Review comments at @packages/expo/app.plugin.js:
- Around line 18-51: Replace the locally defined isAgentEnvironment and
isAutomatedEnvironment checks in the Expo plugin with imports from
@clerk/shared/utils, and remove the duplicated isTruthyEnvValue and
environment-variable lists. Preserve the existing callers, including
maybeWriteAgentRules, so values such as CLAUDECODE=False follow the shared
helper behavior.
- Around line 53-70: Update maybeWriteAgentRules to return immediately when
isProductionEnvironment() is true, alongside the existing didWriteAgentRules,
isAutomatedEnvironment(), and isAgentEnvironment() guards, so withClerkExpo
never writes agent rules during production evaluation.
Review comments at @packages/shared/src/__tests__/agentRules.spec.ts:
- Around line 89-105: Add a test in the agent rules suite for an orphan BEGIN
marker followed by user text, invoke writeClerkAgentRules twice with the same
configuration, and assert after each invocation that the user text remains in
AGENTS.md.
Review comments at @packages/shared/src/agentRules/index.ts:
- Around line 162-177: Update upsertMarkedBlock to detect unbalanced markers
before insertion: only search for the end marker when startIndex is valid, and
return the original content unchanged when either marker exists without a
matching pair. Preserve replacement for balanced markers and existing insertion
behavior when neither marker is present.
- Around line 253-260: Update FileSystemAdapter and writeClerkAgentRules to
support optional renameSync-based atomic writes: create a unique temporary file
in the target’s directory, write the complete agent-rule content there, then
rename it to the existing target file. Apply this to existing agent-rule files
while preserving dry-run and unchanged behavior, and avoid relying on the
module-local didWrite guard for cross-process coordination.
Review comments at @packages/shared/src/utils/runtimeEnvironment.ts:
- Around line 22-32: Remove CURSOR_TRACE_ID from agentEnvironmentVariables and
prevent it from contributing to isAgentEnvironment(). Preserve
CURSOR_EXTENSION_HOST_ROLE as an agent signal only when its value is exactly
'agent-exec', while leaving the other configured environment checks unchanged.
Review comments at @packages/upgrade/src/cli.js:
- Around line 293-295: Update the sdks.length === 0 branch in the --agents-md
flow to return a nonzero failure status after rendering the warning, so explicit
AGENTS.md generation with no discovered SDK packages is reported as
unsuccessful.
- Around line 249-254: Move the interactive prompt and writeAgentsMd call from
before performUpgrade to after performUpgrade and replacement operations
complete successfully. Keep the existing isInteractive and sdks checks, and only
write the rules after the upgrade has produced its final installed SDK state.
Review comments at @packages/upgrade/src/util/agent-rules.js:
- Around line 9-10: Update the SDK discovery flow using workspaceRoot and
packageDirs so it scans the workspace root package.json in addition to all
workspace package directories, ensuring a root-level @clerk/nextjs declaration
is detected by --agents-md.

Log a warning with the failure reason instead of swallowing it, and skip loading the agent-rules module in production Next.js builds. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

…workspace root Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Claude Code reads AGENTS.md directly, so the writer only updates AGENTS.md. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…e user removes it The writer records its first write in node_modules/.cache/clerk and skips later runs when the section is gone. clerk-upgrade --agents-md still forces a write. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…cted Restores isAgentEnvironment() and extends it to match @vercel/detect-agent's env signals (Codex, Gemini CLI, OpenCode, Augment, Antigravity, Replit, Copilot CLI). A dev run without an agent records nothing, so the first later run under an agent still writes AGENTS.md. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…age.json
"clerk": { "agentsMd": false } in the app's package.json stops all writes,
including clerk-upgrade --agents-md, and removes existing Clerk sections from
AGENTS.md. The dev log now names this team-wide opt-out first.

…ection per app
In a workspace, every app writes to the root AGENTS.md under its own marker
(clerk-agent-rules:<sdk>:<app dir>), and each section points at the SDK copy
that app installed. "clerk": { "agentsMd": false } in an app's package.json
turns off and removes only that app's section; in the root package.json it
removes them all. Removed sections are remembered one by one, and
clerk-upgrade --agents-md writes a section for each workspace app.

Turborepo's default strict env mode strips agent env vars from dev tasks, so env-only detection never fired under turbo dev. The writer now also writes when the repo (up to its .git folder) has agent files such as AGENTS.md, CLAUDE.md, .claude/, or .cursor/. The check moves from isClerkAgentRulesWriteAllowed() into writeClerkAgentRules(), so package.json opt-outs also clean up on any dev run. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…h other's AGENTS.md intro The intro section now carries a clerk-agent-rules-version stamp, and the writer never replaces an intro with a higher version. A test pins the intro text to its version, so changing the text without bumping the version fails. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Description
Clerk SDKs now tell AI coding agents which Clerk APIs are current, and point them to the Clerk plugin.
AGENTS.md. It lists the current APIs for that version and recommends the Clerk plugin (npx plugins add clerk/skills).AGENTS.md. The block sends the agent tonode_modules/@clerk/<sdk>/AGENTS.mdand links the Markdown docs athttps://clerk.com/docs.md.CLAUDE.md, the SDKs create one that importsAGENTS.md. If it has one without that import, they add@AGENTS.mdto it.CLERK_AGENTS_MD=falseturns it off.@clerk/react/viteand@clerk/vue/viteadd Vite plugins that do the same for React and Vue apps.npx @clerk/upgrade --agents-mdwrites the blocks on demand, and interactive upgrades offer to after the packages upgrade.@clerk/shared/agentRulesholds the writer and the plugin text.pnpm agents-md:synccopies that text into each package'sAGENTS.md, andpnpm lint:agents-mdfails CI when a copy drifts.Hold: this ships with the Clerk plugin rollout (DOCS-12279). Merge it alongside DOCS-12283 after the go-ahead. The
AGENTS.mdtext links to/docs/guides/ai/overview, which gets the plugin install steps in DOCS-12283.Checklist
