I liked how clean the old site was, but it didn't really feel like me. My pixel sprite had more personality than the rest of the website. I'm a game developer and a software engineer, and I wanted more of that to come through.

The idea was to keep it compact and cozy, with a little more room to play. The terminal app felt like a good fit: the sprite belongs there, the prompt does useful things, and the themes still make it feel like my garden.

  • Made the terminal the only layout, including the actual blog posts and snippets. Removed the old layout code.
  • Kept all 12 themes and gave the sections proper URLs like /blog, /snippets, and /config.
  • Made the prompt useful for searching, finding words in a post, printing, and moving around. The like button stays within reach while reading, and each new post starts at the top.
  • Simplified mobile to three main tabs and a More menu. The window fills the screen, with scrolling inside it.
  • Kept all 14 pages prerendered as static HTML. Likes still work dynamically, and opening a page doesn't need a server render or another build.
  • Cleaned out unused code and docs, and shortened the README so someone can fork the site and get started.
  • Added TanStack Redact through the Vite plugin to bring down the browser JavaScript without rewriting the app's React imports. Across all emitted client JavaScript chunks, the gzipped total went from 240.3 KB to 204.1 KB, saving 36.2 KB, about 15%. Before gzip, it went from 935.5 KB to 773.9 KB, about 17% smaller. These are totals for the whole build, not what every page downloads.
  • Rechecked the Redact build with vp check, production prerendering, desktop and mobile hydration, navigation, find, print, galleries, and likes after reload. All 14 pages still work as static HTML with JavaScript disabled.

I also wanted to make sure the new look held up beyond the screenshots:

  • Lighthouse scored 100 in Performance, Accessibility, Best Practices, and SEO across 20 local mobile and desktop runs. The article recheck after the hydration fix scored 100 across the board too.
  • 120 page/theme accessibility scans found no automated violations. The lowest sampled text contrast was 4.92:1.
  • Type checking and production builds passed. I checked keyboard navigation, mobile sizing, find, print, galleries, likes after reload, and static pages with JavaScript disabled.

Those are local lab results. Physical-device and screen-reader testing still need a separate pass.
