feat: @-mention a browser tab so the agent works in it - #25469
A user who signs in to a site in a thread's browser tab has no way to point the agent at that tab. The agent doesn't know which tab is meant, so it often opens a new one. A new tab doesn't share the user's page or sign-in state, so the agent lands on the login page.
Change
Typing @ in the composer now lists the current thread's open browser tabs, newest first, filtered by title or address. Picking one inserts a chip. The agent gets the tab's title, address and ID, and is told to pass that ID to the preview_* tools rather than open a new tab. If the tab has closed or belongs to another thread, it is told to reopen the address with preview_open.
Contracts: a new browser-tab composer context kind (environmentId, threadId, tabId, title, url).
Shared: a provider payload for that kind, holding the tab ID and the instructions above.
Client runtime: tab matching for the @ menu and building the context record, shared by web and mobile.
Web and desktop:
@ menu: lists the thread's open tabs. It only watches the thread's tabs while an @ mention is being typed, so typing nothing else costs nothing extra.
Chip: shows the tab's favicon and current title. Clicking it opens the tab in the Browser panel, and it's greyed out once the tab is closed.
Drafts: the draft's thread mention list (threadContexts) is now linkedContexts and holds threads and tabs. A tab could not reuse the thread record, because its kind decides what the agent is told, which chip is drawn and where the draft runs. Drafts saved under the old key still load. Only thread mentions decide which machine a new draft runs on.
Mobile:
The same @ items, chip and details sheet.
Tapping a sent chip opens the tab in the mobile browser.
Only tabs running on the server are listed, because those are the only ones the mobile app can see.
Docs: one paragraph in docs/user/composer.md.
Servers older than this change don't recognize the new kind, so their agents see the mention as unavailable. Nothing breaks.
Scope and approval
Proposed in #22963. That discussion has no maintainer reply yet, so this PR doesn't have the approval that CONTRIBUTING.md asks for. I'm opening it so the working change can be seen; please close it if the direction isn't wanted.
This works best together with #22877, which keeps the agent's view of a desktop tab the same as the page the user sees.
Verification
Focused tests:
The contract round-trips the new record.
The provider payload includes the tab ID and the preview_* instructions.
The @ menu matches and orders tabs and skips blank ones.
Drafts keep tabs beside threads, and drafts saved as threadContexts still load.
Existing web composer, draft-store and pending-input tests, and mobile menu and chip tests, pass after the rename.
vp run check:changed passes: format, lint, knip, typecheck (34 packages) and tests.
Manual check on web (dev server, seeded data, Codex):
I opened Hacker News in a thread's browser tab, typed @, and the tab was listed.
Picking it inserted the chip. Its tooltip shows "Show in browser" and the address.
I asked "what is the top story in this tab?". The agent passed that tab's ID to preview_status and preview_snapshot, never called preview_open, and answered correctly.
After I closed the tab, the chip in the sent message was greyed out and disabled.
Not checked:
The desktop app and the mobile app.
A page that requires sign-in.
The agent clicking or typing in the mentioned tab.
Before (t3 0.1.1): with Hacker News open, @hacker only matches files. After: the open tab is listed, the chip shows its title, and the agent reads that tab.

Implemented with Claude Opus 5.5 in Claude Code, running in T3 Code.
Typing @ in the composer lists the thread's open browser tabs. The chip gives the agent the tab id to pass to the preview tools instead of opening a fresh tab, so the user's signed-in page is reused. Web drafts keep thread and tab mentions in one linkedContexts list; drafts saved as threadContexts still load.

🟠 Highsrc/pendingUserInput.ts:17
Browser-tab mentions in pending-question answers become only [label](URL), so the projected answer drops the selected tab's tabId and threadId. Because onRespondToUserInput sends this string without the linked records, the agent cannot distinguish tabs that share a URL; preserve the tab identity and targeting instructions in the projected answer, as the normal browser-tab provider payload does.

Move browser-tab contexts with a recovered prompt.
When a changed queued edit leaves the queue, recovery calls moveComposerPromptAndImages. That operation removes inline context references and does not copy linkedContexts. The destination send therefore loses the browser-tab mention and its tab record. It does not send an unresolved reference because stripInlineContextReferences removes the reference first.
Handle browser-tab records in this shared move operation.

Minor · Do not fall back to the newest tab for a missing reference. · ThreadFeed.tsx:1898-1904
Do not fall back to the newest tab for a missing reference.
When the referenced tab closes, BrowserPreviewRouteScreen selects latestBrowserTab(tabs). If another tab remains, the route displays and controls that tab. Tapping a tab reference can therefore open the wrong tab.
Use the newest tab only when no tab ID was requested. When the requested ID is absent, preserve that identity and show the reference as closed instead.

Scope browser-tab context IDs by thread identity.
A browser-tab chip pasted into another thread is supported and still points to its original thread. The importer therefore must preserve same-environment records from different threads.
Browser-tab IDs currently use only kind and tabId. If two threads use the same valid tabId, addLinkedContexts treats the second record as a duplicate and drops it. Restore or import then silently loses the second tab mention.
Update browserTabContextRecord so its contextId includes threadId, and update the related reference-rewrite paths. Do not reject mismatched-thread browser-tab records at this importer.

Recheck the requested tab while it remains selected.
If the requested tab closes after this check marks it "open", initialTabStatus stays "open". Line 102 then selects another tab, and the closed-tab alert does not run. This can show a different tab when the user opened a browser-tab mention. Detect that closure while selectedTabId is still the requested tab, then close the preview instead of using the fallback.

This PR does not currently meet the contribution guide's prior-approval requirement. Adds browser-tab mentions across composer and clients. Scope section acknowledges missing approval; discussion #22963 has no replies. Please obtain explicit upstream maintainer approval of the direction and scope in the relevant Ideas discussion and link the approval comment when requesting reconsideration. For a substantial bug fix, establish the failure and intended behavior through maintainer issue triage. Verification and draft status do not replace that requirement.
