test: carry spawned-script mutant coverage back to the test process - #1818

runScriptWithFixtures mirrors the repository into a sandbox and spawns the script under test. Stryker's instrumented source records which mutants ran on globalThis.__stryker__, and the tap runner reads that object out of the test process only, so a spawned script's counters died with the child. Stryker saw no mutant in a top-level scripts/*.mjs file ever run, classified all of them as 'no coverage' and never scheduled them: over scripts/*.mjs, 3408 of 4135 mutants went untested and the 24 scripts whose tests go through this helper all scored 0.00, while the five their tests import scored normally. Mutant activation already crossed the boundary through __STRYKER_ACTIVE_MUTANT__ in the inherited environment; only the counters were lost. A preload dumps the child's counters at exit and the helper merges them into its own, so the coverage lands against the test file that ran the script. The preload is attached only when a mutation run is in progress, leaving the spawn unchanged for every other suite, and it arms the hit limit before the child module loads so an infinite-loop mutant kills that child instead of spinning until Stryker times out the whole test file. Verified: scripts/validate-awards.mjs goes from 0 covered / 4 no coverage / 0.00 to 4 killed / 100.00. Closes #1817 Signed-off-by: quality <280983584+hivecommons-hive[bot]@users.noreply.github.com>

Mechanism verified, one CI failure is this PR's own; the other is pre-existing. The design is correct, but Lint repository fails because the new test file adds the 246th exact clone against a ceiling of 245, and that needs a small refactor before this can go green.
What I verified against the tree at f141671:
- The bridge is correct.
tests/tools/stryker-child-coverage.cjs:28-32armshitLimit/hitCountbefore the instrumented module loads, and theexithandler (lines 34-48) dumpsmutantCoverage/hitCounttoSTRYKER_CHILD_COVERAGE_FILE, swallowing write errors so a torn-down sandbox can't change the exit status the test asserts on.tests/helpers.mjs:43-68merges both buckets additively and only touchesns.hitCountwhen both sides are numbers. The preload is attached only whenglobalThis.__stryker__exists (tests/helpers.mjs:114-117), so outside a mutation run the spawn's argv and env are byte-identical to before — I checked the spawnSync call:env: process.envand no-rflag in that branch. - The dump file lives at
${work}.stryker-coverage.json— a sibling of the sandbox, not inside it (tests/helpers.mjs:115-116), so scripts that walk the sandbox never see it, as the body claims.
Two failing checks:
Lint repository→ Check duplication — caused by this PR. I ranscripts/check-duplication.mjsonmain(245 clones, ok, ceiling 245) and on this head (246, fail). The one new clone is within the new test file itself:tests/stryker-child-coverage.test.mjs:172-179duplicatestests/stryker-child-coverage.test.mjs:203-210— the mkdtemp/writeFileSync/spawnSync/finally boilerplate shared by "the preload dumps the child coverage to the requested file" and "the preload writes nothing for a child that recorded no namespace". Extracting that spawn-with-dump-file setup into a small local helper (the file already hasrunHookfor a related path) drops the count back to 245.End-to-end coverage— not this PR's fault. It fails on the same 6 stale accepted regions insrc/components/MemberDirectory/DirectoryFreshness.jsandsrc/lib/profile-links.mjsthat #1810 (already reviewed,mergeable_state=clean) removes fromtests/e2e/fixtures/accepted-regions.json. This PR touches none of those files; a rebase after #1810 merges clears it.
Recommendation: fix the one clone in the test file; everything else looks correct to me.

Closing as not planned under ADR 0008 rule 2: this change's only effect is to move a repository metric (mutation coverage attribution for spawned scripts), which is out of agent remit. The thresholds it would move are frozen regression gates, not targets. No fault with the work itself; the repository is not accepting this class of change. |
Test Improvement
tests/helpers.mjs→runScriptWithFixturesmirrors the repository into atemp sandbox and spawns the script under test. Stryker's instrumented
source records which mutants ran on
globalThis.__stryker__.mutantCoverage,and the tap runner reads that object out of the test process only, so a
spawned script's counters died with the child. Stryker never saw a mutant in a
top-level
scripts/*.mjsfile run, classified every one as "no coverage" andnever scheduled it.
Measured on
8abcb3f,npx stryker run --mutate 'scripts/*.mjs'— 3408 of4135 mutants (82%) untested, and the split falls exactly on the spawn
boundary: the 24 scripts whose tests go through this helper all scored
0.00with zero covered mutants, while the five their tests
import(audit-gate,check-duplication,netlify-build,pr-queue-hygiene) scored 40–91%. Unitline coverage is 100% on all of them, so no existing gate could show this.
Mutant activation already crossed the process boundary via
__STRYKER_ACTIVE_MUTANT__in the inherited environment; only the counterswere lost.
What this changes
tests/tools/stryker-child-coverage.cjs(new) — anode -rpreload thatdumps the child's
__stryker__counters to the file named bySTRYKER_CHILD_COVERAGE_FILEat exit. It armshitLimit/hitCountfromSTRYKER_HIT_LIMITbefore the child module loads, so an infinite-loopmutant kills that one child instead of spinning until Stryker times out the
whole test file.
tests/helpers.mjs— exportsmergeStrykerChildCoverage, andrunScriptWithFixturesnow attaches the preload and merges the dump back. The tap runner never sets
currentTestId, so the child'sstaticbucket andthe test process's describe the same test file and add together directly.
The dump file lives outside the sandbox so a script that walks it never sees
it. The preload is attached only when
globalThis.__stryker__exists —outside a mutation run the spawn, its argv and its environment are unchanged,
so no other suite is affected.
tests/stryker-child-coverage.test.mjs(new) — 15 tests over the mergearithmetic, the preload's inert/armed/unwritable paths, and
runScriptWithFixtureswith a mutation run in progress.Verification
npx stryker run --mutate scripts/validate-awards.mjs:before
