What this fixes

The allowlist splitter cuts a command into sub-commands with a regex pipeline that cannot see nesting, so a substitution hidden inside a parameter expansion or truncated by nesting never gets matched against the lists and runs on the outer command's approval. #1947 has the two repro one-liners (echo ${x:-$(rm -rf ~/work)} and ls $(foo $(rm -rf /) bar), both auto_approve on main) and the root-cause walkthrough; this PR implements the fix that issue asks for.

What the PR does

  • Replaces the sequential regex pre-replacement pipeline in src/shared/parse-command.ts with one quote-aware, left-to-right scan that tracks quote state, delimiter depth, and heredoc state in a single pass. shell-quote still tokenizes the masked host text; every extracted substitution payload (nested, inside a ${...} expansion, inside a process substitution, or inside a heredoc with an unquoted delimiter) is re-scanned through the same path and becomes its own segment.
  • Extends fail-closed: when the scan opens a $(, ${, backtick, <(, or >( and cannot close it, leaves an arithmetic expression ($(( or $[) unclosed, sees a stray ) or } with no opener, a raw NUL byte, or substitution nesting beyond 64 levels, parseCommand returns a parse error and the decision is malformed_command (ask/deny). Unbalanced delimiters inside quoted regions stay parseable; a shell never parses them there.

Scope

  • Allow/deny matching semantics are unchanged. Extracted segments are judged by the existing rules; the commands.ts changes in this diff are comments only. This is a fix to where the string is cut, not to how a segment is matched.
  • Substitutions inside double-quoted regions stay opaque to the splitter. That opacity is pre-existing and this PR does not touch it (see follow-ups).
  • Heredoc bodies under an unquoted delimiter are scanned for substitutions (the shell expands them there); bodies under a quoted delimiter stay literal.

Tests

  • Targeted suites (src/core/auto-approval, src/shared/__tests__/parse-command.spec.ts): 15 files / 350 tests pass, exit 0, up from 300 on main: 50 new tests covering both repro cases, nested and process substitution, heredoc coverage, and each fail-closed trigger (unclosed $(/${/backtick/<(/>(/arithmetic, stray closer, NUL, depth 65).
  • Webview consumer: command-parser.spec.ts 32 pass (3 new pins for substitution, process substitution, and the fail-closed opaque case); CommandExecution.spec.tsx 38 pass as the regression floor on the command UI.
  • check-types: 0 errors. ESLint clean on all touched files. The shared/parse-command.ts suppression entry in src/eslint-suppressions.json is removed (its no-explicit-any count is gone with the rewrite).

Known limitations / follow-ups

  • Substitutions inside double-quoted regions are not extracted (echo "$(whoami)" stays one opaque segment). Pre-existing, unchanged here; candidate follow-up.
  • Splitting the remainder of a heredoc opener line (cat <<EOF && evil) is unchanged from main. Pre-existing; candidate follow-up.
  • A command word around 4 million characters overflows shell-quote's stack and reaches the crude-split fallback, which inlines substitutions instead of extracting them. A probe of that input behaves identically on main and on this branch, so it is recorded as pre-existing rather than touched here.

Closes #1947

The command splitter pre-replaced shell constructs with placeholder
tokens by regex before handing the string to shell-quote. Parameter
expansions were masked before substitution extraction, so the payload
of `echo ${x:-$(rm -rf ~/work)}` never became its own segment, and the
lazy substitution regex cut nested forms at the first close paren, so
`ls $(foo $(rm -rf /) bar)` produced three bogus fragments. In both
shapes the inner command rode the outer command's allowlist approval
(Zoo-Code-Org#1947).

Replace the sequential regex pipeline in parse-command.ts with one
quote-aware, left-to-right scan that tracks quote state, delimiter
depth, and heredoc state in a single pass. shell-quote still
tokenizes the masked host text. Every extracted substitution payload
is re-scanned through the same path, so nested, expansion-embedded,
process-substitution, and heredoc-embedded commands become independent
segments that each match the allow/deny lists under the existing
rules. A heredoc body under an unquoted delimiter is scanned, because
the shell expands substitutions there; a quoted-delimiter body stays
literal.

The scan also fails closed. An expansion or arithmetic delimiter that
was opened but never closed, a stray close delimiter with no opener,
a raw NUL byte, or substitution nesting beyond 64 levels now yields a
parse error, and the decision becomes malformed_command (ask/deny)
instead of an approval resting on a partial decomposition. Unbalanced
delimiters inside quoted regions stay parseable: a shell never parses
them there.

Allow/deny matching semantics are untouched; commands.ts gains
comment updates only. Substitutions inside double-quoted regions
remain opaque to the splitter, as before.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Improved shell command parsing for nested substitutions, heredocs, and other complex command structures, helping ensure embedded commands are included in approval checks.
    • Malformed or unaccountable command syntax, including NUL bytes and excessive nesting, now fails closed and requires approval rather than being treated as safe.
    • Unbalanced delimiters inside quoted regions no longer prevent automatic approval.

The shared command parser now scans shell syntax and extracts commands from supported substitutions. It returns malformed input as one opaque command with a parse error. Auto-approval uses this result to identify malformed commands.

Changes: Shell command parsing and approval

Layer / File(s) Summary
Track shell structure and malformed input
src/shared/parse-command.ts
The scanner tracks quotes, expansions, arithmetic, heredocs, and delimiters. It detects structural errors such as unclosed expansions, stray closers, raw NUL bytes, and nesting beyond the depth limit.
Parse host commands and substitution payloads
src/shared/parse-command.ts, src/shared/__tests__/parse-command.spec.ts, webview-ui/src/utils/__tests__/command-parser.spec.ts, src/eslint-suppressions.json
parseCommand tokenizes masked host text and recursively extracts substitution payloads. Malformed input returns as one opaque command with an error. Tests cover substitutions, heredocs, malformed structures, and quoted regions. The parser’s explicit-any lint suppression was removed.
Apply parser results to auto-approval decisions
src/core/auto-approval/commands.ts, src/core/auto-approval/__tests__/commands.spec.ts
The documentation describes structural parse failures handled as malformed_command. Tests cover embedded commands, malformed inputs, and detailed errors for an unclosed substitution.

The new command parser can hide a dangerous command behind an empty or unclosed quoted heredoc delimiter. With only cat allowed, a command such as rm -rf / can be auto-approved without its own allowlist match. This undermines the protection the change is meant to add. Valid commands that group a subshell inside a substitution are also wrongly rejected as malformed. Fix these issues before merging.

Handle empty heredoc delimiters before masking to end of input.

<<'' produces an empty delimiter, so the first blank line terminates the heredoc. This branch instead masks through end of input. For cat <<''\nbody\n\nrm -rf /, parseCommand returns one cat segment and an allowlist containing cat can auto-approve the later rm -rf /. Parse the empty-line terminator or return a heredoc parse error. Add a regression test for a command after that terminator. Bash applies quote removal to the delimiter word, including quoted empty words. (gnu.org)

Track grouping parentheses inside substitution frames.

Inside $( (echo safe) ), the first ) closes the command-substitution frame because the scanner does not track the inner bare (. The final ) then becomes a stray closer. parseCommand returns malformed_command for valid shell input and blocks normal allowlist approval. Track bare-parenthesis depth per command/process-substitution frame and add this regression case.

Reject an unclosed quote in a heredoc delimiter before approval.

parseHeredocDelimiter stops at CR and accepts the missing closing quote. For cat <<'X\r\n'; rm -rf /\nX\r\n, the parser marks the heredoc as quoted, keeps '; rm -rf / in the body, and emits no separate rm command. getCommandDecision(..., ["cat"]) can therefore auto-approve it.

Bash treats CR and LF as ordinary characters inside a single-quoted word. The quote on the next line closes the delimiter, and ; rm -rf / is an executable command separator. Return a delimiter parse error when the closing quote is absent, and update the expectations in src/shared/__tests__/parse-command.spec.ts.

[BUG] Command substitutions inside parameter expansions bypass the allowlist
