Closes #222

Summary

status / daemon start, when setup has not run
- warn "Browsers cannot reach this node"
+ addresses = public WSS addresses kubo announces (/tls/ws, /wss, /tls/sni/<name>/ws)
+ kubo down -> list addresses from its config as unverified
+ none -> warn "Browsers cannot reach this node"
+ any handshake ok -> report the address and that setup does not manage it
+ handshake fails, IP on this machine -> failed: warn "cannot reach" if nothing else may work, naming each address and why
+ handshake fails, IP elsewhere -> unconfirmed: warn without "cannot reach", as a router may not loop it back

The daemon runs this in the background and retries for about 2 minutes, because kubo may still be starting. It warns immediately only when there is no WSS address.

Check, with a verified WSS address Before After
tcp-443 on the address's port fail ok
udp-443, port held or not permitted fail follows AutoNAT for WebTransport on kubo's other UDP port: ok, otherwise warn

Also:

  • inbound: shows AutoNAT's per-address results when kubo has any, on every status run.
  • --json: adds unmanagedAddresses and a browser-address check. configured still only means setup has run.
  • bin/run: no longer passes the command's result to flush as its timeout (separate commit).

This differs from the issue: a successful handshake does not print "browsers can reach this node". A connection to a machine's own address goes through lo, past any provider firewall, so the message says what was tested. AutoNAT can't fill the gap: in testing it listed kubo's own listeners, including AutoTLS, but not an address that was only announced. Proving a proxied address from outside would need a prober on another network.

Evidence

Real kubo and an operator-owned Caddy with a Pebble certificate, kubo edited by hand and setup never run (reachability-existing-caddy.integration.test.ts):

  • Before: all 3 tests fail. unmanagedAddresses does not exist, and tcp-443 is fail.
After: all 3 pass. A real handshake reports ok with no "cannot reach", tcp-443 is ok, and stopping Caddy gives failed with the address named.

flush (bin-run-flush.test.ts, which records the timeout value, so it works on Node versions that print no warning):

  • Before: setTimeout receives a non-numeric delay.
After: it receives flush's default of 10000.

npm run test:cli: 1026 passed, 2 skipped.

Not verified:

  • A connection from another network, or a real domain. The integration test dials 127.0.0.1 through a test hook.
  • A real router without NAT hairpin. unconfirmed is tested with a dial to 127.0.0.2, which is off the machine's interfaces and refuses the connection.
  • An AutoTLS handshake. Only address matching is tested, and a wildcard *.libp2p.direct address is skipped because it can't be dialed.
  • The daemon's retry on a real node. It has unit tests with fake dials.
  • Node 24 after the fix, where the warning itself appears.

Merge Danger

Door: two-way

Revert restores the old messages. Nothing here writes to kubo's config or to reachability state.

Blast Radius: moderate

  • False reassurance: a node blocked by a provider firewall can now lose the "cannot reach" warning, because the handshake passes locally. inbound still says the proxied address is unproven.
  • Weaker warning: a really broken address whose IP is not on the machine's interfaces (behind NAT, 1:1 NAT cloud hosts, or a name behind a CDN) now gets warn and unconfirmed, not fail and "cannot reach".
  • Slower commands: status can take up to about 10 s longer when a dial fails, and it loads libp2p only when there is an address to dial.
  • Daemon: a node with an address to verify loads libp2p and dials at start. This does not delay startup, and stop() cancels it.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • reachability status now checks browser access to WSS addresses even when they weren’t configured through setup, and reports handshake outcomes.
    • Reachability results include AutoNAT inbound status and clarify TCP/UDP 443 results when WSS is verified.
    • The daemon checks unmanaged browser addresses, retries temporary failures, and reports results without blocking startup.
  • Documentation

    • Clarified which WSS addresses are checked, what local handshakes can establish, and how to interpret reachability results.

bin/run passed the command's result to oclif's flush as its timeout, so the
10 s wait for stdout became 1 ms. Node 24 prints TimeoutNaNWarning for it, and
on a stalled stdout pipe flush can reject with "timed out".
status and the daemon said browsers cannot reach a node whenever config.json
was missing, even when kubo announced a working reverse-proxied or AutoTLS
address. They now try a real libp2p handshake with each public WSS address kubo
announces, and only say that when no such address exists or every handshake
fails. With kubo down, addresses in its config are reported as unverified.

The handshake runs from the node itself, which does not prove other networks
can connect, so the message reports what was tested. tcp-443 and udp-443 no
longer call a working proxy a problem, and inbound shows AutoNAT's results.

Explain Change →

Walkthrough

The change adds unmanaged WSS address verification to reachability status and daemon startup. Reachability checks now use verified-address and AutoNAT results. Documentation and tests cover these behaviors. The CLI flush call now uses its default timeout.

Changes: Unmanaged WSS reachability

Layer / File(s) Summary
Classify and verify unmanaged addresses
src/reachability/unmanaged.ts, src/reachability/libp2p-dial.ts, src/reachability/discovery.ts, test/reachability/unmanaged.test.ts
The code filters and deduplicates browser-compatible WSS addresses, verifies eligible addresses with libp2p handshakes, and classifies the results. The dial accepts an abort signal. Tests cover address classification, verification, and reporting.
Integrate verification into status checks
src/reachability/checks.ts, src/reachability/discovery.ts, src/cli/commands/reachability/status.ts, test/reachability/checks.test.ts, test/cli/reachability-unmanaged.test.ts, test/cli/reachability-existing-caddy.integration.test.ts, README.md, docs/reachability.md
Status returns unmanaged address results and adds a browser-address check when setup is absent. Check evaluation uses verified WSS and AutoNAT evidence for TCP, UDP, and inbound results. Tests and documentation describe these results and their limits.
Verify addresses during daemon startup
src/reachability/runtime.ts, test/reachability/runtime.test.ts
The runtime checks configured and running Kubo addresses and retries verification. It logs successful handshakes or warnings after retries. Shutdown waits for verification. Tests cover retries, failures, and stopping the runtime.

CLI flush invocation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Invoke flush with its default timeout
bin/run, test/cli/bin-run-flush.test.ts
The CLI invokes flush in a callback after run resolves. A subprocess test checks the timeout marker and exit code.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changed files support #222. The WSS verification, daemon retry and cancellation behavior, browser-address and JSON output, proxy-aware TCP and UDP checks, failure classification, tests, documentation, and bin/run flush fix implement the issue requirements or directly support them. The AutoNAT inbound details extend the same reachability evidence used by the UDP and inbound checks. No unrelated change is demonstrated.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue #222 requires a successful handshake to report that browsers can reach the node at the announced address and that reachability setup does not manage it. The implementation checks announced WSS addresses, reports failures with addresses and errors, avoids the TCP 443 problem for a verified proxy address, updates daemon and JSON behavior, and fixes the flush timeout. However, handshakeSucceededMessage says only that a handshake from this machine succeeded and does not say that browsers can reach the node. The PR description confirms this deliberate deviation, so the success-message requirement remains unmet.

Resolution

Update the successful-handshake status and daemon message to satisfy #222 by stating that browsers can reach the node at the announced address, while retaining the qualification that the handshake was tested from this machine and that bitsocial reachability does not manage the address. Alternatively, amend #222 before merge to accept the narrower message.

P2 Badge Verify the fallback port actually serves WebTransport

When AutoNAT reports a plain QUIC address such as /udp/4001/quic-v1, this predicate accepts it and the check claims that WebTransport can use the port. Operators can configure the QUIC and /quic-v1/webtransport listeners independently, so a node retaining only the plain QUIC listener will incorrectly receive an ok result even though browsers cannot use that UDP fallback. Require a corresponding WebTransport listener in kuboListen or a reachable address ending in /webtransport before passing this check.

Bug: a failed self-dial is reported as a definite "browsers cannot reach this node".

verifyUnmanagedAddresses dials kubo's own announced public address from the same machine. With AutoTLS, kubo announces concrete addresses such as /ip4/<public-ip>/tcp/4001/tls/sni/<ip>.<peer>.libp2p.direct/ws. They have no *, so they pass the filter at line 23.

On a home node behind a router without NAT hairpin, that self-dial times out even when outside browsers can connect. The handler at line 56 marks the address failed, and the result is then reported as a firm failure:

  • line 80 returns a browser-address check with status fail.
  • notConfiguredSummary (line 92) prints "Browsers cannot reach this node. Run: bitsocial reachability setup".
  • the daemon prints the same warning after its retries.

The comment at lines 63-65 already says a self-dial proves nothing about outside reachability, but that caution applies only to success. A failed self-dial should not become a confident fail either. Consider warn or unknown when the failing address is this machine's own public IP and AutoNAT reports that address or port as reachable.

Comment thread src/reachability/runtime.ts Resolved
- A failed self-dial to an IP not on this machine is now "unconfirmed" and
warns, since a router without NAT hairpin makes it fail even when browsers
can connect. It stays "failed" when every IP is on the machine's interfaces.
- A kubo config that cannot be parsed no longer makes the runtime's start reject.
- udp-443 only counts WebTransport on the fallback port, not plain QUIC.

Bug: the "Browsers cannot reach this node" warning is final after one identity() read, so AutoTLS nodes on a first start get a false alarm.

reportNotConfigured reads kubo's id output once. If it has no browser-dialable address yet, it warns NOT_CONFIGURED_MESSAGE and returns. It never reaches the retry loop in verifyBrowserAddresses (8 attempts, 15 s apart).

AutoTLS is enabled on freshly initialised repos (startIpfs.ts). Its /tls/sni/*.libp2p.direct/ws listener is a pattern with *, so isBrowserAddress rejects it when it comes from the config. The concrete address only shows up in id after the certificate is issued, which takes a while on a first start.

Scenario: a fresh install starts the daemon, and id has no libp2p.direct address yet. The daemon prints "Browsers cannot reach this node. To fix that, run: bitsocial reachability setup" and never checks again. A few minutes later the node is reachable over WSS. setup would also turn AutoTLS off, so the advice is wrong.

The comment in verifyBrowserAddresses already says certificates may be on their way. Fix: when there is no browser address, go through the retry loop (or re-poll identity()) before warning, and keep the immediate warning only when the retries end with nothing.

Recheck for WSS addresses that appear after startup.

If Kubo has no announced WSS address at startup, this branch returns without starting verifyBrowserAddresses. Kubo v0.43.1 can add its first AutoTLS WSS listener minutes later. This runtime then never verifies or reports that address until the daemon restarts. Schedule a later identity check when no address exists, or include this case in the background verification loop. The root cause is at Line 189, outside the marked changed lines; the new verification workflow makes it relevant. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Handle dial rejections that are not Error instances.

If the injected dial rejects with a string or object without message, .message.replace(...) throws. Status then loses the address results instead of reporting a failed or unconfirmed handshake. Convert the caught value to a message before normalizing whitespace. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Based on learnings: “caught values are not guaranteed to be Error instances”; check error instanceof Error before reading message.
