fix(llamaindex): import llama_index.llms lazily so the package loads with only llama-index-core - #4698
Fixes the LlamaIndex import problem listed under "Related problems" in #4689. That issue's instruments metadata mismatch is being handled separately, and this PR doesn't touch it.
Problem
custom_llm_instrumentor.py runs import llama_index.llms at module level. llama_index.llms is a namespace package that only exists once some llama-index-llms-* integration is installed. With only llama-index-core installed, importing opentelemetry.instrumentation.llamaindex fails:
ModuleNotFoundError: No module named 'llama_index.llms'
Traceloop.init() swallows this in a try/except, so the user just gets no LlamaIndex spans and no error.
Fix
Remove the module-level import llama_index.llms.
Import it lazily in CustomLLMInstrumentor.instrument() (the only place it's used). When it's missing, there are no custom LLM classes to wrap, so instrument() returns early.
Hoist MODULE_NAME, which was the same in both branches of the try/except.
There's no behavior change when an LLM integration is installed.
Tests
New tests/test_custom_llm_lazy_import.py hides llama_index.llms with a meta-path finder (simulating a llama-index-core-only environment). It then imports the instrumentation and calls CustomLLMInstrumentor.instrument(). It runs in a subprocess so the hidden package can't leak into other tests.
The new test fails on main with No module named 'llama_index.llms' and passes with this change.
Full package suite: 272 passed (Python 3.12). ruff check is clean.
I have added tests that cover my changes.
If adding a new instrumentation or changing an existing one, I've added screenshots from some observability platform showing the change. — N/A: this is an import-time fix with no change to emitted spans.
PR name follows conventional commits format: feat(instrumentation): ... or fix(instrumentation): ....
(If applicable) I have updated the documentation accordingly. — N/A
The LlamaIndex instrumentation can now be loaded when its LLM integrations are unavailable. In that case, instrumentation is skipped, allowing applications to start without those integrations. Missing dependencies elsewhere are still reported rather than silently ignored.
Tests
Added coverage for loading without LLM integrations and for reporting errors when an installed integration has a missing dependency.
…with only llama-index-core
llama_index.llms is a namespace package that only exists once a
llama-index-llms-* integration is installed. Importing it at module load
time made the whole instrumentation package fail to import for users who
only have llama-index-core. Import it inside CustomLLMInstrumentor.instrument()
and skip when it is missing.

Walkthrough
The instrumentor now imports llama_index.llms when instrument() runs. It returns if that namespace is missing and re-raises ModuleNotFoundError for other missing modules. Subprocess tests cover both cases.
Changes: LlamaIndex LLM lazy import
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Defer the LLM namespace import packages/opentelemetry-instrumentation-llamaindex/opentelemetry/instrumentation/llamaindex/custom_llm_instrumentor.py, packages/opentelemetry-instrumentation-llamaindex/tests/test_custom_llm_lazy_import.py
MODULE_NAME is defined independently of the CustomLLM import fallback. instrument() imports llama_index.llms when called, returns if the namespace is missing, and re-raises errors for other missing modules. Subprocess tests cover both cases.
traceloop/openllmetry#4689: The change defers the llama_index.llms import. The issue’s separate instruments metadata mismatch is not addressed.

Re-raise ModuleNotFoundError for any other missing module so a broken
LLM integration stays diagnosable, add a regression test for it, and
add docstrings.
@doronkopit5 could you take a look when you have a moment? This covers the llamaindex lazy-import item from #4689, which you reported. The instruments metadata mismatch from that issue is left for the separate fix. CodeRabbit's feedback is addressed, and all checks are green. Thanks!
