Port of #1048 from release/3.x. Dropped the API < 23 KeyPairGeneratorSpec
branch (not present on main) and migrated the new test from PowerMockito
to Mockito.

(cherry picked from commit fcb50ee)

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Fixed RSA decryption compatibility on Android 15 and later, reducing failures when opening protected data.
    • Improved recovery when encryption keys cannot be used: affected keys are cleared, and the operation reports that it can be retried with regenerated keys.
    • These changes help authentication recover from incompatible key states rather than treating them as device-level algorithm or padding failures.

📝 Walkthrough

RSA key generation now authorizes MGF1 digests on API 35 and later. Decryption handles key-initialization errors by deleting RSA and AES keys and throwing a retry-oriented CryptoException. Tests cover both error types and key cleanup.

Changes: RSA key handling

Layer / File(s) Summary
MGF1 digest authorization
auth0/src/main/java/com/auth0/android/authentication/storage/CryptoUtil.java, CHANGELOG.md
RSA key generation authorizes SHA-1 and SHA-256 as MGF1 digests on API 35 and later. The changelog records the fix in release 3.21.1 and prerelease 3.21.1-beta.0.
Decryption key recovery
auth0/src/main/java/com/auth0/android/authentication/storage/CryptoUtil.java, auth0/src/test/java/com/auth0/android/authentication/storage/CryptoUtilTest.java
RSADecrypt deletes RSA and AES keys after InvalidKeyException or InvalidAlgorithmParameterException, then throws CryptoException. Tests verify the retry message and key cleanup.

Before / after behavior

  • observed — Modified behavior in auth0/src/main/java/com/auth0/android/authentication/storage/CryptoUtil.java: getRSAKeyEntry now configures the RSA key specification through a builder and applies it after conditionally setting MGF1 digests. On API 35 and later it authorizes SHA-1 and SHA-256; on older API levels it leaves MGF1 digest authorization unset, as before.
  • observed — Modified behavior in auth0/src/main/java/com/auth0/android/authentication/storage/CryptoUtil.java: RSADecrypt removes InvalidKeyException and InvalidAlgorithmParameterException from the catch that reports device incompatibility. It now handles them by deleting both RSA and AES keys and throwing CryptoException, rather than IncompatibleDeviceException.
  • observed — Modified behavior in auth0/src/test/java/com/auth0/android/authentication/storage/CryptoUtilTest.java: The RSA decryption invalid-key test now expects a CryptoException stating that incompatible authorized parameters caused key recreation and that the operation should be retried, replacing the former expectation of an IncompatibleDeviceException.
  • observed — Modified behavior in auth0/src/test/java/com/auth0/android/authentication/storage/CryptoUtilTest.java: The invalid-key test now verifies deletion of both RSA aliases and removal of both aliases’ stored AES keys and IVs. A new invalid-algorithm-parameter test expects the same retry-oriented CryptoException, exercises a decryption cipher-init failure, and verifies deletion of both RSA aliases and removal of the stored AES keys.

Cover the API 35 MGF1 authorization branch.

The default Robolectric SDK is 29, and the existing key-generation tests use SDK 29 or 28. Run the existing test at SDK 35 and assert that getMgf1Digests() contains SHA-1 and SHA-256. Robolectric 4.15.1 supports API 35 and the required KeyGenParameterSpec methods.

Preserve the RSA key until legacy migration fails.

On API 26–30, an existing PKCS#1 RSA key can make OAEP initialization throw InvalidKeyException. RSADecrypt deletes that key before tryRecoverCurrentAESKey() attempts PKCS#1 migration. The migration then cannot recover the AES key, and credential callers clear the otherwise recoverable credentials after the resulting decryption failure.

Remove the early deletion. The existing cleanup after attemptPKCS1Migration(...) returns null still handles unrecoverable keys.

Add an API-35 regression test for the MGF1 authorization.

The RSA key-generation tests run with the default API 29 or explicit API 28. None enters the Build.VERSION.SDK_INT >= 35 branch. Add an API-35 test that asserts getMgf1Digests() contains SHA-1 and SHA-256.
