What changed?

A failed or cancelled project create now removes the partial project it wrote, keeping a pre-existing empty target folder and the original error.

Why?

Creation should not leave half-written projects behind when it fails or is cancelled.

How was this tested?

  • Create project
  • CTRL + C while running

Fixes #1520

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Failed or canceled project creation now cleans up partial files while preserving pre-existing project files and directories.
    • Project creation completes installation before initializing Git; Git errors no longer remove an otherwise completed project.
    • Canceling a long-running installation now stops the associated process and attempts to clean up its Docker container.
    • Installation progress reports command failures even if the progress display exits early.

Walkthrough

Project creation now tracks the directories it creates and rolls back project contents after eligible failures or cancellation. Docker-based Composer installs use named disposable containers with cleanup handling. The create command initializes Git and prints its completion summary after installation.

Changes: Project creation lifecycle

Layer / File(s) Summary
Project-folder lifecycle
internal/shop/project_creation.go, internal/shop/project_creation_test.go
ProjectFolder validates and prepares a target path, records directories created during preparation, and removes generated contents during rollback. Tests cover invalid paths, existing files, unrelated siblings, and cleanup logging.
Managed project scaffolding
internal/shop/project_scaffold.go, internal/shop/project_scaffold_test.go, cmd/project/project_create_scaffold.go
ScaffoldWithCleanup prepares and returns a ProjectFolder, and rolls it back after preparation or generation errors. The project command’s scaffold helper returns the folder. Tests cover failure cleanup for new, empty, and non-empty directories.
Cancelable install execution
internal/executor/docker_run.go, internal/executor/docker_run_test.go, cmd/project/project_create_install.go, internal/tui/progress_spinner.go, internal/tui/progress_spinner_test.go
DockerRunCommand adds forced cleanup for named containers. Composer installation uses its completion handler. The progress spinner waits for the command and cancels it when rendering exits. Tests cover cancellation and command and cleanup errors.
Create-command rollback and finalization
cmd/project/project_create.go, cmd/project/project_create_install.go
The create command rolls back the scaffolded folder after eligible installation failures or cancellation. Git initialization runs after installation. The creation summary prints after the creation steps complete.

  • Issue 1520: The changes add rollback for project creation after cancellation or eligible failure, addressing the reported leftover files and directories.

Suggested reviewers: moshimorschi, tturkowski

Merge Risk: Low · up to 13c4e

The change is mergeable with awareness of a narrow race: if another process adds a file to the project folder during creation, cancellation or failure can delete it.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description covers what changed, why it changed, testing performed, and the related issue. The testing section is brief and does not mention automated test or lint results, but the required information is mostly complete.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The project-folder lifecycle, scaffold rollback, Docker cancellation cleanup, progress-spinner changes, command-flow changes, and tests support rollback for issue #1520. No unrelated change is established by the reviewed evidence.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue #1520 requires rollback after a canceled or failed project create. The normal scaffold and installation paths call folder.Rollback, and tests cover created and pre-existing folders. However, projectCreateCmd returns immediately when installAndFinalize returns executor.ErrDockerCleanup. That path can leave the partial project in place, so rollback is not guaranteed.

Resolution

Call folder.Rollback for executor.ErrDockerCleanup failures as well. Preserve the installation error and Docker cleanup error when returning the result.

This looks fine already, I have not run into any issues. Here we could also still consider to fix these things from my reporter, especially the first one:

  • ctrl+c during a docker install leaves shop/vendor behind. only the docker client gets killed, the composer container keeps extracting while we delete. happens when ctrl+c lands during package extraction (~5s into a warm install here, 5 of 6 runs in that phase, same with SIGTERM).
observed: cannot remove partially created project in shop: unlinkat .../vendor/composer/.../storefront/vendor: directory not empty, vendor stays, next project create shop --docker says "exists already and is not empty". same with project create .
desired: kill the container before removing the folder (--name + docker kill on cancel), then the re-run just works

  • a failure after composer deletes the finished install. --git with no git on PATH or a typo in ~/.gitconfig: 20s install (minutes cold), then git init fails and the whole project is gone. main kept it, just without the repo.
desired: check git before writing anything, or keep the project when a post-install step fails

  • "Removed partially created project" when nothing was created. project create /opt/shop without write access prints the removed line and then mkdir /opt/shop: permission denied.
    desired: just the error

  • parent folders stay. project create clients/acme/shop leaves clients/acme/ after a failure, only shop is gone.
desired: remove what the run created

No documentation update needed. This is a bug fix in the CLI (cmd/project, internal/shop, internal/executor, internal/tui, plus tests). It cleans up partially created projects when project create fails or is cancelled. It adds no commands, flags or config keys, and nothing in the shopware/docs pages on shopware-cli project create describes failure or cancel behavior that this contradicts.
