fix(server): a file picker closes when its page is replaced - #22062
If a page opens a file picker and the person navigates away without answering, the panel keeps showing "The page asks for a file" on the new page. The stale picker can still be answered.
Change
At the main frame's domcontentloaded, close the picker if its input belongs to a replaced document. The check evaluates element.ownerDocument === document on the input, and the evaluation rejects once the old document's context is gone. It does not use isConnected, so a picker from an input that was never added to the page (document.createElement('input').click()) stays open across its own document's domcontentloaded. A picker whose offer was still being prepared when its document was replaced is dropped instead of being offered.
Known limit: the picker closes at the new page's domcontentloaded, not when the navigation commits. On a slow page, the stale prompt stays answerable until then. A person's answer fails harmlessly (answer returns false), but an agent's preview_upload in that window gets a raw Playwright error instead of "No file picker is open".
Scope and approval
No maintainer approval and no triaged issue. This is a small fix for an obvious bug.
Verification
Branch fix/browser-file-chooser-navigation, commit 83e04f14a5, on main at 05696c636e.
Preview test suite: 103 passed across 10 files. Typecheck: 0 errors. The change touches only apps/server/src/preview/ServerBrowser.ts and its test file.
All 4 new tests fail against the unchanged main source at 94ec6097c6. Two show the bug: "a file picker closes when its page is replaced by a new document" (on main the close never arrives) and "a file picker is not offered after its document changes while reading accept" (on main the picker is still offered). The third, "a file picker from a detached input stays open across its own DCL", guards a case the fix must not break: upload helpers that click an input never added to the page. On main it times out waiting for the new document check, which does not exist there. The fourth, "a file picker closes when its page is replaced while control changes hands", checks that a picker offered again to the next person still closes; on main it also times out waiting for that check.
In the web client, the picker bar now disappears when the tab navigates to another page; on main it stays over the new page.
Before (main)
After
Picker open
After navigating away
Limits:
The guard that only closes the picker if it is still the same one protects a very narrow window, and it has no dedicated test.
Between a navigation committing and the new document's domcontentloaded, the panel can briefly still show the old prompt. Answers in that window fail safely.
A navigation inside an iframe does not clear a picker from that iframe.
Not checked: Electron desktop tabs (they use native pickers) and mobile.

A file picker the controller had not answered stayed open after the page navigated to a new document, so the panel kept asking for a file the new page never requested. Probe the input element at DCL and close the picker only when its document was replaced; keep it open while the same document is still active.

Walkthrough
File chooser offers are now serialized per tab. ServerBrowser checks chooser elements against the current document before offering them and during frame navigation. Tests cover overlapping offers, document changes, and controller handoffs.
Changes: File chooser lifecycle
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Serialize offers and check document ownership apps/server/src/preview/ServerBrowser.ts
File chooser offers are queued per tab. The browser checks document ownership before publishing a chooser and closes an active chooser when navigation shows that its document changed.
Test chooser lifecycle apps/server/src/preview/ServerBrowser.test.ts
The test mock now supports document ownership probes. Tests cover overlapping offers, same-document navigation, document commits, control changes, and document changes during asynchronous checks.

Merge Risk: Minimal · previous review c1f1d
No actionable issue remains from the reviewed file-picker lifecycle change. It is ready to merge after normal checks.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to 83e04
The change narrows stale file-picker behavior without adding upload permissions or changing controller ownership. No introduced security issue was established. Cleanup still waits for the replacement page’s DOMContentLoaded event, and actual browser behavior during that interval remains unverified.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The changed control governs the pending chooser of a preview tab and files supplied through existing answer or automation operations. The comparison adds no caller or upload authority, and file-setting continues to use the captured chooser rather than resolving a destination in the replacement document.
Security Findings and Attack Paths
inferred — A stale prompt can remain answerable between document replacement and DOMContentLoaded. That exposure predates this PR and is narrowed, not eliminated. No new cross-document file-delivery path was established; failure of the old browser handle during this interval remains an unverified runtime assumption.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — The existing answer path requires matching tab and chooser IDs and an offer belonging to the current controller. Handoff generates a fresh offer ID. Asynchronous answer and automation completion close state only if their captured chooser state remains current; these controls are unchanged.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — A rejected document probe is treated as stale state. Viewer answers convert file-setting failures to false, whereas automation uploads can propagate a browser error. The differing failure behavior is unchanged and does not itself establish unauthorized file delivery.

A control change during the document probe re-keys the chooser record,
so the probe compared a stale record and left a replaced page's picker open.

Conflict with pingdotgg#22557, which deletes two ServerBrowser.test.ts file-picker tests whose fake elements this branch had adapted; kept main's deletion.

thanks @fcgith. your document-ownership check correctly preserves detached upload inputs, and the chooser-handle guard correctly survives controller handoffs. i kept both and your commits, merged current main, and pushed c1f1d7f3cabf7faf2412d84a8606f502cfabc532 to this branch.
the cleanup now runs in the existing framenavigated handler for every frame. this removes the extra listener, closes the picker before the replacement document's DOMContentLoaded, and also covers iframe navigation. the offer-time check still drops a chooser whose document changed while reading its attributes. offers also run in order through a per-tab promise queue, fixing the review bot's overlapping-offer race without changing the picker protocol. production diff against main: 24 added lines and one removed line in one file.
verification:
reproduced main's stale picker in the real web client's browser panel with a replacement document held before DOMContentLoaded. the picker stayed open even after loading finished. on this head it disappears while the replacement is still loading.
the updated commit-boundary regression fails against both main and the original fix. all 35 tests in the existing server-browser test file pass, including main/iframe commits, detached input and same-document navigation, controller handoff, the pending-offer race, and overlapping offers. the overlap regression fails before serialization (expected .csv, got .txt).
blacksmith vp run check:changed passes format, lint, both knip passes, graphql, affected typechecks, and focused tests.
real viewer cancel and detached-input upload pass; the page received proof.txt. the recording shows hash navigation preserving the picker, followed by document replacement closing it before DOMContentLoaded.
separate chrome runtime checks passed for iframe replacement, unrelated iframe navigation, hash/history navigation, reload/same-url replacement, detached upload, and BFCache.
final-head github ci and the review bot are green: 23 successful checks, none pending or failing. the bot reports no remaining actionable issue.
two independent reviews found no issues on this exact head.
unverified: electron's native picker, react native clients, and remote/relay/tunnel connections. overlapping-offer ordering is unit-verified; chrome suppressed the second simultaneous chooser in the runtime fixture. iframe removal without navigation remains outside this fix.
Serialize file-chooser offers before the document probe.
onFileChooser starts each offerFileChooser without awaiting it. If offer B commits while offer A is awaiting isFileChooserCurrent, offer A can overwrite B because it captured previous before either await. B's controller then retains an ID that no longer matches tab.fileChooser, so setChooserFiles returns false without a close notification. The new probe adds another asynchronous gap and widens this existing race. The framenavigated cleanup does not recover same-document overlapping offers.

installed github/main (5e9d56416f) in a separate worktree with vp i, then installed the exact pr head with vp i. ran both real dev servers in the background, sequentially. main used web/server ports 8693/16733; the pr used 5733/13773 with an explicit isolated .t3 home.
used repository playwright dependencies and /usr/bin/google-chrome. added the real repository as a project through each app, created threads, selected codex gpt-6.1-sol, and sent real provider turns. codex opened tmpfiles.org and clicked its existing upload control through the server browser tools. no mocks, fixtures, demo data, or injected upload controls.
reproduced main: after taking control and navigating through the panel's address bar to example.com, the old "the page asks for files" bar remained over the new page.
on this head, the same navigation clears the bar. hash navigation on tmpfiles.org preserves the bar. cancel clears it. reopening and choosing the repository's public README.md through the panel succeeds: tmpfiles.org displays the uploaded filename and download url, and the picker clears.
existing server-browser tests passed through blacksmith: vp test run apps/server/src/preview/ServerBrowser.test.ts reported 35 passed. the head also has 23 successful ci checks, none pending or failing.
runtime observations from playwright against the running app:
main: {"picker":1,"url":"https://example.com/"}
pr: {"hashPicker":1,"afterPicker":0,"url":"https://example.com/"}
cancel and choose files completed; picker cleared
blacksmith: Test Files 1 passed; Tests 35 passed
matching browser-panel captures after navigating to the same destination:
inspected the captures and checked uploaded video playback and seeking in t3's browser player.

native electron pickers, ios/android, macos/windows, remote/relay/tunnel connections, and other providers were not exercised. iframe navigation, detached-input ownership, overlapping offers, pending-offer races, and controller changes during an in-flight probe are covered by the passing existing tests, but were not reproduced through this real app pass. no slow-navigation timing claim is made from the normal website navigation recording.
