fix(server): device tools accept a host's label and reject unknown hosts - #25836
A delegated agent called device_list with hostId: "oliverMac". That is the host's label; its id is a UUID. The tool returned {hosts: [], devices: []} with no error, and device_open then said "No ios devices were found on host oliverMac". The agent took that as a real answer and decided the Mac had no simulators, though a bare device_list showed it ready with four.
Change
resolveHostId in apps/server/src/mcp/toolkits/device/handlers.ts resolves the input once, against the known hosts: an exact id, else a single case-insensitive label match. If nothing matches, the error lists the hosts as label (id). If a label matches more than one host (new EAS hosts share the default "EAS Simulator" label), the error lists just those hosts and asks for an id. The error text is bounded: the selector is cut to 128 characters, labels to 64, and the list to 10 hosts. device_list, device_open, device_screenshot and device_close use the resolved id from there on.
device_screenshot used to replace every failure with "Device screenshot failed.", which would hide this error too. It now returns the message of a typed device error, the same way the other device tools do, and keeps the generic text for anything else.
The tool descriptions stay the same. Labels now just work, so no model-facing description changed and the evals were not run.
Scope and approval
There is no prior issue. This is a small fix for an obvious bug: a wrong hostId returned an empty success instead of an error, and agents read that as "no devices". The change stays inside the four device MCP handlers and the screenshot error mapping.
Overlaps with #25661, which rewrites the same handlers but doesn't resolve labels. Whichever lands second needs a small rebase.
Verification
handlers.test.ts: a label resolves to its id, an exact id passes through, and unknown or ambiguous hosts fail with the candidates listed. Both tests fail on main.
McpDeviceToolkit.test.ts, through the MCP server: device_list with the label THIS MACHINE returns the local host and its device, and device_screenshot with an unknown host returns the host list as its error text. The screenshot assertion fails without the error-mapping change.
vp run check:changed passes.
Not checked against a real device host. No runtime transcript, since that would need a server with a configured remote host.
Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — Device tools now accept unique host labels and return actionable errors for unknown or ambiguous hosts. Existing access checks and default targeting remain unchanged, keeping the change contained.

Device MCP handlers now resolve supplied host selectors against the current host list. Selectors can match an exact host ID or a unique case-insensitive label. Screenshot failures expose DeviceToolError messages.
resolveHostId resolves exact IDs and unique case-insensitive labels. Unknown or ambiguous selectors return errors with candidate hosts. Tests cover successful resolution and both error cases.
Use resolved host IDs apps/server/src/mcp/toolkits/device/handlers.ts, apps/server/src/mcp/McpDeviceToolkit.test.ts
device_list, device_open, device_screenshot, and device_close resolve host selectors before use. Screenshot retains the local-host fallback when a device ID is supplied and no host resolves. Integration tests cover label matching and unknown-host errors.
pingdotgg/t3code#24033 — The change returns a specific error for unknown screenshot hosts, addressing one reported cause of opaque screenshot failures.
Possibly related PRs
pingdotgg/t3code#25661 — Both PRs change host selection in device MCP handlers, including screenshot and close operations.
pingdotgg/t3code#25259 — This PR resolves host labels and IDs from the host list used by handlers.
Label-based operations are likely mergeable, but focused tests should be added to prevent regressions in open, screenshot, and close behavior.

Keep host matching pure, but move the host-state lookup into DeviceService.close.
resolveHostId is a permitted pure helper. However, device_close still performs a separate DeviceService.state operation before calling DeviceService.close, so the handler does not only decode input, call one service operation, and map errors. Let DeviceService.close resolve the selector against its host state, while preserving exact-ID handling and existing close behavior.

Update the device_close handler to pass the decoded host selector directly to
DeviceService.close, removing the separate DeviceService.state lookup and
handler-side resolveHostId call. Move selector resolution into
DeviceService.close using its host state, preserving exact-ID handling and
existing close behavior.
Cover host-label resolution through the MCP handlers.
The new tests call only resolveHostId, so they pass if any handler stops using it. A raw label would then be compared with host IDs in device_list, device_open, and device_screenshot, while device_close would receive the raw label. Existing MCP tests use one local host, pass no hostId, and do not call device_close. Add focused MCP cases that pass a case-insensitive label and assert the filtered result or downstream host ID for all four handlers.

Handler-level label tests: applied in 4ac7296. McpDeviceToolkit.test.ts now sends a case-insensitive label to device_list and an unknown host to device_screenshot through the MCP server. The pure cases (ambiguous labels and so on) stay in handlers.test.ts.
Moving resolution into DeviceService.close: not applying. Matching labels is a convenience for agent input, so it belongs at the MCP boundary next to the other three tools. DeviceService takes canonical host ids from every caller, including the web client. Moving it for close alone would split one rule across two layers.
device_list is the only operation tested with a host label. The successful device_open and device_screenshot calls omit hostId, and no successful device_close call exists. A regression that forwards the raw label can escape these tests, especially for device_close, whose mock accepts any host value.
Pass "THIS MACHINE" to all three operations and assert that the mocked service receives "local".

@coderabbitai on the per-operation label nitpick: not applying. Every handler makes the same one-line resolveHostId call. handlers.test.ts covers that helper directly, and McpDeviceToolkit.test.ts covers it end to end through device_list and device_screenshot. Asserting that each remaining mock receives "local" would only test wiring, which this repo's test guidance asks us not to add.
@flamboh Agreed. I withdraw the per-operation label-test request.
I checked the shared resolver calls in all four handlers, the helper tests, and the MCP-server tests. The proposed extra assertions would only check argument forwarding. AGENTS.md excludes wiring-only tests, consistent with the existing testing guidance supplied here. No additional tests are needed for this nitpick.

@flamboh Thanks. I checked the new MCP-server tests. device_list receives a case-insensitive host label, and device_screenshot returns the known-host error for an unknown host. I did not run the tests.
I agree that label resolution belongs at the MCP boundary for this change. Moving only device_close resolution into DeviceService.close would split the rule across layers. I withdraw that suggestion.
The repository’s testing guidance calls for meaningful behavior tests rather than wiring-only assertions. The new MCP-server tests and the existing resolveHostId tests address the test request without per-operation mock assertions.
