fix(daemon): read the kubo config from the repo kubo actually runs in - #201
.bitsocial-cli.ipfs is the correct name: it is where kubo runs. The split predates the rebrand (.ipfs-plebbit-cli vs .plebbit-cli.ipfs), no data migration was meant to cover it, and nothing creates the .ipfs-* directory.
The fix makes the multiaddr parsers reachable in production for the first time, so they had to handle every shape kubo accepts:
/ip6/... built an invalid URL (http://::1:5001); the host is now bracketed.
Addresses.API and Addresses.Gateway can be lists; the first usable entry wins.
Empty values and /unix sockets fall back to env/defaults instead of crashing the daemon.
The daemon help text and README now name the right directory.
Fixed from review
Adopting a running kubo on KUBO_RPC_URL failed since 265991d. The health probe built new URL("version", ".../api/v0"), which is /api/version, so kubo answered 404 and the daemon refused to start with "port ... is already in use". The probe now hits /api/v0/version. Found by the reworked test below; the env-override precedence Codex asked for is only meaningful for an external kubo, and that path never worked.
A wildcard Addresses.API / Addresses.Gateway reached pkc-js and the GC scheduler as http://0.0.0.0:<port>. Linux dials that as loopback, macOS refuses it. The parsers now map wildcard hosts to loopback, so every URL derived from the config is dialable.
Env override vs. config mismatch. For a locally managed kubo the daemon never rewrites Addresses.* of an existing repo, so an env var naming other ports leaves kubo on one port and the daemon dialling another, silently. The daemon now prints one warning naming the env URL, the config path and the Addresses.* value as written. It judges against every bound listener: a wildcard bind is reachable on any host, every entry of a list counts, and localhost matches either loopback literal. 127.0.0.1 vs ::1 still warns, since a kubo bound on one refuses the other, and so does an https:// override, since kubo serves plain http. A DNS name other than localhost is not judged. Failing fast is daemon: fail fast when env overrides disagree with the kubo config of a locally managed kubo #214.
IPv6 brackets in the port check and env-over-config precedence were fixed in 379ee1b (threads resolved).
Evidence
Before: with Addresses.API on a non-default port, the daemon printed Kubo IPFS API listening on the default port while kubo was bound to the configured one. After:test/cli/daemon-honours-kubo-config-addresses.test.ts and test/kubo/kubo-repo-path.test.ts pass. npm run test:cli passes locally.
The daemon test no longer trusts the printed URL, which was green even when the daemon could not reach kubo. Each case creates a community through the daemon and checks which kubo received its IPNS key (key/list):
config on non-default ports, no env -> key lands in the kubo from the config
KUBO_RPC_URL names a second, real kubo -> key lands in that kubo; the config kubo is never started
config binds 0.0.0.0 (macOS only) -> community create works through loopback
env names ports the config lacks -> one warning per field, naming both URLs and the config path
Parser tests pin /ip4/0.0.0.0 and /ip6/:: to loopback URLs on every OS.
Merge Danger
Door: two-way
Blast Radius: daemon-startup
Without KUBO_RPC_URL / IPFS_GATEWAY_URL set, the kubo config now beats the built-in defaults. A repo with non-default addresses was already broken, because kubo listened on the config port while the daemon dialled the default.
An explicit env var or --pkcOptions flag still wins, so pointing the daemon at an external kubo keeps working.
toConnectableHostname now maps wildcard binds to loopback on every OS, not only macOS, and the URLs built from the kubo config go through it. Kubo IPFS API listening on therefore prints 127.0.0.1 for a config bound on 0.0.0.0.
A daemon whose KUBO_RPC_URL port is already served by a healthy kubo now adopts it instead of failing to start. That was the documented behaviour; it had been broken since 2025-10.
loadKuboConfigFile looked in .ipfs-bitsocial-cli while kubo runs in
.bitsocial-cli.ipfs or $IPFS_PATH, so the read always came back empty and the
daemon fell back to env vars and defaults. Both now use resolveKuboRepoPath.
That makes the multiaddr parsers reachable for the first time, so they now
handle IPv6 hosts, list-valued addresses and unix sockets.
Kubo startup and config loading now use the same repository path. The daemon selects RPC and gateway endpoints from Kubo configuration or environment overrides, reports endpoint mismatches, and handles IPv6 and wildcard hosts in connection URLs.
Changes: Kubo daemon configuration

Summary
Resolve the Kubo repository and connection hosts src/util.ts, src/ipfs/startIpfs.ts, README.md, src/cli/commands/daemon.ts, test/kubo/kubo-repo-path.test.ts
A shared resolver selects $IPFS_PATH when set or .bitsocial-cli.ipfs under the data path otherwise. Kubo startup and config loading use this path. URL helpers normalize wildcard hosts and format IPv6 addresses. The README and daemon guidance name the resolved config path. Tests cover repository resolution and host conversion.
Select and check daemon endpoints src/util.ts, src/cli/commands/daemon.ts, test/kubo/kubo-repo-path.test.ts
The daemon uses configured RPC and gateway addresses unless the corresponding environment variable selects the default endpoint. It reports mismatches between environment-selected endpoints and configured listeners. The occupied-port health check appends /version to the configured path. Tests cover parsing and mismatch comparisons.

An incorrectly configured HTTPS override may prevent daemon startup or connection while hiding the useful endpoint-mismatch warning. The fix is localized, so the remaining risk is bounded.

The title "fix(daemon): read the kubo config from the repo kubo actually runs in" names the primary change. The daemon now loads Kubo's config from the repository path Kubo runs in, using a shared resolver that honors IPFS_PATH. The changeset matches this: resolveKuboRepoPath in src/util.ts, the daemon.ts endpoint selection, startIpfs.ts using the shared resolver, and the regression tests for configured Kubo addresses. The title is specific and short, and it states the main fix from the developer's view.
Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
Issue #200 is the only directly linked active issue. Its coding requirements are met at the reviewed head.
(1) Path resolution: resolveKuboRepoPath in src/util.ts returns IPFS_PATH when set, otherwise <dataPath>/.bitsocial-cli.ipfs. loadKuboConfigFile and startKuboNode in src/ipfs/startIpfs.ts both use it. The loader no longer reads the nonexistent .ipfs-bitsocial-cli directory.
(2) Configured endpoints: kuboRpcUrlFromKuboConfig and ipfsGatewayUrlFromKuboConfig derive API and Gateway URLs from Addresses.API and Addresses.Gateway. The daemon uses these when no explicit flag or env override is set. The parsers handle IPv6 brackets, address lists (first usable entry), empty values, and /unix sockets.
(3) Help text and docs: the daemon description in src/cli/commands/daemon.ts and README.md name .bitsocial-cli.ipfs/config (or $IPFS_PATH/config).
(4) Regression test: test/cli/daemon-honours-kubo-config-addresses.test.ts starts a daemon with a non-default configured API port. It checks which kubo receives the community IPNS key (key/list), not only the printed URL. test/kubo/kubo-repo-path.test.ts covers path resolution and parser behaviour.
(5) Investigation items: the PR reports that no data migration was meant to cover the old name. The Dockerfile at head does not hard-code either directory name. The Docker ENV sets KUBO_RPC_URL and IPFS_GATEWAY_URL, so config edits inside a container have no effect. The PR defers this to #215, which the issue does not require.
Changes since the previous review (wildcard-to-loopback mapping, mismatch warning, health-check URL fix) do not remove any requirement coverage. The previous PASS conclusion remains supported.
Not verified: the test suite results. The PR reports them, and this review did not run them.

Explanation
All changed areas trace to issue #200's endpoint-selection and repo-path requirements.
src/util.ts shared helpers (resolveKuboRepoPath, endpoint-from-config helpers, toConnectableHostname, hostForUrl, describeKuboEndpointMismatch): needed so the daemon uses configured Addresses.API and Addresses.Gateway correctly. This includes IPv6 bracketing and wildcard binds, which the config-driven path now reaches in production.
src/ipfs/startIpfs.ts: uses the shared resolver and toConnectableHostname for port checks. This keeps the spawner and loader on one path.
src/cli/commands/daemon.ts: endpoint precedence (flag, explicit env, kubo config, default) and the help text. The /api/v0/version health-check correction affects adoption of a kubo selected by KUBO_RPC_URL. This is the same endpoint-selection path #200 targets. It is a related fix, not a separate feature.
Mismatch warning: prints one warning when env-selected URLs differ from a locally managed kubo's configured addresses. This addresses the silent divergence described in #200's Effect section. Failing fast is deferred to #214.
Tests: test/cli/daemon-honours-kubo-config-addresses.test.ts and test/kubo/kubo-repo-path.test.ts cover the issue's regression requirement and the new helpers.
README.md: names the corrected directory, as #200 requires.
No change was found that is unrelated to #200. The wildcard mapping now applies on all OS, which changes the printed Kubo IPFS API listening on host. This follows directly from using config-derived URLs, and the PR documents it.

The readiness message does not prove that the daemon used the configured Kubo API. Replace the direct fetch with a daemon-mediated operation that requires Kubo, and assert its result while the environment API port remains unused. This makes the test fail if the daemon logs the configured URL but uses another endpoint or never uses Kubo.

Review comment at @test/cli/daemon-honours-kubo-config-addresses.test.ts around
lines 36 - 57:
Update the daemon test after readiness to perform an existing daemon-mediated
operation that requires Kubo and assert its result; the current readiness and
printedOptions checks only verify startup output. Ensure the operation succeeds
through the configured Kubo API while the environment API port remains unused,
reusing existing test helpers and avoiding assumptions about an unavailable
direct-fetch path.
An explicit KUBO_RPC_URL or IPFS_GATEWAY_URL can name a kubo other than the one in
this repo, so it still wins over the kubo config. Connectivity checks now strip the
brackets a URL keeps around an IPv6 host.
`new URL("version", ".../api/v0")` resolves to /api/version, which kubo
answers 404, so a kubo already listening on KUBO_RPC_URL looked like a
foreign listener and the daemon refused to start with "port ... is already
in use" (since 265991d).
The daemon test no longer trusts the printed URL: each case creates a
community through the daemon and checks which kubo received its IPNS key.
The env-override case runs a real second kubo on the env port, which is
what exposed the probe.
A kubo config with Addresses.API on 0.0.0.0 or :: gave pkc-js and the GC
scheduler http://0.0.0.0:<port>/api/v0. Linux connects that as loopback;
macOS refuses it, which 4652547 only covered for the daemon's own checks.
The multiaddr parsers now map a wildcard host to loopback, so every URL
derived from the config is dialable.
Parser tests cover the mapping on every OS. A macOS-only daemon test
creates a community through a kubo bound on the wildcard.
For a locally managed kubo the daemon never rewrites Addresses.* of an
existing repo, so KUBO_RPC_URL or IPFS_GATEWAY_URL naming other ports than
the config leaves kubo on one port and the daemon dialling another, with
nothing said. The daemon now prints one warning naming both URLs and the
config path before it starts kubo. Failing fast is tracked separately.
…match warning
describeKuboEndpointMismatch compared hostnames as plain strings after the
wildcard mapping, so KUBO_RPC_URL=http://localhost:50019/api/v0 against an
Addresses.API of /ip4/127.0.0.1/tcp/50019 warned "it will not reach kubo" on
every start, although localhost reaches that kubo.
localhost now matches either loopback literal (and, through the wildcard
mapping, a wildcard bind). 127.0.0.1 and ::1 stay distinct: a kubo bound on
one refuses a dial to the other, so that mismatch still warns.
The mismatch warning compared only port and host, so
KUBO_RPC_URL=https://localhost:5001/api/v0 against an Addresses.API on
127.0.0.1:5001 printed nothing although kubo serves its RPC and gateway
over plain http and the TLS handshake fails. The protocols now have to
match as well.
The warning compared the env override against one URL already rewritten
for dialling, so it could not tell a wildcard bind from loopback and saw
only the first entry of a list-valued Addresses.API / Addresses.Gateway.
A kubo bound on 0.0.0.0 with KUBO_RPC_URL naming a LAN address, or a
two-entry list with the override on the second entry, warned "will not
reach kubo" on every start although kubo was reachable.
describeKuboEndpointMismatch now takes the raw Addresses.* value, parses
every usable entry with the host as bound, treats a wildcard bind as
reachable on any host with that port, and prints the config value the
operator edits. A DNS name other than localhost cannot be judged without
a lookup, so it no longer warns. Wildcard-to-loopback mapping stays in
the parsers for the URLs the daemon dials.
