fix(server): Codex native subagents inherit parent options - #23818
juliusmarminge wants to merge 3 commits into
Conversation
Injected orchestration instructions and delegate_task/create_threads descriptions forbid native subagents whenever inheritedOptions is nonempty, so a Codex parent on xhigh routes plain subagents through delegate_task even though Codex native spawn inherits those options. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Orchestration instructions told agents to avoid native subagents whenever inheritedOptions was nonempty, so a Codex parent on xhigh reasoning routed plain parallel subagents through delegate_task. Codex native spawn already copies the parent's effective reasoning effort and supported service tier (codex-rs core/src/agent/child_config.rs), so scope the fallback to requested options, role or subagent-default overrides, and other providers. Fixed in 3cadd1fb27: omitted model options inherit only for matching provider instance and model, while modes retain their existing inheritance. Verified against resolveTarget; four toolkit tests and targeted lint pass.
Problem
A Codex thread at Extra High that requested plain parallel subagents was instructed to use
delegate_tasksolely becauseinheritedOptionswas nonempty. On Codex CLI 0.163.0, native children already inherit the parent’s effective reasoning effort and supported service tier.Change
Allow native Codex subagents when they can carry inherited model options. Update the shared injected guidance and both tool descriptions that repeated the blanket restriction. Keep
delegate_taskfor explicitly requested options, role/default overrides, and inherited options on other providers. Reuse the preserved fix and add focused instruction regressions.Scope and approval
Fixes #23525
Triaged bug via the automated issue flow. This changes MCP tool descriptions and shared agent guidance; no RPC schema, permissions, or runtime mode changes.

The visible fixture matrix is empty: no rendering code changed. Dev-server restarts during verification required recovery; both children and the parent completed. This does not establish uninterrupted runtime, the reported allowance multiplier, child service tier, priority tier, older Codex CLI versions, or role/default overrides. Windows was not exercised; the changed guidance is platform independent.
