A remote client can see a desktop-hosted preview and successfully take control, yet clicking and typing do nothing. Reproduced on macOS desktop host and remote desktop client, nightly 0.1.3-nightly.20261026.3717.
The live client debugger reached the canvas handler with controller: "you", a painted frame and viewportRef.current === null. Coordinate conversion returned null, so the handler never focused the keyboard textarea or forwarded pointer input. Desktop pages attached over CDP need not have a Playwright-emulated viewport; the server previously sent no viewport message in that case.
Change
Read the existing isolated-world CSS page metrics when Playwright has no viewport. Send those dimensions before the initial stream starts, and refresh them on native Page.frameResized events. Reuse the existing metrics reader without changing its implementation.
The native page is not resized or emulated. Headless previews retain their configured viewport path.
Scope and approval
This is a focused fix for an obvious failure in the existing remote preview capability, qualifying for the small-bug exception in CONTRIBUTING.md. It adds no setting, workflow or wire contract. Related symptom: #19420; this does not claim to fix that report's additional connection stalls.
Verification
Before: a focused service regression failed because the viewer received control and a frame but no viewport dimensions when page.viewportSize() returned null.
After: the same regression passes, including a native resize from 1280×800 to 960×600 without calling setViewportSize.
pnpm exec vp test run apps/server/src/preview/ServerBrowser.test.ts apps/server/src/preview/ServerBrowserPage.test.ts apps/server/src/preview/ServerBrowserStream.test.ts: 42 passed; the two browser-backed suites are blocked because the pinned Chromium headless-shell executable is absent.
pnpm exec vp run check:changed: format, lint, both knip checks, GraphQL and affected-package typechecks passed. Its test step has the same missing-browser blocker, with 31 passing tests and 18 not executed.
git diff --check passed. Rebased onto current origin/main; the three changed file contents were unchanged by the rebase.
No post-fix test against the installed desktop app: this PR has not been installed or deployed. Local CodeRabbit review was unavailable.
Reversible server-only change; failure would affect streamed preview coordinates. No data migration.

Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — This is a focused fix to an existing streamed desktop-preview path: it reports the page's current viewport when no Playwright viewport exists and refreshes it on native resize. The implementation reuses existing metrics logic, leaves headless previews unchanged, and includes targeted regression coverage.

Desktop viewport broadcasts now use page metrics when Playwright has no emulated viewport. Desktop tabs also broadcast updated dimensions after CDP frame-resize events.
Desktop tabs enable the CDP Page domain and broadcast updates on Page.frameResized. The test checks the initial and updated dimensions when Playwright reports no emulated viewport.
pingdotgg/t3code#22942 reports missing or stale viewport dimensions for desktop tabs, which this change addresses with metric-based broadcasts and resize updates.

Desktop previews now receive viewport dimensions, which fixes pointer and keyboard input. In rare cases, such as rapid resizes with a zoom change or a slow viewer with a full queue, the preview can keep stale dimensions until the next viewport update. The risk is limited and recoverable, so the PR is mergeable with these edge cases noted.

Serialize viewport reads or discard stale results.
Each Page.frameResized event starts broadcastViewport without waiting for earlier calls. When layoutSize is unavailable, readPageMetrics makes several CDP round trips, and its zoom check can retry. If an earlier read takes more round trips than a later read, the later read can finish first and push newer dimensions. The earlier read then pushes its older dimensions. The viewer keeps the stale viewport until the next viewport update.
Use one of these fixes:
Give each tab a read sequence. Discard a read result when a newer read has started.
Serialize viewport reads for each tab.

Preserve viewport updates when the viewer queue is full.
If a desktop viewer's 64-entry output queue is full when Page.frameResized runs, viewer.push drops that viewport message. This drop behavior predates the PR, but the new callback makes it reachable for native desktop resizes. The viewer can keep stale dimensions until a later viewport broadcast occurs. Handle viewport as replaceable state on overflow, release acknowledgments for displaced frames, and preserve terminal and control messages.
