Description

Adds a new pressOutAfterAnimation boolean prop to Touchable (default false). When set and the platform deferred the press, onPressOut is held until the press-in animation (animationDuration) has played, the same moment the native press-out animation starts. onPress is not delayed, so on such taps the order is onPressIn, onPress, onPressOut, as in RN. A press the platform did not defer keeps its native timing. Pressable sets the prop and a 130 ms press-in to match RN's minPressDuration.

Test plan

Tested on the following code:
import React, { useRef, useState } from 'react';
import { Animated, StyleSheet, Text, View } from 'react-native';
import { ScrollView, Touchable } from 'react-native-gesture-handler';

// `pressOutAfterAnimation` (#4515): both cards drive a custom scale animation from
// onPressIn/onPressOut, inside a scrolling container. Tap them as briefly as you can.
// "animated" counts the taps whose press-in animation ran to completion: Android presses
// a quick tap on the UP, so without the prop onPressOut cancels the animation right away;
// with the prop onPressOut waits until the press-in animation (animationDuration) has played.
const ANIMATION_MS = 80;

function AnimatedCard({ withProp }: { withProp: boolean }) {
  const [taps, setTaps] = useState(0);
  const [animated, setAnimated] = useState(0);
  const scale = useRef(new Animated.Value(1)).current;

  const animateTo = (value: number, onDone?: () => void) =>
    Animated.timing(scale, {
      toValue: value,
      duration: ANIMATION_MS,
      useNativeDriver: true,
    }).start(({ finished }) => finished && onDone?.());

  return (
    <Touchable
      animationDuration={ANIMATION_MS}
      pressOutAfterAnimation={withProp}
      onPressIn={() => animateTo(0.94, () => setAnimated((n) => n + 1))}

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added an optional pressOutAfterAnimation setting for buttons and touchables. When enabled, a deferred press-out callback waits until the press-in animation finishes; the press callback is not delayed and may occur first. The setting is off by default.

Walkthrough

The change adds the pressOutAfterAnimation option to the button and Touchable APIs. On Android, it can delay PressOut after a platform-deferred press until the press-in animation finishes. PressableWithTouchable enables the option and sets a 130 ms tap-in duration.

The button and Touchable APIs add the optional pressOutAfterAnimation prop, defaulting to false. Touchable forwards the prop to GestureHandlerButton.
Android deferred press-out dispatch
packages/react-native-gesture-handler/android/src/main/java/com/swmansion/gesturehandler/react/RNGestureHandlerButtonViewManager.kt
Android tracks platform-deferred presses. When enabled and press-in animation time remains, it schedules PressOut. It dispatches immediately when those conditions are not met. Re-entry, a new gesture, and detachment flush a pending event. A held InteractionFinished event dispatches after PressOut.
PressableWithTouchable timing
packages/react-native-gesture-handler/src/v3/components/PressableWithTouchable.tsx
PressableWithTouchable sets a 130 ms tap-in duration and enables pressOutAfterAnimation. Its comment describes the possible ordering of onPress and onPressOut for deferred quick taps.

On Android devices using a non-default animation scale, deferred press feedback can end out of sync with the native animation. This is a localized visual-timing issue; the change is otherwise mergeable with follow-up.

🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Preserve pending PressOut events across transient detachment.

When dispatchPressOut() holds a deferred event, onDetachedFromWindow() removes its callback and clears its reference. Fabric can detach and reinsert this view during the hold. The re-entry path then has no pending event to flush, so JavaScript may never receive the matching PressOut. Retain or dispatch the event instead of discarding it.

I'm not a fan of the name of this prop, though I cannot say what exactly feels wrong. Maybe something along the lines of delayPressOutForAnimation?

Not a blocker. We can also brainstorm later.

I'd suggest delayPressOutUntilAnimationEnds, but delayPressOutForAnimation sounds ok. We can decide later.

I feel like we should delay this as well if we're delaying onPressOut, no?

## Description

`iOS` half of #4568. Inside `ScrollView` UIKit holds the touch for
`delaysContentTouches` until it rules out a scroll, and a tap released
within that window gets `touchesBegan` and `touchesEnded` delivered
together, so `onPressIn` and `onPressOut` reach JS in one batch and
feedback driven from them never shows.

With `pressOutAfterAnimation`, a press deferred that way holds
`onPressOut` until the press-in animation (`animationDuration`) has
played, the same moment the native press-out animation starts. `onPress`
is not delayed. A press UIKit did not defer keeps its native timing;
RN's own lists turn `delaysContentTouches` off, so they are unaffected.
