Collect non-loopback origins from Nuxt's listener and pass them to Vite DevTools' allowedOrigins so the WebSocket accepts connections from LAN hosts when the server is exposed via --public / --host.

🔗 Linked issue

Resolves #1118

📚 Description

I always run my Nuxt project on one machine and test from a couple other devices on the same network. Ever since upgrading to DevTools v4, opening the panel from a LAN IP just doesn't work — the WebSocket gets rejected because allowedOrigins only has localhost.

Turns out the listen hook already has access to all the URLs Nuxt is bound to, so we just need to grab the non-loopback ones and pass them along to Vite DevTools. That's basically all this does.

In packages/devtools/src/module-main.ts:

  • Added isLoopbackHost() to filter out localhost / 127.x / ::1
  • Added collectAllowedOrigins() which reads from the listener, or from a NUXT_DEVTOOLS_ALLOWED_ORIGINS env var if you want to override manually (handy for --tunnel setups)
  • Made the listen hook async so it can call getURLs()
  • Passed the collected origins into both the Vite 8.3+ config path and the DevTools() fallback

…t#1118)

Collect non-loopback origins from Nuxt's listener and pass them to
Vite DevTools' `allowedOrigins` so the WebSocket accepts connections
from LAN hosts when the server is exposed via --public / --host.

Walkthrough

DevTools client assets are now discovered from the package peer dependency, including nightly package aliases. The module collects allowed origins from NUXT_DEVTOOLS_ALLOWED_ORIGINS or from listener URLs, excluding malformed URLs and loopback hosts. The listen hook uses the first collected origin as the public DevTools origin. Vite 8.3+ configuration and the legacy DevTools plugin receive the collected origins.

Severity of issue fixed: Medium

Merge Risk: Moderate · up to 2f993

LAN DevTools connections can remain blocked on Vite 8.3+ and for IPv6 clients, so the origin handling should be corrected before merge.

Explanation

Issue [#1118] requires DevTools WebSocket access from the hosts that Nuxt exposes. packages/devtools/src/module-main.ts reads all URLs from Nuxt's listener, converts them to origins, and passes them as allowedOrigins. The code applies the origins to both the Vite 8.3+ configuration path and the older DevTools() fallback. The issue has no separate automated-test acceptance criterion.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 0.00% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 1 functions across 1 files. (1 skipped: 1 unsupported.)

Resolution

Write docstrings for the functions missing them to satisfy the coverage threshold.

Add the stated origin override.

When a custom tunnel or reverse proxy uses an origin absent from listener.getURLs(), setting NUXT_DEVTOOLS_ALLOWED_ORIGINS has no effect. This code never reads the variable, so neither Vite path permits that origin and the DevTools WebSocket remains unavailable. Parse and add the explicit origins before passing the collection to either path. The Nuxt listener’s URL list is not a general list of external proxy origins. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Preserve the live allowedOrigins array in the Vite 8.3+ branch.

The configuration callback runs before the asynchronous listen hook obtains LAN URLs. The spread creates a new empty array, so later listener updates do not reach DevTools. A LAN WebSocket origin can therefore remain blocked.

Include IPv6 origins for wildcard listeners.

Nuxt CLI v3.37.0 forwards --public through parseListhenArgs to the dev server listener. Listhen binds public mode to IPv4 and IPv6 interfaces, but getURLs() omits IPv6 interfaces. An IPv6 LAN client can therefore reach Nuxt but fail the DevTools origin check. Include the listener’s reachable IPv6 interface origins in allowedOrigins.

Review comment at @packages/devtools/src/module-main.ts around lines 158 - 159:

the reachable IPv6 interface origins when the listener binds to wildcard
interfaces, so IPv6 LAN clients pass the DevTools origin check; retain the
existing origins derived from getURLs().
