In src/utils/fileLock.ts, acquireFileLock canonicalizes the advisory lock key through canonicalLockPath, while withFileLock passes the caller's lexical absolute path to its operation. Keep lock-key canonicalization separate from operation-path handling: Windows realpath can return an 8.3 short path, and substituting that path can change caller comparisons or unlink behavior. Task-history deletion and JSON writes share this lock abstraction.

Already reviewed the last commit. Use @coderabbitai full review to rerun a review of the entire changeset.

Note: CodeRabbit is an incremental review system and does not re-review already reviewed commits. This command is applicable only when automatic reviews are paused.

Windows FlushFileBuffers requires GENERIC_WRITE on the handle, so the
copy-fallback flush opened with "r" can fail the flush and report a
false PostCommitDurabilityError on bytes that are already published -
a later create attempt then sees the published target as a conflict.
Open "r+", matching the existing backup fsync path; the invocation-order
pin asserts the write-access flag (NC: reverting to "r" reddens exactly
that test). 68/68 green.
