feat(devtools): show payload size warnings and breakdown in Payload tab - #1159
When payloads get large, there's no visibility in DevTools about how big they actually are or where the data is coming from.
This PR adds:
A Payload Breakdown section at the top of the Payload tab showing total size and per-category breakdown (useState, useAsyncData, functions) with size + percentage
A warning banner when payload exceeds 100KB (yellow) or 500KB (red)
Size badges next to each individual state/data key in the editors, making it easy to spot heavy items
Origin labels (server / client / mixed) for each category, addressing the point about showing where Nuxt data originates
- Add payload size analysis with breakdown by category (state, data, functions)
- Show visual warnings for large (>100KB) and critical (>500KB) payloads
- Display size badges for individual state/data items
- Show origin indicators (server/client/mixed) for data categories
- Add visual breakdown bars showing relative sizes

references without throwing, using visited-object tracking or an established
circular-safe serializer; ensure traversal terminates and still produces a size
estimate for payload.state so the Payload tab can render.
- Around line 25-27: Update the payload-size calculation shown here and the
per-item calculation in StateEditor to measure values using Nuxt’s payload
serialization representation rather than JSON.stringify. Reuse the established
payload serializer so values such as Map are represented accurately and both
warning thresholds use the resulting payload size.

it does not mark every async-data value as server-originated. Track origin per
data key when it can be established, including client fetches and refreshes;
otherwise omit the origin label rather than making an unsupported attribution.
- Around line 111-115: Keep totalSize and its large/critical thresholds based on
the existing state, data and functions sum, and update the Payload tab label
that displays analysis.totalSize to identify it as the measured size of those
sections rather than the total payload size.

Walkthrough
The change adds payload size analysis for the state, data and functions sections. The payload page displays warnings and a sorted breakdown with sizes, percentages and available origins. The state editor displays a formatted size badge for named editors when the state size is positive.
The new Payload tab can fail to render for payloads with circular values. It can also under-report sizes for Map and Set values, show a wrong server origin for client-fetched data, and label a partial sum as the total. These problems affect the accuracy and reliability of a developer tool, not application runtime, but they should be fixed before merge.

Explanation
Issue #1007 requires DevTools to show where Nuxt data originates, including client/server origin. The PR adds the origin label UI, but usePayloadAnalysis() assigns origin: 'server' to every payload.data category and origin: 'mixed' to every state category. It does not determine the actual origin, so client-origin and mixed-origin data cannot be reported correctly. The size breakdown and warning UI implement the other stated objectives.
Resolution
Derive each category's origin from available Nuxt runtime or payload metadata, including client and mixed cases. Add automated tests that verify the origin classification and the payload warning thresholds.
Full details: Docstring Coverage
Explanation
Docstring coverage is 0.00% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 3 functions across 1 files. (2 skipped: 2 unsupported.)
Resolution
Write docstrings for the functions missing them to satisfy the coverage threshold.

Measure falsy values that have a serialised size.
If a named state or data item is false, 0, '' or null, this guard returns zero and the new badge does not appear. These values have non-empty serialised representations. Check for undefined instead so the badge can show their sizes. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Measure rich values using their payload representation.
If a state entry contains a large Map, JSON.stringify reduces that value to {}. The breakdown can then show only a few bytes and miss both warning thresholds, although Nuxt payload serialization supports Map. Apply the same correction to the per-item calculation in StateEditor.vue; it uses JSON.stringify too. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Make the size fallback safe for circular values.
If payload.state contains a circular value, JSON.stringify throws and estimateSize recurses until it throws too. The fallback call is not protected by the catch, so the Payload tab can fail to render. Track visited objects, or use a serializer that handles circular payload values. StateEditor.vue already treats circular values as supported input. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Do not label all async data as server-originated.
When useAsyncData runs with server: false, Nuxt fetches the value on the client and stores the result in payload.data. This breakdown still labels that data server. A client refresh can make the same label inaccurate later. Track origin per data key, or omit the label where origin cannot be established; the fixed label does not meet the PR’s client/server-origin objective. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Label the partial sum as a subtotal, or measure the full payload.
totalSize adds only state, data and functions. Other fields on the client payload object can be sent to the client and are not counted. The Payload tab still shows this value as "Total payload size", and the large and critical flags use it. A large field outside these three sections can keep the total below 100 KB and hide the warning.
Choose one of these fixes:
Include the other payload fields in totalSize.
Keep the current sum and change the wording to show that it covers only the measured sections.
The diff below changes the wording:
🔧 Suggested wording change
- Total payload size is <strong>{{ formatBytes(analysis.totalSize) }}</strong>.+ Measured state, data and functions size is <strong>{{ formatBytes(analysis.totalSize) }}</strong>.
