Flag commands and options not in the latest stable release - #668
Conversation
The handbook is generated from the nightly build, so it can document commands and options that are not released yet (e.g. `wp block`). `wp handbook gen-commands` / `gen-all` now accept `--stable-phar=<path>`. When given, the generator dumps the commands of the stable Phar and adds a note to every command page that is missing from it, or that documents options missing from it, pointing to the nightly build. Commands that already accepted arbitrary options in the stable release are not flagged for newly documented options. Unreleased commands are also marked with `"unreleased": true` in the commands manifest. The regenerate workflow downloads the latest stable Phar and passes it. See #666. Avoids loading the handbook's wp-cli.yml (and with it the handbook's Composer autoloader) into the stable Phar, and keeps PHP notices out of the JSON output of `cli cmd-dump`. followed by a stable semantic version, rejecting prerelease suffixes and other

Comparing against a nightly Phar would silently drop the notes. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com> Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01RVPkwDuM5DHXdSF4YW4qqr
"Not available in the latest stable release (2.12.0)" reads as if the command should be in 2.12.0. Say it's not part of a stable release yet instead, which also keeps flagged pages from changing on every release. Nightly synopses can declare option aliases, e.g. `[--dbpass|db_password=<dbpass>]`. Treat every alias as an option name, so a newly added alias like `config create --db_password` is flagged as unreleased as well. The handbook is generated from the nightly build, so it documents commands and options that haven't been released yet, such as
wp block. Readers aren't told this. This PR keeps nightly as the source and marks anything that isn't in the latest stable release. How it works
wp handbook gen-allandwp handbook gen-commandsaccept a new option,--stable-phar=<path>.cli versionandcli cmd-dumpwith that Phar. It runs them outside the handbook directory, so the handbook'swp-cli.ymlisn't loaded. It then compares each generated page against the stable command tree:--format. …"). Option names come from the synopsis, parsed withSynopsisParser.[--<field>=<value>], e.g.wp post list) are not flagged for newly documented options, since those options probably worked already.cmd-dumpdoesn't output aliases, so a new alias can't be detected on its own."unreleased": trueincommands-manifest.json. The website could use this to show a badge on the commands index. The manifest reads it from the generated Markdown, so the separate Regenerate Manifest workflow keeps it too.wp-cli.phar(stable) and passes it to the generator. Prerelease Phars are rejected as the stable reference. The non-bundled packages (admin, find, profile, dist-archive) are loaded from
bin/packagesfor both builds, so they are never flagged. The notes go away on the first regeneration after a release, with no manual cleanup.Without
--stable-phar, the output is unchanged.Testing
I ran the generator locally against nightly (3.0.0-alpha) and stable 2.12.0. The non-bundled package check was disabled for that run because GitHub package downloads were blocked in my environment. Results:
block,ability,ai,font,icon,site-health,post block, post revisionanduser privacy-request.core update --format, againstwp helpfrom stable.--stable-pharfails with "Not a stable WP-CLI release".--stable-phar, no notes are added.A follow-up PR stacked on this one, #669, adds "Available since" information.
