fix(server): t3_thread_launch refuses models the provider does not advertise - #26625
t3_thread_launch accepted a modelSelection whose model the provider instance does not advertise, such as {instanceId: "claudeAgent", model: "gpt-6-astra"}. It created the thread, and the run failed seconds later with a provider error, leaving a dead failed thread. delegate_task already refuses the same selection with model_unavailable. Reproduced on main 9e09926 over /mcp: a made-up slug on claudeAgent returned a thread id and a run in preparing, and the provider then answered API Error: 400 unknown provider for model …. A Codex slug on claudeAgent and a Claude slug on codex were accepted the same way.
Change
The advertised-model rule from delegate_task moves into a shared helper, requireAdvertisedModel. t3_thread_launch calls it for an explicit modelSelection before anything is created, so an unadvertised model fails with model_unavailable (Model X is not advertised by provider Y.) and no thread is created. A model also passes when it matches one of an advertised model's aliases (case-insensitive, as the Claude adapter resolves them), so opus still launches on claudeAgent; delegate_task shares the helper and accepts advertised aliases too; it validates options and inherits the parent's options through the model the alias names, while the model it sends stays what the caller passed. A provider that lists no models still accepts any slug, as in delegate_task. These are unchanged:
a retry of an already accepted launch;
inherited and project-default models;
an instance that is not registered, which still goes through launchThread's existing handling.
#25736 adds the same helper for t3_thread_configure; whichever lands second takes this version, which also accepts aliases.
The peer test fixtures (RemoteDelegation.test.ts, PeerForwarding.test.ts) give the linked box's registry mock an empty provider list, since t3_thread_launch now reads it.
vp test run apps/server/src/mcp/toolkits/project/handlers.test.ts: 8/8 pass. The new test a launch with a model its provider does not advertise creates no thread launches three unadvertised selections (unknown slug, a Codex slug on claudeAgent, a Claude slug on codex) then one advertised model, and an advertised alias in another case (Opus for alias opus), which must launch, while the same alias on codex is refused. On main it fails with expected { …(6) } to match object { code: 'model_unavailable', … } because the launch returns a thread. Here it passes: each unadvertised selection fails with model_unavailable, none launches, and the advertised one does.
apps/server/src/mcp/OrchestratorMcpService.test.ts, McpHttpServer.test.ts, toolkits/core.test.ts: pass. delegate_task keeps its message; the new test validates options against the model a target names by alias and an alias case in the inherited-options test cover the alias paths.
vp run check:changed: format, lint, knip, graphql, typecheck (3 packages), tests all pass. apps/server/src/peer/RemoteDelegation.test.ts and PeerForwarding.test.ts: 32/32 pass.
Runtime transcript, before and after: the same driver over /mcp, each side on a fresh dev server (T3CODE_DEV_SEED=0) with its own fresh database and a synthetic git workspace. After the fix, the three unadvertised launches return model_unavailable, the advertised aliases opus and Opus launch on claudeAgent while opus on codex is refused, and the project holds only the accepted threads. Server-only change with no visible surface, so no captures.
Not checked: launches routed to a linked environment (the check runs against the destination's provider registry).
On this VM the two cross-provider launches ran to completion because the provider proxy here serves any model name; against a real Claude account they fail as in the issue.
… models
These tests reproduce #26619: t3_thread_launch passes an explicit
modelSelection straight to launchThread, so a model the provider instance
does not advertise creates a thread that then fails at the provider. The
test expects model_unavailable with no thread created, as delegate_task
returns, and an advertised model still launching.

…vertise
t3_thread_launch passed an explicit modelSelection straight to launchThread,
so a model the provider instance does not advertise created a thread that
then failed at the provider. delegate_task already refused that with
model_unavailable.
The rule moves into an exported requireAdvertisedModel helper in
OrchestratorMcpService, which delegate_task and t3_thread_launch both use.
The launch checks only an explicit modelSelection on a new launch, before
any thread is created; replays, inherited and project-default models, and
unregistered instances keep their current handling.

Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — Explicit MCP launches now reject unadvertised models before launch, while advertised aliases are accepted and default selections remain unchanged. The unresolved alias-option inheritance finding remains subject to the separate correctness gate.

Explicit t3_thread_launch model selections are checked against a matching provider’s advertised models. Unadvertised selections fail with model_unavailable before thread creation. Accepted launch replays bypass this validation.

Summary
Resolve advertised models and inherited options apps/server/src/mcp/OrchestratorMcpService.ts, apps/server/src/mcp/OrchestratorMcpService.test.ts
The shared helper accepts advertised slugs and case-insensitive aliases, and allows any model when the provider catalog is empty. Delegated target resolution uses the advertised slug for option lookup and inherited-option matching. Tests cover aliases and invalid options.
The launch handler checks explicit selections when a matching provider exists and skips accepted launch replays. Tests cover rejected and accepted selections. Peer test fixtures now return an empty provider list.

Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
Issue #26619 requires t3_thread_launch to reject an explicit model that the selected provider does not advertise before thread creation. handlers.ts calls the shared requireAdvertisedModel before launchThread for non-replayed explicit selections. The helper returns model_unavailable with the model and provider, accepts case-insensitive aliases, and preserves acceptance for providers with empty model lists. The added handler test verifies rejected selections create no thread and valid models and aliases launch.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The changes remain connected to issue #26619. The shared helper supports the required launch validation. The delegate_task updates preserve and extend the existing validation behavior. Provider-registry wiring, peer fixture updates, and tests support the changed validation path. No unrelated product change is demonstrated.

Move launch validation into a service.
The handler now reads the registry and implements model validation. Move this work into the service that owns thread launch, while preserving the replay and inheritance rules.
As per coding guidelines: “A transport handler does three things: decode the request, call one service method, and map the service’s typed errors to the transport’s error.”

t3_thread_launch and delegate_task refused a model given by an advertised
alias such as "opus", which launched on main because the adapters resolve
aliases case-insensitively. Match aliases the same way; slugs stay exact and
the requested model is passed through unchanged.

requireAdvertisedModel accepted an advertised alias, but delegate_task then
looked up option descriptors and the parent's model by the alias string, so
an alias skipped option validation and dropped the parent's options. The
helper now yields the advertised model it matched, and resolveTarget compares
by its slug. The requested model string is still passed through unchanged.

🟠 Highmcp/OrchestratorMcpService.ts:1381
When target.model is an accepted alias for the parent's selected model, inheritsOptions is false and delegateTask drops the parent's options from the child selection. slug canonicalizes only the requested model, while this comparison uses the raw inheritedSelection.model; canonicalize the inherited model with requireAdvertisedModel before comparing.

Resolve the inherited model alias before inheriting options.
When the parent stores the advertised alias gpt and the child requests GPT, requireAdvertisedModel resolves the child to gpt-5.4. The inheritance check compares GPT and gpt-5.4 with the inherited gpt, so it fails and drops the parent options. Resolve both selections to the same advertised model before comparing them.

Normalize only the Antigravity default sentinel before ACP dispatch.
A mixed-case antigravity-default alias passes case-insensitive validation, but delegateTask dispatches the raw model string. Antigravity ACP recognizes only the exact sentinel, so it treats the mixed-case value as an explicit model and model selection fails. Normalize only this sentinel. Preserve model for all other aliases.
