fix(desktop): keep preview download settings out of app exports - #25428
In desktop v0.1.2 on macOS, using the Browser preview can make Settings → Appearance → Export silently write a theme into Playwright's temporary directory under a UUID filename instead of opening the native save dialog. We located the file from a real manual desktop export and verified its contents.
The preview relay strips browserContextId from Browser.setDownloadBehavior before forwarding it to Electron. The omitted context resolves to the app's default session, so the preview's download directory affects app-window downloads too. Both paired and single-file theme imports use the same affected download path.
Reproduce by letting an agent use a desktop Browser preview, then exporting a custom theme from Settings while the preview connection remains attached. Hiding the preview does not clear the override.
Change
Configure download denial/default behavior through the preview's Page domain. Allowed preview downloads keep using Electron's existing source-matched will-download handler to select their GUID path. Translate page download events into the browser events Playwright consumes, and read the GUID from the page event in the host.
These changes keep app exports at their selected destination while preserving preview download capture and denial/reallow behavior.
Scope and approval
Submitted under the small, focused, obvious-bug exception: configuration for an isolated preview is currently applied to the app's default session. This corrects that adapter boundary and preserves the existing app-save and preview-download workflows. The two production files and their existing tests address that one problem.
Refreshed upstream issue/PR searches found no duplicate covering this redirection.
Verification
Four initial regression checks fail with the original source. Two follow-up failure-path cases also failed before the review fix: rejected enable/disable commands must retain the previous event setting. Both affected suites now pass: 43 tests.
vp run check:changed upstream/main passes format, lint, both knip passes, affected typechecks, and the two test files.
Original source:
App export, preview active: completed; selected file absent; UUID file created
App export, preview hidden: completed; selected file absent; UUID file created
App export, relay released: completed; selected file absent; UUID file created
Preview download: exact contents retained
Fixed source:
App export, active/hidden/released preview: selected file exists; no diversion
Preview download: exact contents retained
App cancellation: cancelled; no file created
Preview denial: download canceled; app export still works
Preview allowed again: exact contents retained
The integration script selects destinations programmatically. Separately, the reporter exercised Settings → Export in a development desktop containing the fix, chose the destination in the native save flow, and produced a 7,167-byte file identical to the expected paired-theme export. Cancellation was checked automatically; Windows/Linux runtime verification was not performed.
Implemented with GPT-6.1-Sol (high reasoning effort) through the Codex harness in T3 Code.
Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — This is a small, isolated desktop bug fix that separates preview download handling from the app's default export session. It updates the two affected production paths and adds regression coverage without changing product defaults or introducing a new capability.

Walkthrough
The preview relay now configures page download behavior and conditionally reports translated browser download events. The desktop browser host now tracks download starts from page events.

verified as-is at 3dabba59bfb8327bd95c972d4857f5eb872aff68 on a linux boat vm. no source changes or pushes were needed.
reproduced on github/main (32ecd71726fee16f335484c1f95cbce126d461f6) in a separate worktree: after a real codex gpt-6.1-sol turn attached the native desktop preview, settings > appearance > export silently wrote the 3367-byte custom theme under a uuid in playwright temporary storage. no native save dialog appeared.
on the exact pr head, the same flow opened the native save dialog. selecting downloads and then desktop saved the theme in each selected directory. both files matched the main export byte for byte.
cancel left the existing export unchanged. a subsequent real codex preview download still retrieved the correct 277-byte repository report. a separate chrome web client also completed that provider download path.
used real git project data and provider turns, with no mocks, fixtures, or demo data. desktop automation used playwright noDefaults:true so the verification harness did not alter download behavior.
blacksmith: all 43 existing tests passed across CdpRelay.test.ts and DesktopBrowserHost.test.ts. the pr reports 7 successful checks, 0 failing and 0 pending.
macos/windows native dialogs and native ios/android clients were unavailable on this linux vm. paired light/dark theme export was not separately exercised. preview denial/reallow and rejected-command state preservation passed existing tests but were not separately exercised interactively.
