- Around line 113-119: Update the fixture used by the “renders the trigger with
the current model id” test so defaultModelId is the Sonnet ID while the active
model remains the Opus ID. Keep the trigger assertion checking the Opus ID to
ensure it verifies the normal selectedModelId display path rather than the
default fallback.
Review comments at @webview-ui/src/components/chat/ChatModelSelector.tsx:
- Around line 45-51: Update the displayValue calculation in ChatModelSelector so
it depends only on the configured or selected model, not searchValue. Remove
searchValue from the fallback and dependency list, preserving the existing
displayTransform behavior so typing a query does not change the trigger label or
selected-row highlight.
- Around line 74-81: Update ChatModelSelector so the model-selection trigger is
disabled when currentApiConfigName is missing, and make onSelect return early in
that case before posting the upsertApiConfiguration message.
Review comments at
@webview-ui/src/components/chat/hooks/useChatModelSelector.ts:
- Around line 345-350: Update the OpenAI model loading logic in the
useChatModelSelector hook to track whether an OpenAI models response has arrived
separately from the model list length. Mark the response received when handling
openAiModels, use that state in the isLoading calculation so an empty or failed
response ends loading, and reset it when the provider changes or a new request
is posted.
- Around line 155-221: Correlate message-based model responses with the request
that produced them so late responses cannot repopulate state after a provider
switch. Update the shared message contract to carry a correlation ID on each
model request and response, have the request effect in the hook generate and
track the current ID, and make its onMessage listener apply results only when
the response ID matches. Update the corresponding extension handlers to
propagate the ID from each request into its response.

webview-ui/src/components/chat/hooks/useChatModelSelector.ts (1)
181-186: 💤 Low valueThe provider-switch reset can discard a model response that arrives after the request.
Line 186 depends on
activeProvider, and React runs effects in declaration order. On mount and on each provider switch, the reset effect at Lines 181-186 runs before the request effect at Lines 192-221. The reset does not run again later, so a response that arrives after the request survives. Two cases still lose data:
- A response from the old provider can arrive after the switch. That response is then stored in the new provider's slot. The hook writes all four lists from any message, so this only matters when switching between two message-based providers that share a list. That is rare.
- Settings-page components post the same
requestOllamaModelsmessages. Responses to those requests also update this hook, which is harmless.This concern is minor. One fix lowers the race risk: store only the message types that match
activeProvider. To do that, read the current provider through a ref insideonMessage.webview-ui/src/components/chat/ChatModelSelector.tsx (1)
177-203: The empty-state message is missing when the search matches no models and the search box is empty.
modelListEmptyrenders only whenmodelIds.length === 0. When a search matches no models,filteredModelIdsis empty and the custom-model option appears, which is acceptable. WhenisLoadingis true and the list is empty, nothing renders below the search box. Combined with the permanent loading state on Lines 345-350 ofuseChatModelSelector.ts, the popover stays blank.Fix the root cause in the hook, as described in that comment.

Inline: trigger label no longer follows search text; disable + early-return when currentApiConfigName is unset; correlate message-based model responses with requestId; stop OpenAI-compatible permanent loading on empty/failed response. Security boundaries: validate selections against organizationAllowList in the webview and enforce ProfileValidator at the upsertApiConfiguration/saveApiConfiguration persistence boundary. Persistence integrity: snapshot and roll back provider settings, current profile name, and mode binding when upsertProviderProfile fails after mutation. Side effects: webviewMessageHandler now reads organizationAllowList via provider.getState() before profile writes; ClineProvider.upsertProviderProfile now calls getModeConfigId before activation and setModeConfig on rollback. Tests: ChatModelSelector/useChatModelSelector (47), webviewMessageHandler (84), ClineProvider.apiHandlerRebuild (16) and ClineProvider.spec (205) all pass; eslint + tsc clean. 174-181: Clear the Ollama, LM Studio, and VS Code LM lists when the request effect reruns.The changed effect clears only the OpenAI list. For other message-based providers, the effect reruns only when
activeProviderchanges. The provider-change effect at Lines 156-163 already clears those lists in that case. No concrete stale-state defect is visible for them.The OpenAI-specific reset at Lines 178-181 is consistent with the response-ID correlation in
onMessage(Lines 133-139). The reset runs beforelatestRequestId.currentis reassigned. A late response for the previous request is rejected byisStale(), because the new ID replaces it. Cleanup also sets the ID toundefined, so late responses are dropped.One edge remains. A response with no
requestIdis accepted at Line 133. If the backend ever sends a broadcastopenAiModelsmessage without an ID, it can repopulate the list after the reset. This path is permitted by design, as the comment at Lines 131-132 says. No change is required.

Preserve version in the VS Code LM allowlist key.
Restricted model lists require exact model-ID matches. ProfileValidator currently reduces a selector with version to vendor/family, so a persisted versioned selector can pass a family-only entry. VsCodeLmHandler passes the selector to vscode.lm.selectChatModels and identifies a client without id as vendor/family/version.
The normal selectors preserve family-only behavior, so include version only when it is present. Add both allow and deny assertions for versioned selectors.

postApiConfigurationpushes theapiConfigurationvalue from the current render. This is the same value that it posts, so the baseline matches the submitted payload. The backend merge can still keep concurrent edits that the webview never received. After a success, Line 168 sets the baseline to the submitted configuration and not to the merged result that the backend stored. The next save then diffs against a baseline that lacks those concurrent fields. A field that another writer changed and this view left untouched compares as equal, so the merge skips it. This keeps the other writer's value. The behavior is safe, and no change is needed.

Add coverage for the VS Code LM selection payload.
This test checks that the option is listed. It does not select it. The valueTransform path stores { vendor, family }. No test asserts this payload. A regression in the split logic would pass.
Select the option, then assert apiConfiguration.vsCodeLmModelSelector equals { vendor: "copilot", family: "gpt-4o" }.

TanStack Query v5 official docs query key query function changes staleTime default refetch on option change
💡 Result:
Here’s the v5 behavior in brief:
- **Query keys and query functions:** v5 uses the object form, e.g. `useQuery({ queryKey, queryFn })`. Include in `queryKey` any variable your query function depends on. When the key changes, it selects a separate cache entry and can fetch for it; whether it fetches depends on `enabled` and freshness. ([tanstack.com](https://tanstack.com/query/latest/docs/framework/react/guides/migrating-to-v5?utm_source=openai))
- **`staleTime` default:** `0`, so cached data is stale immediately. Stale queries may refetch on mount, window focus, or reconnect. Set `staleTime` to keep data fresh for longer. ([tanstack.com](https://tanstack.com/query/latest/docs/framework/react/guides/important-defaults?utm_source=openai))
- **Changing an option:** changing `staleTime` alone does **not** mean “refetch now.” It changes how freshness is evaluated; the docs describe automatic refetches at triggers such as mount, focus, and reconnect. A key change is different: it switches the query being observed, and the new query can fetch if enabled. ([tanstack.com](https://tanstack.com/query/latest/docs/framework/react/guides/important-defaults?utm_source=openai))
The cited pages are the current official v5 documentation; they don’t establish a rule that *every* option change triggers a refetch.

- **`queryKey`**: A top-level array that uniquely describes the fetched data. Include any changing variables used by the query function; changing the key can trigger a refetch. ([tanstack.com](https://tanstack.com/query/latest/docs/framework/react/guides/query-keys?utm_source=openai))
- **`queryFn`**: A function that returns a Promise resolving to data or rejecting/throwing an error. It can receive a context containing the query key. ([tanstack.com](https://tanstack.com/query/latest/docs/framework/react/guides/queries?utm_source=openai))
- **`enabled`**: `true` by default. Set it to `false` (or a boolean-returning function) to prevent automatic fetching; you can later enable it conditionally. ([tanstack.com](https://tanstack.com/query/latest/docs/framework/react/reference/interfaces/UseQueryOptions?utm_source=openai))
- **`staleTime`**: **0 ms by default**—data is considered stale immediately. Set a duration to keep it fresh for that period; `Infinity` and `'static'` are also supported, with different invalidation behavior. ([tanstack.com](https://tanstack.com/query/latest/docs/framework/react/guides/important-defaults?from=reactQueryV3&utm_source=openai))
```tsx
useQuery({
queryKey: ['todos', { status, page }],
queryFn: ({ queryKey }) => fetchTodos(queryKey[1]),
enabled: Boolean(status),
staleTime: 60_000,
})
```
This example is illustrative, not a documentation excerpt.

Use React Query’s enabled option for the VS Code LM query.
The current hook runs its query function when enabled is false and stores [] under the static key. The key does not include the changing enabled value, so React Query can reuse that empty result instead of starting a new request when the provider changes.
Suggested fix

useQuery({
queryKey: ["vsCodeLmModels"],

…seline for model selector The compact chat model picker added one more focusable trigger between the ApiConfigSelector and AutoApproveDropdown, which pushed the textarea just past the visual test's fixed 10-Tab loop. Widen to 15 iterations so the Tab-driven focus walk reliably lands on the editor before the focus screenshot is taken. Also refresh the electron extension-host sidebar baseline so it reflects the new model selector button in the chat composer.

53-53: 🎯 Functional CorrectnessUse the query’s
enabledoption instead of caching a disabled result.When
enabledis false, this query stores[]under the same key used for an enabled request. Changing only the capturedenabledvalue does not change that key. Useenabledas a query option so the false-to-true transition starts the model request. This concern was raised in a previous review. TanStack Query documents both conditional queries and query-key dependencies. (tanstack.com)

Correlate VS Code LM responses with their requests.
When the query is canceled and then remounted, the extension can reply to the old request after the new request starts. The new listener matches only the message type, so it can resolve with the old model list. Include and echo a request ID, then accept only the matching response.

… profiles - useVsCodeLmModels: wire React Query's AbortSignal through to the request helper so unmounting or switching away from the VS Code LM provider removes the window message listener and clears the 10s timeout instead of leaking them. - Add a focused useVsCodeLmModels spec covering the disabled path, matching response resolution, unrelated-message filtering, the missing-array fallback, and listener cleanup. - ChatModelSelector.persistModel: refuse to post upsertApiConfiguration when apiConfiguration.apiProvider is unset. The profile schema strips provider-specific fields from provider-less profiles, so writing openRouterModelId (the hook's default) would silently disappear on reload. - Refresh ChatModelSelector tests: assert the guard rejects writes for provider-less profiles, and verify the stored provider is preserved.

The settings popover no longer matches the trigger width.
ModelPicker now always passes renderTrigger. Because of that, Line 160 always applies w-[300px], and Line 164 always applies align="start" in Settings. The class w-[var(--radix-popover-trigger-width)] then has no effect for either caller. The comment on Lines 158-159 says Settings keeps the old layout, but no caller reaches that path. The result is a visible change: the settings model list is 300px wide instead of matching the full-width combobox.
Choose the compact layout with an explicit prop, not with the presence of renderTrigger.

- ModelSelect: remove popover width dead-code ternary; all callers pass renderTrigger so align/sideOffset/width are now constants. - ChatModelSelector: include !apiConfiguration?.apiProvider in isDisabled so the trigger no longer opens a picker whose selection would be silently discarded by persistSelection guard. - useVsCodeLmModels: document why no requestId correlation is needed (stable query key => at most one in-flight queryFn invocation). - useVsCodeLmModels.spec: assert removeEventListener receives the same handler reference that addEventListener registered, instead of expect.any(Function). - ChatModelSelector.spec: rename the provider-less case to assert the trigger is disabled and the popover cannot be opened.
…opover width
- useVsCodeLmModels: reject immediately if signal is already aborted before
registering message listener or starting the timer. Extract abort handler
into a named function registered with { once: true }, and remove it in
cleanup. finish() now only checks settled, leaving abort semantics to
the handler.
- useVsCodeLmModels.spec: add an abort-path test that cancels the query,
asserts the registered message handler is removed, and verifies a late
response does not populate result.current.data.
- ModelPicker: pass contentClassName w-[var(--radix-popover-trigger-width)]
so the settings popover follows its combobox trigger width while chat
keeps the 300px compact default. twMerge resolves the w-* conflict.
…, add useChatModelSelector hook spec - useVsCodeLmModels: export getVsCodeLmModels so tests can exercise the already-aborted signal branch directly without going through React Query. - useVsCodeLmModels.spec: add a timeout-path test using fake timers (advance 10s, assert listener removed and error state populated), and an already-aborted test that asserts no listener is registered, no timer starts, and no postMessage is sent. - useChatModelSelector.spec (new, 7 cases): cover router, ollama, lmstudio, vsCodeLm (with valueTransform/displayTransform round-trip and null boundary), static anthropic, default openrouter fallback, and retired provider handling.
…rt-circuit useChatModelSelector.spec: assert mockUseVsCodeLmModels is called with false for every non-vscodeLm branch (openrouter/ollama/lmstudio/anthropic/default-openrouter/retired) and true only for vscodeLm, so a future regression that opens the vscode-lm request on the wrong provider fails. useVsCodeLmModels.spec: timeout test now reuses the wrapper() helper instead of inlining a QueryClient/Provider pair. already-aborted test now spies on globalThis.setTimeout and AbortSignal.prototype.addEventListener to assert the early-return path never installs timers or abort listeners; all four spies restored in try/finally so they do not leak into sibling tests.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick winGate the query with TanStack Query's
enabledoption.For non-VS Code LM providers, the current query resolves
[]and stores it under the shared["vsCodeLmModels"]key. Switching providers only changes the value captured byqueryFn; it does not change the observer's enabled state. The selector can therefore keep exposing the cached empty model map until another refetch trigger occurs.Suggested fix
export const useVsCodeLmModels = (enabled: boolean) => useQuery({ queryKey: ["vsCodeLmModels"], - queryFn: ({ signal }) => (enabled ? getVsCodeLmModels(signal) : []), + queryFn: ({ signal }) => getVsCodeLmModels(signal), + enabled, })This prevents the disabled path from caching
[]and triggers a stale-query refetch when the observer changes from disabled to enabled. A failed refetch can still retain previously cached data, including a legitimate empty result; this fix targets the provider-switch cache pollution.🤖 Prompt for AI Agents

Description
Adds a searchable chat model selector to the chat input bar so users can switch the model for the active API profile without leaving the chat.
ChatModelSelectorpopover, mounted inChatTextAreanext to the API config selector.useChatModelSelectorhook resolves the provider's model list (static per-provider defaults, router catalog for OpenRouter/Requesty/etc., and custom models), filters deprecated models (keeping the currently selected one), supports search, and picks the matchingmodelIdKeyfor storage.upsertApiConfigurationfor the active profile; the backend persists it, activates it, and broadcasts the updatedapiConfigurationback to the webview.chat.*i18n keys across all 18 locales and a Playwright visual snapshot for the dark sidebar chat.Behavioral guarantees:
