Proposed Changes

Fixes #2669

Problem

  1. Options Validation: -pr http2 and -pr http3 were documented in flag help (-pr, -protocol string protocol to use (unknown, http11, http2 [experimental], http3 [experimental])), but ValidateOptions() in runner/options.go rejected them with invalid protocol: ....
  2. Missing ALPN: In common/httpx/httpx.go, buildTLSDialer called h.Dialer.DialTLS(ctx, network, addr) without configuring NextProtos. As a result, no ALPN extension was sent on the wire during TLS handshakes, preventing HTTP/2 negotiation and causing CDN bot blocks.
  3. Transport Configuration: The http.Transport was not configured with consistent TLSClientConfig / Protocols for HTTP/2.

Solution

  1. In runner/options.go: Allow http2 and http3 in ValidateOptions().
  2. In common/httpx/httpx.go:
    • Updated buildTLSDialer to construct tls.Config with proper NextProtos based on options.Protocol ([]string{"http/1.1"} for HTTP11, []string{"h2"} for HTTP2, and []string{"h2", "http/1.1"} for default/unknown) and pass it to h.Dialer.DialTLSWithConfig.
    • Wired NextProtos and Protocols on http.Transport instances.
  3. Added unit tests:
    • TestProtocolALPNConfiguration in common/httpx/httpx_test.go verifying NextProtos matches protocol selection.
    • TestProtocolValidation in runner/runner_test.go validating accepted protocols.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added support for selecting http2 and http3 protocol values in configuration.
    • Protocol settings are now accepted regardless of letter casing.
    • TLS connections advertise protocol options based on the selected HTTP protocol, improving negotiation for HTTP/1.1 and HTTP/2.

…tocols

- Allow http2 and http3 in ValidateOptions (-pr/options.Protocol)
- Propagate ALPN NextProtos (h2, http/1.1) in TLS config and pass it to fastdialer DialTLSWithConfig
- Configure transport Protocols and ALPN consistently for HTTP/1.1 and HTTP/2
- Add tests for ALPN configuration and protocol validation

Walkthrough

HTTPX now configures TLS SNI and ALPN based on the selected protocol across its transport paths. Protocol validation also accepts http2 and http3. Tests cover ALPN configuration and accepted or rejected protocol values.

Protocol validation now accepts http2 and http3. HTTPX configures SNI and protocol-specific ALPN on its transports and TLS dialers. Tests check transport ALPN values and protocol validation.

Priority: ➖ Normal

Estimated code review effort: 3 (Moderate) | ~20 minutes

Change: Feature · Severity of issue fixed: Medium

Suggested reviewers: dogancanbakir

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 35600

Default-mode requests to servers that negotiate HTTP/2 can fail instead of completing. This affects a common scanning path, so merge should wait until the advertised protocols match the transport’s enabled handlers.

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 35600

Default negotiation advertises HTTP/2 without enabling it on the main transport. This can activate a separate recovery client that does not inherit the main client's redirect restrictions. That recovery path already existed, but the change makes it relevant to ordinary HTTP/2 negotiation. Deployment impact has not been demonstrated.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · inferred: UNKNOWN and HTTP3 advertise h2 without enabling HTTP/2 on the primary transport. If the resulting HTTP/1 dispatch produces a matching malformed-response error, the dependency reissues the request through a separate default client without HTTPX's redirect callback. This can move ordinary negotiation outside the configured control envelope; other failures can reduce scan coverage. The recovery sink predates this PR and was already triggerable by malicious malformed responses, but the new ALPN advertisement broadens its normal-execution exposure. Alternate dialing behavior and deployment impact remain unresolved.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The material exposure is outbound request scope and scan-result integrity for consumers using default negotiation or HTTP3 fallback. A matching error can reissue the same request through dependency recovery, including any redirect behavior of that separate client. The inspected evidence does not establish tenant-wide or infrastructure-level privilege expansion.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — A peer selecting the newly advertised h2 can leave the default primary transport dispatching HTTP/1 on that connection. Matching malformed-response errors invoke recovery without the primary redirect callback. This is a conditional, source-derived control-drift path, not a runtime-verified exploit; a malicious peer could already trigger the pre-existing recovery path using malformed responses.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — HTTPX passes configured network policy and SNI into its shared fastdialer. The dependency clones the TLS configuration before assigning connection-specific SNI, so repeated or concurrent dialing does not mutate the closure-captured ServerName through this path.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Unrecovered request errors can cause one HTTP/HTTPS scheme switch, update the host-error cache, and return an error result. Without probe output, that result has no display string and is skipped by the ordinary output loop. Thus negotiation failures can affect visible scan coverage and later host attempts rather than remaining isolated handshake errors.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Align advertised ALPN with enabled transport protocols, and preserve configured redirect and connection controls in every recovery client. Validate the complete negotiation-to-recovery transition, including h2 selection and failed requests, rather than only configuration values.

Review comments at @common/httpx/httpx.go:
- Around line 155-157: When Protocol is UNKNOWN, the default transport
advertises HTTP/2 but does not enable its protocol handlers. Update the
transport setup alongside the HTTP2-specific branch to set both HTTP/1 and
HTTP/2 in transport.Protocols for the default case, while preserving the
existing HTTP2-only behavior.
- Around line 210-222: Update the secondary HTTP/2 probe transport so its TLS
dialer advertises HTTP/2 even when the primary options specify HTTP11. In the
secondary transport setup, copy the options, set the copy’s Protocol to HTTP2,
and pass it to buildTLSDialer; leave the primary transport configuration
unchanged.

Review comments at @runner/options.go:
- Line 874: Update protocol handling in New and buildTLSDialer so selecting
http3 logs a warning that it falls back to the default negotiation; preserve the
existing default transport behavior.
- Line 874: Normalize options.Protocol to lowercase before assigning it to
httpxOptions.Protocol at the runner boundary, so accepted mixed-case HTTP11 and
HTTP2 values select the correct protocol-specific settings in httpx.New.

Enable HTTP/2 in the default transport.

When Protocol is UNKNOWN, the primary transport advertises h2 but leaves Protocols nil. Because it uses a custom DialTLSContext and TLSClientConfig, Go 1.26 keeps HTTP/2 disabled. A server that negotiates h2 therefore has no HTTP/2 handler in this transport, and the request can fail.

Suggested fix
 	} else if httpx.Options.Protocol == HTTP2 {
 		var p http.Protocols
 		p.SetHTTP2(true)
 		transport.Protocols = &p
+	} else {
+		var p http.Protocols
+		p.SetHTTP1(true)
+		p.SetHTTP2(true)
+		transport.Protocols = &p
 	}

Add an end-to-end test with an httptest TLS server that has EnableHTTP2 set. Use Protocol: UNKNOWN, then assert that the request succeeds with resp.ProtoMajor == 2.

- Configure secondary transport (client2) with HTTP/2 dialer options so HTTP/2 probes always advertise h2 ALPN
- Log warning when HTTP/3 is selected as it falls back to default TLS negotiation
