fix: await cancelled transport tasks in dispose - #720
WebSocketTransport.dispose() cancelled the read loop and connect task, then cleaned them up in a detached task. If the event loop closed before that task ran, the cancelled Connection.recv coroutine was never finalized. Garbage collection then raised RuntimeError: Event loop is closed.
Changes
ably/transport/websockettransport.py: dispose() awaits the cancelled tasks before it returns. When dispose() runs inside one of those tasks, it keeps the detached cleanup to avoid a deadlock. _cleanup_tasks uses asyncio.gather(..., return_exceptions=True). This also collects CancelledError, which is not an Exception subclass on Python 3.8 and later.
test/unit/websockettransport_test.py: add a test that the read loop is done when dispose() returns, and a test that calling dispose() from the read loop does not deadlock.
Testing
pytest test/unit: 91 passed.
The first new test fails without the source change and passes with it. The second test guards the re-entrant path and passes both ways.
ruff check ably test/unit: clean.
The realtime integration tests need the Ably sandbox and were not run.
Summary by CodeRabbit
Bug Fixes
WebSocket connections now shut down more reliably when disposed. Cleanup waits for active connection work to finish when appropriate, while avoiding delays when disposal is triggered from within the read loop. This helps prevent shutdown from hanging and ensures active reads are cancelled before disposal completes.
WebSocketTransport.dispose() now waits for cancelled task cleanup when called outside those tasks. Calls from a task being cancelled schedule cleanup in the background. New tests cover both disposal paths.

Summary
Disposal and task cleanup ably/pubsub/transport/websockettransport.py, test/unit/websockettransport_test.py
dispose() awaits cleanup when called outside the tasks it cancels and schedules cleanup when called from one of those tasks. _cleanup_tasks() gathers task results while ignoring exceptions. Tests verify cancellation and completion in both cases.
Disposal now waits for cancelled tasks while avoiding self-await deadlocks. The change is mergeable with a bounded follow-up to test connect-task completion.

Explanation
The title "fix: await cancelled transport tasks in dispose" matches the main change. WebSocketTransport.dispose() now awaits cancelled read-loop and connection tasks, and _cleanup_tasks() collects their outcomes. The title is specific and follows a conventional commit style. It does not cover the re-entrant detached-cleanup path or the new tests, which is acceptable for a short title.

Explanation
Issue #712 requires that WebSocketTransport.dispose() await cancelled read-loop and connect tasks when it is not called from one of them. It keeps detached cleanup only for re-entrant calls. It also requires that a normal close() leave no unfinalized coroutines.
At head, ably/pubsub/transport/websockettransport.py (not ably/transport/..., which the PR description cites and which does not exist at head) changes dispose() as follows. If asyncio.current_task() is in tasks_to_await, it calls asyncio.create_task(self._cleanup_tasks(...)). Otherwise it runs await self._cleanup_tasks(tasks_to_await). _cleanup_tasks now runs await asyncio.gather(*tasks, return_exceptions=True). Awaiting the cancelled read_loop lets CancelledError propagate into the Connection.recv await chain, so that coroutine finishes before dispose() returns. The re-entrant branch still avoids self-await deadlock.
Tests at head in test/unit/websockettransport_test.py cover both requirements. test_dispose_finishes_cancelled_tasks_before_returning asserts read_loop.cancelled() after dispose(). test_dispose_called_from_the_read_loop_does_not_deadlock runs dispose() from the read loop and asserts completion within 1 second. The test-file diff was unavailable, so I could not confirm from the diff which hunks this PR added. The tests exist at head and match the PR description.
The issue has no non-coding requirements. The realtime integration tests were not run, but the issue does not require them for this verdict.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The source diff for ably/pubsub/transport/websockettransport.py touches only dispose() and _cleanup_tasks(). Both changes implement the #712 requirement directly. The _cleanup_tasks change also replaces the per-task except Exception loop with gather(..., return_exceptions=True), which is needed because CancelledError is not an Exception subclass on Python 3.8 and later. The test additions verify the same behavior. No unrelated source or test changes were found in the reviewed diff. The only inconsistency is the documentation path in the PR description (ably/transport/... instead of ably/pubsub/transport/...). It does not affect scope.

A rabbit watched the socket close, While cancelled tasks came to a pose. It waited when it safely could, And sent cleanup off when it should. Then hopped away as tests all rose.

Add a test that covers the ws_connect_task await in dispose().
Neither new test sets ws_connect_task, so the branch in dispose() that adds it to tasks_to_await never runs under them. Removing that branch would still pass both tests. The read-loop assertions do not detect this change. Add a test that assigns a cancellable task to transport.ws_connect_task, calls dispose(), and asserts that the task is cancelled when dispose() returns.

Review comment at @ably/pubsub/transport/websockettransport.py at line 278:
Add a test for the `dispose()` path that includes `ws_connect_task` in
`tasks_to_await`: assign a cancellable task to `transport.ws_connect_task`, call
`dispose()`, and assert the task is cancelled when `dispose()` returns. Ensure
the test would fail if `dispose()` stopped awaiting `ws_connect_task`.
