Description

Passes --prefer-high-performance-adapter to recordly-gpu-export.exe in buildExperimentalWindowsGpuStaticLayoutArgs (electron/ipc/export/native-video.ts). With that flag the native compositor uses the non-DXVA Media Foundation source reader (MF_SOURCE_READER_DISABLE_DXVA) and selects the high-performance adapter (see electron/native/gpu-export-probe/src/main.cpp).

Also included:

  • a unit test asserting the flag is passed (native-video.test.ts, 77/77 passing)
  • scripts/windows-export-workaround/ (asar patch scripts + README) for users on already-installed builds. This folder is optional and can be dropped from the PR if maintainers prefer to keep only the source fix and test.

Motivation

On Windows with an AMD GPU, static-layout exports through recordly-gpu-export.exe loop earlier footage instead of advancing. Disabling DXVA decode in the compositor via this flag fixes it.

A separate issue on the same machine, the auto backend's WebGPU/D3D12 hang (DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_HUNG, 0x887A0006), is worked around in the optional script by forcing the Breeze backend; it is not changed in source here.

N/A (export output fix, no UI change).

Testing Guide

  • Reporter-tested and confirmed: I (the reporter) tested and confirmed the fix on Windows / Recordly 1.4.0 / Ryzen 5 PRO 5650U with integrated Radeon graphics, using an equivalent app.asar patch that adds the same flag to the compositor args. Re-exported footage no longer loops.
  • Unit test: npx vitest run electron/ipc/export/native-video.test.ts
  • Manual: on an affected Windows/AMD machine, export an MP4 with the Breeze/native static-layout path and confirm the output plays through without repeating earlier footage.

Checklist

  • I have performed a self-review of my code.
  • I have added any necessary screenshots or videos.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Updates
    • Windows GPU exports now request the high-performance graphics adapter.
  • Documentation
    • Added guidance for checking, applying, and reverting Windows export adjustments in installed builds.
    • The guidance covers supported installation paths and notes that adjustments may need to be reapplied after updates.

…ing exports on AMD

Pass --prefer-high-performance-adapter to recordly-gpu-export.exe so the
static-layout export decodes via the non-DXVA Media Foundation source reader.
On an affected AMD GPU the DXVA path made exported video loop earlier footage.

Also add scripts/windows-export-workaround/ for users on installed builds.

Walkthrough

The Windows GPU exporter now includes --prefer-high-performance-adapter. The PR also adds ASAR inspection and patching tools, plus PowerShell scripts to apply, verify, and revert installed-build patches.

Changes: Windows GPU Export and Installed-Build Patching

Layer / File(s) Summary
GPU exporter argument
electron/ipc/export/native-video.ts, electron/ipc/export/native-video.test.ts
The Windows GPU exporter adds --prefer-high-performance-adapter. A test checks that the generated compositor arguments include it.
ASAR reading and repacking
scripts/windows-export-workaround/asar-pack.js
The helper reads packed and unpacked archive entries, repacks packed data, retains the original header padding length, and computes entry digests and patch-anchor locations.
Archive inspection and patch operations
scripts/windows-export-workaround/asar-pack.js
The helper adds info, identity, probe, autopatch, and verify modes for inspecting archive structure, classifying patch state, applying anchored substitutions, and comparing archive entries.
Backend-only patch lifecycle
scripts/windows-export-workaround/recordly-export-patch.ps1
The script configures the auto-to-breeze substitution and provides status, apply, and revert operations with archive verification and backups.
Two-patch lifecycle and instructions
scripts/windows-export-workaround/recordly-export-patch-v2.ps1, scripts/windows-export-workaround/README.md
The v2 script configures the backend substitution and the GPU compositor argument substitution. It provides status, apply, and revert operations. The README documents both scripts, their requirements, and usage.

Use a replacer function for arbitrary PATCHES_JSON values.

asar-pack.js accepts caller-supplied repl strings. Passing the string directly to replace interprets $&, $$, $`` and $', which can silently change a supported custom patch payload. The shipped PowerShell patches contain no $` sequences, so they are unaffected.

Correct the claim that the source fix replaces both patches.

The source change adds only --prefer-high-performance-adapter. This replaces the gpu-compositor-no-looping patch. The export-backend patch (forcing Breeze to avoid DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_HUNG) is not in the source change, according to the PR description. After the source fix ships, users who hit the hang still need that patch.

Say that the source fix replaces only the compositor-looping patch.

Require a rehearsal copy and reject the installed archive.

-Rehearse currently uses the live default archive when -AsarPath is omitted. It also accepts the installed archive when passed explicitly. Apply and revert then bypass the process and elevation checks and can overwrite the live archive.

Restore the backup if the copy into app.asar fails.

$ErrorActionPreference is Stop. If Copy-Item $staged $Asar -Force fails part way (disk full, antivirus lock, sharing violation), the script throws immediately. The restore code on Lines 230-233 does not run. app.asar can then stay truncated, and Recordly will not start. The user must find the backup and run -Mode revert manually.

Wrap the overwrite in try/catch and restore the backup in the catch block.

Bind revert to the archive produced by the latest apply.

An Applied probe only checks content anchors. An updated archive that already contains both patched anchors also reports Applied, even when it did not produce the selected backup. Sorting by Name changes order only. It does not establish the backup's identity.

Record the backup name, original hash, and patched hash during -Mode apply. During -Mode revert, restore only when the current archive hash matches the recorded patched hash and the selected backup matches the recorded original hash. Otherwise, refuse the restore. This also handles a v1-then-v2 sequence because v2 records the v1 archive that it actually replaced.

PATCH 2 - encoder probe resolution
Why: encoder selection probes each candidate with a 64x64 @ 1 fps test
encode. AMD's AMF encoder rejects that size ("encoder->Init() failed with
error 5"), so selection always falls through to Media Foundation even
though h264_amf is present and faster (measured: 6.86x vs 6.33x realtime).
64x64 @ 1fps -> 1280x720 @ 30fps
Ug(64,64) buffer -> Ug(1280,720) buffer
Verified that h264_amf accepts a 1280x720 RGBA rawvideo frame on stdin.

Remove or correct the header text for PATCH 2.

Line 4 says the script rewires two things. Lines 16-23 describe an encoder-probe patch. The $Patches array at Line 68 contains only export-backend. Lines 37-41 then say the probe rewiring was tried and reverted.

A user who reads the header expects -Mode apply to change the encoder probe, but it does not. Remove the PATCH 2 block and change "TWO things" to one. If PATCH 2 stays as a record of what was tried, move it into the "NOT PATCHED" section.

Require rehearsal to target a separate archive copy.

-Rehearse leaves $Asar set to the installed archive when -AsarPath is omitted. It also accepts the installed default path when supplied explicitly. Because rehearsal bypasses the process and elevation checks, apply and revert can then copy directly to the live archive. Require an explicit copy path and reject the installed path.

Restore the backup if any step after the Copy-Item fails.

$ErrorActionPreference is 'Stop'. If Copy-Item $staged $Asar -Force fails part-way, the script throws. This can happen on a disk-full error, an antivirus lock, or a sharing violation. The restore at Line 219 and Line 225 runs only on hash mismatch or a failed probe. It does not run when an exception is thrown. app.asar can then stay truncated in Program Files. The user must find the .bak file and restore it by hand.

Wrap the replace-and-verify block in try/catch. Restore the backup in the catch block and rethrow.

Tie revert to the patched archive identity.

Invoke-Revert selects a backup by LastWriteTime and copies it over app.asar without checking that the current archive belongs to the same patched build. An intervening update or unrelated archive can therefore be replaced with an older backup.

Persist the patched archive hash and its backup hash during Invoke-Apply. During Invoke-Revert, restore only the backup whose metadata matches the current archive hash, then verify the restored hash. A probe guard is useful but cannot establish that the selected backup belongs to the current build.

The proposed guard must also reject unknown states:
