Summary

  • The generated OpenAPI 3.0.3 spec describes the JSON the proxy writes and the query keys it reads.

Changes

  • google.protobuf.NullValue in bodies and responses (singular, oneof member, list item, map value) is JSON null: {nullable: true, enum: [null]}, since OpenAPI 3.0.3 has no null type and nullable without type constrains nothing. In path and query parameters it is the enum name NULL_VALUE, which the parameter parser reads. Same defect as fix(openapiv3): emit google.protobuf.NullValue fields as null grpc-ecosystem/grpc-gateway#7541.
  • Object properties are keyed by the field's JSON name (displayName), which responses use; requests accept both spellings.
  • Query parameters are one per leaf field, named by the dotted proto path the parser reads (filter.q). Well-known types with a string form (Timestamp, Duration, FieldMask, wrappers, Value) are one parameter, repeated ones one value per repeated key; other messages are walked field by field. Maps and repeated messages without a string form, which a query string cannot set, are not listed.
  • google.protobuf.UInt64Value is format: uint64.
  • A response_body path that names no field is described as only null.

Clients generated from the spec see camelCase property names for multi-word fields, matching the responses they already receive.

Testing

Sample messages covering every scalar, enum, well-known type, oneof member, list and map go through the unary response serializer and are validated against the generated schema. fmt, clippy, the full test suite and doc tests pass.

Closes #148

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • OpenAPI schemas now use protobuf JSON property names and distinguish JSON body and response schemas from parameter schemas.
    • Message-valued query parameters expand into dotted leaf parameters, while recursive message types avoid infinite expansion. Maps and repeated messages are omitted; messages with ProtoJSON string forms remain single parameters.
    • Null values in JSON bodies are represented as null, while query parameters retain their enum representation. Missing response bodies are constrained to null.
    • Corrected uint64 formatting and ensured map value schemas follow the applicable encoding.

OpenAPI generation now distinguishes JSON body and response schemas from path and query parameter schemas. Message properties use protobuf JSON names. Query generation expands supported message fields into dotted parameters. Tests validate serialized protobuf messages against generated schemas.

Changes: OpenAPI schema generation and validation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Encoding-aware schemas
src/openapi.rs, src/transcode/request.rs, src/transcode/request/presence.rs
Schema generation distinguishes JSON and parameter encodings. Message properties use protobuf JSON names. JSON NullValue schemas permit only null, missing response-body fields are constrained to null, and map values inherit their field encoding. Parameter schemas retain NullValue enum representation and use a string schema for google.protobuf.Value. Well-known-message detection uses has_special_json, and UInt64Value uses the uint64 format.
Recursive query parameter generation
src/openapi.rs
Query parameters use dotted paths for supported message leaves. Generation omits bound fields, maps, repeated messages, and recursive message types. Messages with string forms remain single parameters.
Fixture and schema validation
src/openapi/tests.rs, src/transcode/mod.rs
The test fixture adds protobuf descriptors and HTTP bindings and shares descriptor-pool construction. Tests cover query parameter selection, JSON property names, null representations, well-known messages, and serialized Wire messages validated against generated schemas. json_body is crate-visible.

The generated OpenAPI spec may list a query parameter for repeated string-form message fields that the proxy does not accept. The impact is limited to spec accuracy. Otherwise the change looks safe to merge.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue #148 requires response schemas to match serialized JSON and requires NullValue query parameters to retain NULL_VALUE. The changes use JSON field names, represent body and response NullValue as {nullable: true, enum: [null]}, preserve the parameter enum, and constrain an empty response_body to null. every_response_validates_against_its_schema checks serialized fixtures, wire keys, references, arrays, maps, and scalar formats.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changes remain within the stated OpenAPI generation scope. Recursive query-parameter documentation, UInt64Value formatting, well-known JSON handling, and the visibility changes support accurate schema generation or its automated tests. No unrelated change is shown, and no files were excluded from review.

- google.protobuf.NullValue fields (singular, oneof member, list item,
  map value) are documented as JSON null ({nullable: true, enum: [null]};
  OpenAPI 3.0.3 has no null type) instead of the string NULL_VALUE;
path and query parameters keep the enum name the parser reads
- object properties are keyed by the field's JSON name, which responses
  use; requests accept both spellings
- google.protobuf.UInt64Value is format uint64, not int64
- a response_body path naming no field is described as only null
- a test serializes sample messages through the unary response path and
validates them against the generated schema

Closes #148
- a field below a message-typed query field is its own parameter named
by the dotted path the query parser reads (filter.q), typed as the
leaf, instead of an object parameter whose $ref pointed at the JSON
body schema; a nested NullValue is now NULL_VALUE there, not null
- maps and repeated messages, which a query string cannot set, are no
longer listed; a message already on the way is not entered again
- the schema/wire test also checks a message with every field default

Regression tests: message_typed_query_field_is_one_parameter_per_leaf,
query_parameters_are_the_keys_the_parser_reads, and the nested case in
null_value_is_json_null_in_bodies_and_a_name_in_parameters.
- a query parameter is a whole well-known type only when the parser can
read it from one string (Timestamp, Duration, FieldMask, wrappers,
Value); Any, Struct, ListValue and Empty are walked like any message,
so Any shows payload.type_url and payload.value and ListValue shows
  its repeated values
- a Value read from a query string is documented as a string

Regression test: query_parameters_are_the_keys_the_parser_reads.
Every google.protobuf message was handled as a well-known type by its
package prefix, so an ordinary one such as SourceContext was an empty
object in bodies and a single query parameter. Well-known now means
the types ProtoJSON writes in their own form, the same list the request
parser reads by; a query parameter is a whole message only for the
explicit list of types with a string form.

Regression tests: an_ordinary_google_protobuf_message_has_its_own_schema
and the SourceContext case in query_parameters_are_the_keys_the_parser_reads.
A repeated well-known type with a string form (repeated Timestamp,
ListValue.values) is set from the query one value per repeated key, so
it stays a documented parameter. A test now checks that the spec
describes it as an array and that the parser binds every value, and the
comments say which repeated messages a query string cannot set.
