What changed

  • renamed and polished the project as SPSS Codebook Rescue
  • modernized the Qt desktop interface, including responsive loading, clearer checkboxes, tables, summaries, and a dedicated app icon
  • improved SPSS metadata extraction, validation, missing-value handling, and Excel formatting
  • added a reproducible portable Windows build with checksum generation
  • added Windows CI and tag-based GitHub release automation
  • added a public-ready README, screenshot, GPL-3.0-only license, and repository hygiene rules
  • removed the unused macOS build path

Why

This prepares the side project for its first public release as a local-first tool for researchers who receive SPSS files with incomplete or missing codebooks but work primarily in R.

Validation

  • python -m ruff check .
  • python -m pytest -q — 9 tests passed
  • portable Windows ZIP built successfully
  • packaged EXE reached an interactive GUI state
  • ZIP contents and SHA-256 checksum verified
