Fixes #807

Skipped providers are logged at Warning, and the error lists each provider's cause when none initialize. Filters matching no auto-discovery provider get their own error, and -ad no longer writes the default provider config.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Automatic provider discovery can run when the configured provider file is missing; the file check remains in place when discovery is disabled.
    • Discovery reports an error when no configured providers are supported or when none can be initialized.
    • If some providers initialize successfully, discovery continues with them and logs errors for providers it skips.

Walkthrough

Auto-discovery now skips provider-config file checks. It reports when no providers match and returns collected initialization errors when no provider initializes. If some providers initialize, it logs failures for the skipped providers as warnings.

Skipped-provider failures appear as Info rather than the promised Warning, and a legacy-config rename failure can prevent -ad from starting. Both are bounded issues with straightforward corrections, so merge risk is low with owner follow-up.

Explanation

The changes implement the main #807 behavior. They collect provider initialization errors, return provider-specific causes when no provider initializes, return a separate no-match error, and skip provider-config creation in auto-discovery mode. However, the current PR description requires skipped providers to log at Warning. internal/runner/autodiscovery.go logs them with gologger.Info(), and the test asserts levels.LevelInfo. This does not meet the stated Warning-level requirement.

Test the changed ParseOptions path.

This test calls New directly. New uses autoDiscoveryConfig() when AutoDiscovery is enabled and does not load the provider-config file. It cannot detect a regression in the ParseOptions provider-config guard.

Add a CLI-level test that parses -ad without a default provider config and asserts that parsing does not create the file.

🌐 Web query:

github.com/projectdiscovery/gologger v1.1.73 Fatal implementation

💡 Result:

`gologger.Fatal()` is documented to return an `*Event` and exit when a fatal error is encountered. The available source I could inspect is **v1.1.71**, not the requested **v1.1.73**, so it doesn’t establish the exact implementation in v1.1.73. ([pkg.go.dev](https://pkg.go.dev/github.com/projectdiscovery/gologger))

The v1.1.73 implementation remains unverified; the closest source is the [v1.1.71 `gologger.go` file](https://github.com/projectdiscovery/gologger/blob/v1.1.71/gologger.go).

🌐 Web query:

site:pkg.go.dev/github.com/projectdiscovery/gologger/v1.1.73 gologger Fatal exits

💡 Result:

Yes. In **gologger v1.1.73**, the docs say `gologger.Fatal()` “exits the program” on a fatal error. The package README also shows `gologger.Fatal().Msg(...)`. ([pkg.go.dev](https://pkg.go.dev/github.com/projectdiscovery/gologger%40v1.1.73))

That confirms the documented behavior, though it doesn’t specify the exit code.

Parse -ad before legacy config migration.

ParseOptions migrates config.yaml before it parses -ad. A rename failure calls gologger.Fatal, which exits the program. Auto-discovery instead uses autoDiscoveryConfig() and does not read provider-config.yaml. Move the migration after flag parsing and skip it when options.AutoDiscovery is true.

Skipping: the legacy config.yaml rename predates -ad, only runs when an old config already exists, and migrates the user's own file rather than creating one. ParseOptions reads os.Args and runs the update check, so a CLI-level test is out of proportion here; New covers that -ad never reads the provider config.

@dogancanbakir Thanks for clarifying. The legacy rename is separate from default provider-config creation. I won’t press for a migration change or a CLI-level test here. The New test covers the provider-config read behavior.

Learning: In projectdiscovery/cloudlist, legacy config.yaml migration in internal/runner/options.go renames an existing user file; it does not create a default provider config. ParseOptions reads os.Args and runs an update check. The maintainer prefers New-level tests for auto-discovery's provider-config read behavior rather than a CLI-level ParseOptions test for that behavior.

Log skipped providers at Warning.

When auto-discovery partially succeeds, internal/runner/autodiscovery.go logs each skipped provider at Info. This violates PR #809’s requirement that skipped providers use Warning. Update the producer and the test assertion to use Warning.
