Lowers the minimum PHP version of ably/pubsub-server from ^8.1 to ^7.4 || ^8.0, and adds PHP 7.4 to the CI matrix. No SDK code changes: the code already runs on 7.4.
Why
The 8.1 floor was a policy choice, not a code need. 2.0 raised it in a composer.json-only change, because 7.2–8.0 are end-of-life upstream and Laravel 10+ needs 8.1. A parser-based scan of src/ and tests/ finds no syntax or functions newer than PHP 7.4.
There is a small but real 7.x tail. Packagist install stats for ably/ably-php (October 2026 monthly average): 0.5% on PHP below 8.0, 0.2% on 8.0, and 99.3% on 8.1 or later. PHP 7.4 accounts for most of the 7.x share (0.4%).
Peer server SDKs still support 7.3 or 7.4. Latest stable releases on Packagist:

The change is non-breaking. Widening the constraint only adds installable platforms; everyone on 8.1 or later resolves exactly as before. It ships in a later 2.x release.
Laravel users are unaffected.ably/laravel-broadcaster depends on ably/ably-php^1.1, not on this package.
What changed
composer.json: php is now ^7.4 || ^8.0. rybakit/msgpack (^0.9.1 || ^1.0, which resolves to 0.9.x on 7.4) and phpunit/phpunit (^9.5, which supports 7.3 and later) are unchanged.
.github/workflows/check.yml: adds 7.4 to the php-version matrix, giving 7.4 and 8.1–8.5. PHP 8.0 is allowed by the constraint but is not run in CI.
tests/factories/TestApp.php: comment only. It no longer says the floor is 8.1, and it explains why unset($ch) is enough on every supported version.
UPDATING.md: the mapping-table row and the "Removed in 2.0.0" bullet now say that 2.x needs PHP 7.4 or later, that only 7.2 and 7.3 stay dropped, and that 2.0.0 itself required 8.1.
README.md: one-line update to the Supported platforms row, which now reads "7.4 and later (tested on 7.4 and 8.1 – 8.5)". The README rewrite in Rewrite the README for the 2.0 SDK #232 removes this table, so the edit is kept to that single line.
How it was validated
Static scan. A php-parser AST walk of every PHP file in src/ and tests/ found nothing that needs PHP 8.0 or later. The only hits are the three #[\AllowDynamicProperties] attributes, which PHP 7.x reads as comments. src/Utils/CurlWrapper.php already has a PHP_VERSION_ID < 80000 branch for curl_close.
Config checks.composer.json parses as JSON with the expected constraints; composer validate --strict runs in CI. The workflow YAML parses, and nothing else in it assumes 8.1 or later (setup-php inputs, composer flags, ini-values). features.yml needs no change.
CI. The test suite runs on PHP 7.4 and 8.1–8.5, each against both the JSON and msgpack protocols. This is the runtime proof on 7.4.
The release PR should add a CHANGELOG entry for the widened PHP range. The CHANGELOG is written at release time, so this PR leaves it alone.
Investigate (int) $handle in src/Utils/CurlWrapper.php. On PHP 8, curl handles are CurlHandle objects and can't be cast to int. This is pre-existing behaviour and is not changed here.

New Features
Compatibility now includes PHP 7.4 and PHP 8.x. Automated tests cover PHP 7.4 and PHP 8.1–8.5.
Documentation
Updated platform support information and migration guidance. The guide clarifies that releases after 2.0.0 support PHP 7.4 and later, while PHP 7.2 and 7.3 remain unsupported. It also notes that version 2.0.0 required PHP 8.1.
The Composer PHP requirement now includes PHP 7.4. The CI matrix adds PHP 7.4, and the README and migration guide describe support for PHP 7.4 and later. A test-factory comment also updates its description of cURL handle release.

Summary
PHP support requirement and validation composer.json, .github/workflows/check.yml, README.md, UPDATING.md, tests/factories/TestApp.php
Composer permits PHP 7.4 and PHP 8.x under the stated constraints. CI tests PHP 7.4 alongside PHP 8.1–8.5. The README and migration guide describe the supported versions; the test-factory comment updates its cURL handle release description.
Adding PHP 8.0 to CI would validate the support version already advertised to users.

A rabbit checks the version chart, PHP seven-four joins the start. The test matrix adds its name, The docs and Composer match the claim. One cURL note completes the tale.

composer.json supports PHP 8.0, but the matrix jumps from PHP 7.4 to PHP 8.1. The test workflow therefore does not validate the declared PHP 8.0 support. Add PHP 8.0 to this matrix.
