Docs: Full doc-set overhaul — stale content, structure, missing operator references - #1423
Conversation
Corrects every claim that no longer matches the code, verified against it: - architecture.md: the initialization/runtime flows and verification tables no longer depict the removed in-pod SPIFFE Helper and Client Registration sidecars (SVIDs are fetched in-process by core/spiffe; registration runs in the operator). proxy-init is described as always-injected (egress guard in proxy-sidecar/lite), not envoy-sidecar-only. Retired 'AuthProxy' name dropped. - framework-architecture.md, plugin-reference.md, cmd/agentop/README.md: the After/Claims relationship fields and the ClaimAuthorizationHeader changelog entry describe a feature that is not in the tree — replaced with the real three fields (Requires, RequiresAny, RequiresLater). on_error is documented as shipped, not 'future'. §11 open questions that contradict shipped body-mutation behavior deleted. Stale cmd/authbridge paths fixed. - CONTRIBUTING.md: PR titles must use capitalized prefixes (lowercase feat:/fix: fail the CI title check); five Go CI jobs, not four; 'Rossoctl Extensions' renamed to Cortex. - plugin-catalog.md: the OpenAI Responses API IS parsed (shipped 2026-10-06); dialects sentence corrected. - cmd/README.md: stats.address, not stats.stats_address. - litellm-budgettrack-plugin.md: references to the nonexistent rossoctl authbridge exec / cortex.py / rossoctlx.py removed. - token-broker-plugin.md: Files table points at the real package layout; same-chain example no longer contradicts its own guidance. - Smaller fixes: seven env variables not three (laptop-token-savings), real release tag (laptop-service), plugin directory convention (plugin-tutorial), extension categories (plugin-reference), orphaned MCP-parser demo section (demos/README), lineage image claims (deploy/lineage-attach), cmd/authbridge-* (core/README). Moved 'Download prebuilt binaries' from architecture.md to CONTRIBUTING.md (with the demo list replaced by a pointer to demos/README.md) so the architecture doc is about architecture. - Every plugin now has its own reference doc. Ten plugins that lived only in the catalog (a2a-parser, context-guru, inference-parser, inference-router, jwt-validation, lineage-telemetry, mcp-parser, opa, static-inject, token-exchange) get docs/<name>-plugin.md; static-inject's and the credential-placeholder-swap's reference material moves out of plugin-reference.md into their plugin docs. plugin-catalog.md becomes a true index (573 -> 244 lines): one summary section per plugin, config detail in the plugin's own file. - litellm-budgettrack-plugin.md renamed to litellm-budget-track-plugin.md to match the plugin's name everywhere else. - The four agent-routing guides move out of cmd/agentop/README.md (1,961 -> 1,554 lines) into docs/agents/ alongside the existing claude-code/codex/opencode guides: any-agent.md (agentop exec), bob.md, bobshell.md; the README keeps the commands and links out. The root README's agent table points at the guides. - 'Deferred to later PRs' roadmap section removed from the agentop README; t (live tail) and o (load older page) added to its keybindings table — both were implemented and in the in-app help but missing from the README. - core/plugins/README.md's table refreshed to all 17 plugins with a current inference-parser description. - 'Download prebuilt binaries' moved from architecture.md to CONTRIBUTING.md; architecture.md's demo list replaced by a pointer to demos/README.md. All 423 relative links and anchors verified resolving. Assisted-By: Claude (Anthropic AI) <noreply@anthropic.com> Signed-off-by: Hai Huang <huang195@gmail.com>
The Kubernetes-operator persona was the one that depended on
CLAUDE.md — AI-assistant context no user reads. This closes those
gaps in the user docs:
- New docs/session-api.md: the complete session-events API reference
— endpoints (incl. the SSE stream and DELETE guards), paging,
archive behavior, the event schema field by field, and the
5-value invocation action vocabulary. Linked from session-dump,
pricing and the agentop README, which held fragments of it.
- mTLS operator configuration (per-mode inbound/outbound tables,
trust model, reload boundary, envoy-sidecar filter chains incl.
the no-in-tree-verification caveat) added to framework-
architecture.md §8a; docs/kubernetes.md no longer links users to
CLAUDE.md.
- Config reference rows that existed nowhere user-facing:
- tls_bridge: all seven fields (laptop-service.md), with the
precise reload behavior — an edit is accepted by the reloader
but the running bridge keeps its startup settings.
- spiffe: socket / mirror_files / mirror_dir (architecture.md).
- listener.skip_hosts (framework-architecture.md), with the
bypass-means-bypass warning.
- listener.roles, inbound_interception, transparent listener
addresses (cmd/README.md).
- session: ttl / max_events / max_sessions / id_headers /
client_affinity / process_attribution (framework-architecture.md).
- docs/README.md rebuilt as a complete index grouped by audience
(laptop / Kubernetes / plugins / operator reference), covering
every doc including agents/ and the new per-plugin files; the
config-section table now points at docs that actually hold the
content, and the self-confessed gaps paragraph is gone. The root
README links the index, which was previously reachable from
nowhere.
All 465 relative links and anchors verified resolving.

- Drop the table one-liner intro from the ten new plugin docs: it duplicated the section's own first paragraph (and context-guru's had leaked a table cell from extraction). - bobshell.md points at bob.md for the editor's settings.json instead of 'below', which no longer follows in a standalone file; static-inject likewise drops a 'below' for the placeholder-swap section that now lives in token-exchange-plugin.md. Qualify the nine-variable claims.
When bundle.crt is absent, execEnv omits the four replacing CA variables. --print then serializes the smaller environment map rather than nine export lines.

Clarify when reverse_proxy_backend is required.
The current wording can imply that transparent interception needs a configured backend. The validator does not require one in that mode because it derives the destination from SO_ORIGINAL_DST.
State that the backend is required only when the reverse role uses reverse-proxy interception. The configuration contract confirms this exception (core/config/validate.go:90-131; core/config/config.go:786-843).

Correct the documented error contract.
The JSON field names and SSE encoding match the implementation. The error descriptions need narrower wording:
error.messageomits the request URL, but it does not always name the address.- Only typed TLS certificate and peer-alert failures use
upstream_tls; other TLS failures can useupstream_error. proxy_erroralso covers oversized request bodies, which produce413, not only oversized response bodies.

Document route overlap and ordering constraints.
token-broker continues when the host is not a broker route. token-exchange also passes through unmatched routes when its default policy is passthrough. Both plugins can therefore share a pipeline when their route sets are disjoint. Overlapping routes require explicit ordering or a single plugin for those hosts.

Update the Token Broker composition guidance to explain that it can share an
outbound pipeline with `token-exchange` when route sets are disjoint and
unmatched routes pass through. Clarify that overlapping routes require choosing
one plugin for those hosts or documenting an explicit plugin order because both
can replace the outbound `Authorization` header.

Describe normal route handling, not guaranteed exchange.
A non-placeholder bearer can follow the default passthrough policy when no route matches, so it does not always run an exchange. State that it continues through normal route and default_policy handling. The supplied core/plugins/tokenexchange/plugin.go context shows the unmatched-route passthrough branch.

pre-d6eb9efa plugin in its overview, use case, diagram, OnResponse
steps, cost-source field names (the removed *_cost_per_token knobs and
their cache-default rule) and consumers paragraph - the plugin loads
the record inference-parser settles, holds no rates and resolves no

paragraph claimed no cost accumulates without LiteLLM's header, but
inference-parser prices token usage from the pricing table.

Limit “cannot tell” to proxy values the command can own.
In cmd/agentop/cmd_bob.go, bobOwns (Lines 282-334) rejects URLs with credentials, a non-root path, a query, or a fragment before checking for an empty target address. Those loopback URLs are classified as not ours, so disable leaves them alone instead of prompting. Qualify “any loopback http proxy” to the bare loopback URL shape that enable writes.

Summary
Clean docs-audit overhaul. Verified the audit's accuracy against the code at HEAD, not just internal consistency: the three hardest-to-verify claims all check out — the PR-title verifier sets prefix_case_sensitive: false and release_notes.sh lowercases before matching (so the corrected case rule is right), and core/reloader/reloader.go's validateReloadable guards mode/listener.*/cost_ledger.*/session.*/mtls.* but not tls_bridge.* (so the "reload accepted but ignored" note is accurate). Every markdown link target introduced by the diff resolves to a file present at HEAD, and the renamed litellm-budget-track-plugin.md exists while the old name is gone. The one Go change is a doc-filename correction with a well-formed regression test (TestConfigErrorNamesExistingDoc).
