1.8.2 has a security issue and several data and runtime problems.
Security. A crafted database file could influence SQLite Explorer's VS Code notifications. Details are withheld until 1.8.3 is released.
TEXT containing NUL was cut short. The WebAssembly engine cut it at the first NUL when binding, for example in an import, and when reading in the query console. The native engine cut it on synchronous reads.
TEXT with an unpaired surrogate lost its end on the WebAssembly engine. Binding '\uD83D中文' through 1.8.2's glue stores EDA0BDE4B8AD, dropping 文 (measured on the v1.8.2 vendor/sql.js build).
The native export snapshot exception was connection-wide. 1.8.2's permitAttach(path) applied to the next statement prepared on the connection, including one queued before it. The worker's statement guard and its one-request-at-a-time order kept other SQL from using it.
A WITHOUT ROWID row whose key contains NUL was read-only with "exceeds the 838860-byte inline limit" as the reason.
Native snapshot failures, such as a failed Save As, reported the generic text of SQLite's error code, such as "SQL logic error", instead of SQLite's message.
Solution
Notification text (src/notificationText.ts): text that comes from a database file is sanitized before VS Code shows it in a notification, modal message, progress title or message, input box prompt or validation message, or as an undo label. Errors that the custom editor provider, the virtual file system provider, the commands and the undo/redo callbacks hand back to VS Code are sanitized the same way and keep their class.
NUL in TEXT:
The WebAssembly build takes upstream sql.js #634, which reads and binds TEXT by length.
The native runtime (zknpr/txiki.js) reads synchronously by length.
The grid keeps showing NUL-containing TEXT as bytes on both engines, and the external cell editor refuses it with the Hex inspector message, as for other TEXT it cannot show byte for byte. The same rule covers WITHOUT ROWID keys, whose read-only reason names the NUL.
Unpaired surrogates: the sql.js fork (35ac205) binds TEXT with the byte count stringToUTF8 actually writes, and throws if the counts differ. The stored bytes now match the native engine's.
Export snapshot: the native worker calls the runtime's vacuumInto(path). It runs a fixed VACUUM main INTO ? and accepts the destination only on the thread running that call, only while it runs.
Runtime follow-ups (txiki.js b45ac83, from a review of 9875455):
a statement whose rows fail to convert is reset instead of left running;
synchronous row conversion checks every step;
vacuumInto errors carry SQLite's message;
the authorizer calls uv_thread_self only for ATTACH of a named file;
the exception's invariant is documented.
CI:native-fuzz.yml runs the native ATTACH/DETACH/VACUUM INTO differential fuzz on all five native targets, on dev pushes and pull requests to dev that change the harness, the runtimes, the worker client, the toolchain or the workflow.
Architecture
Provider and command wrappers.withPlainErrors(provider, methods) returns a proxy. Listed methods run on the real provider and rethrow through the sanitizer. Every other function is bound to the provider, so private fields and event properties keep working, and absent optional methods stay absent, which VS Code uses to detect capabilities. The method lists are checked against vscode.CustomEditorProvider and vscode.FileSystemProvider at compile time. plainErrors does the same for command handlers and the undo/redo callbacks. Errors are changed in place, so vscode.CancellationError, vscode.FileSystemError and a DOMException such as an aborted save's AbortError keep their identity, name and code; only an error whose message cannot be changed (a frozen one) is replaced by a plain Error with it as cause. Sanitizing is idempotent, so an error rethrown through a wrapper again does not change further.
Enforcement.notification_links.test.ts parses src/ with the TypeScript compiler. Every notification message and detail, progress title and report message, input box and quick pick prompt, validateInput return value and undo label must be a literal, l10n.t of a literal, a conditional or concatenation of those, or a sanitized value; concatenations may not contain a sanitized part. Options must be written in place, vscode.window and the checked functions may only be used directly, and every registerCommand, registerTextEditorCommand, registerCustomEditorProvider, registerFileSystemProvider and undo/redo callback must use the wrappers. The same test runs the check over a list of code shapes it must report, and over a compliant list it must accept.
Scoped snapshot exception. The authorizer refuses ATTACH and DETACH on every connection, except '' and the destination of a running vacuumInto, on the thread running it. Acceptance means "this thread, during this call". That equals "this statement" because nothing SQLite calls back into during the VACUUM can compile SQL on the connection: no SQL functions, hooks or busy handler are registered, and the progress callback runs no SQL. The runtime comment states this invariant. Acceptance is not one-shot, because sqlite3_step re-prepares a VACUUM after SQLITE_SCHEMA and authorizes a new internal ATTACH of the same target.
Per-file changes
File
Change
src/notificationText.ts
New: the notification text sanitizer and the plainErrors / withPlainErrors wrappers.
Notification, modal, progress and input texts with non-literal parts are sanitized. The import and query-console commands are registered through plainErrors. The host's toast helper calls VS Code directly and sanitizes its message and detail.
src/databaseModel.ts
Notification texts are sanitized; the undo/redo callbacks run through plainErrors and the undo label is sanitized.
src/editorController.ts
The custom editor provider is registered through withPlainErrors for its six VS Code-facing methods.
src/main.ts
The refresh and export commands are registered through plainErrors, and the virtual file system provider through withPlainErrors.
src/virtualFileSystem.ts
Notification texts are sanitized; the external editor's read and write checks use the grid's NUL rule.
src/core/cell-containment.ts
One NUL rule for cells, WITHOUT ROWID keys and the external editor (decodedTextReproduces). The key reason names the NUL.
src/nativeWorker.ts
Exports getNativeBinaryPath for the fuzz lane.
natives/native-worker.js
Snapshots through vacuumInto. The permit bookkeeping is removed.
NUL and surrogate bytes on both engines, NUL keys, the external editor's NUL refusal, and the vacuumInto snapshot.
package.json, package-lock.json, CHANGELOG.md
1.8.3.
Security
Notification text (fixed). Details are withheld until 1.8.3 is released.
Snapshot exception (narrowed). In 1.8.2 the exception was connection-wide while an export ran. It is now scoped to the call and its thread. The five-target fuzz against this runtime (run 40095348078 at this head) found no attached database or file write.
Snapshot error messages. These now quote names from the database, such as a collation. They reach VS Code only through the sanitizer.
Test plan
Run on macOS arm64 unless noted.
npm test: 2597/2597. npm run test:native-smoke: 112/112 with the b45ac83 binary. tsc --noEmit, node scripts/build.mjs (regenerated output committed) and build-query-plan.mjs --check are clean.
Failing before, passing after: each fix has a test that fails without it.
Notification text: export, query console, editor-provider save, undo and redo, error identity (DOMException, sealed and frozen errors) and idempotency.
The call-site check: the scan of src/, plus a list of code shapes it must report.
The external editor's NUL refusal, and the fuzz harness's placeholder binding.
raw_text_transport (surrogates) fails on sql.js 7245c26's glue and passes on 35ac205's, with the native engine's bytes as the expected values. The NUL-key tests fail before c6f49f8 and pass after, on WebAssembly and on the real native binary.
GUI in VS Code 1.110.0 (verified from runtime.json) with VSIXs packaged at this head:
native backend, sqlite-explorer-darwin-arm64-1.8.3.vsix (sha256 d1b253f3…): npm run test:gui 26/26 (open, edit, Undo/Redo, views, query console, import, export, settings, external replacement); test:gui:lifecycle cases save-as and hot-exit, A01–A03 and H01–H03, pass.
WebAssembly backend, sqlite-explorer-1.8.3.vsix (sha256 b1bc4569…): npm run test:gui 26/26.
Native runtime b45ac83: Actions run 40086152581 passed the SQLite contract tests, including the new row-conversion test, on all five targets. Locally, an AddressSanitizer build ran the seven SQLite contract tests cleanly, and a mutant that skips the clear on failure makes the new cleanup checks fail.
Native fuzz: run 40095348078 at this head passed on all five targets, each with 40,000 statements, 39,990 distinct and 0 traces. The same numbers locally on aarch64-macos.
Codex reviewed this head with no findings.
Not run:
GUI on Linux or Windows;
the other GUI suites (grid, cells, edges, sharing, progress, interactions, contention, uploads);
The sql.js build truncated TEXT at the first NUL when reading it and when
binding it, so a value such as 'c\0d' from an import was stored as 'c',
and exports and the query console read 'a\0b' as 'a'. Rebuild from the
fork with upstream #634 re-applied (zknpr/sql.js 7245c26), which reads
and binds TEXT by length. Only the JavaScript glue changes; the .wasm and
the five native query-plan libraries are byte-identical.
1.8.2 reverted #634 because the grid would then show NUL-containing TEXT
as a string on WebAssembly and as bytes on native. The grid now treats any
TEXT containing NUL as bytes whatever an engine returns
(decodedTextReproducesBytes, shared by both containment checks), so the
display is the same on every engine and connection. The native runtime
update that reads TEXT by length on its synchronous path follows.
The txiki.js runtime (zknpr/txiki.js 9875455, Actions run 40021160289)
replaces the connection-wide permitAttach with vacuumInto, which runs a
fixed VACUUM main INTO and accepts its destination only on the thread
executing that statement, only while it runs. With permitAttach, an
operation already submitted to the connection could attach the snapshot
path; the runtime's contract test now checks ATTACH jobs queued before and
after a snapshot. The worker's runVacuumInto becomes a single call, and
the withdrawal handling, the 'Invalid DB' match and releaseAsyncDatabase
go away with the permit.
The runtime also reads TEXT by length on its synchronous path, as it
already did on the thread pool and for binds, so NUL-containing TEXT is no
longer truncated there.
The desktop port passes its sidecar-compatible createCellTextDecoder, which implements only decode(); typing the parameter structurally keeps dev and the port identical here.
Commit the differential ATTACH/DETACH/VACUUM INTO fuzz as an opt-in lane
(tests/fuzz/, `npm run test:native-fuzz`, outside the unit glob) and a
native-fuzz workflow that runs it on ubuntu-24.04, ubuntu-24.04-arm,
windows-latest, macos-15-intel and macos-15. CI's native lanes cover
Linux x64 only.
The harness resolves the runtime through the extension's own
getNativeBinaryPath (now exported), so it exercises the binary a user on
that host gets. FUZZ_EXPECT_TARGET, set per matrix entry, fails the run
unless natives/<target> is the runtime exercised, and a missing runtime
fails instead of skipping.
The scratch harness multiplied its LCG in doubles. The product exceeds
2^53, so low bits were lost and the sequence fell into a 419-step cycle:
at the default seed its 40,000 statements were 95 distinct ones. The
generator now uses Math.imul (39,990 distinct of 40,000), and a run fails
if fewer than 90% of its statements are distinct.
Before fuzzing, the harness checks its detector: the worker's vacuumInto
export must register as a new file and as a write to the empty file. The
control-share floor is 25%, about half the lowest share measured (45.2%
singles-only, 50.7% at default counts). Fixtures live in an os.tmpdir()
mkdtemp directory removed in a finally block after the worker closes its
database, with retries for Windows. The oracle relocates paths in their
SQL-escaped form, and filenames split at path.basename so Windows paths
split too.
Local run (aarch64-macos, default counts): generated 40000, distinct
39990, sqliteWouldExecute 20279, workerTraces 0, workerRefused 30865,
workerOther 499 (EXPLAIN directly followed by U+FEFF, a syntax error).
sql.js 7245c26 (#634) bound TEXT with lengthBytesUTF8(value) as its byte
length. That count treats a lone surrogate as the first half of a pair, so
'x\uD800' was stored as 78EDA08000, with the terminator inside the value,
and '\uD83D中文' lost its last character and gained a NUL. 1.8.2
stored the first exactly and already lost the end of the second.
sql.js 35ac205 counts the bytes the way stringToUTF8 writes them and fails
loudly on a mismatch. Both values are now stored as the native runtime
stores them (78EDA080, EDA0BDE4B8ADE69687). Only the JavaScript glue
changes; the WASM binary and the native libraries are byte-identical.
Reported by the consumer review of 6bc70ff..cf64899.
The grid keeps TEXT containing NUL as bytes (decodedTextReproducesBytes),
but the primary-key checks still compared the decoded string alone. Now
that both engines return such a key whole, it passed that comparison, and
its contained cell sent the row down the size path: "column "k" is 3 bytes
and exceeds the 838860-byte inline limit". Inserts and updates minted an
editable identity for the same key.
Use decodedTextReproducesBytes in remapPrimaryKeyContainment and
encodeByteFaithfulPrimaryKeyRecordId, so a NUL key is read-only with a
reason that names the NUL and a NUL-key insert rolls back, as on the 1.8.2
native engine. The reason and error keep their existing wording and add
the NUL case.
native_real_smoke gains the real-binary coverage the review found missing:
bound NUL and lone-surrogate writes (byte-identical to WASM), NUL cells on
a native grid page arriving as bytes, and the NUL-key reason and rollback.
The changelog no longer claims exports changed (they already read raw
bytes) or that every connection contains NUL cells (tables wider than 999
columns check only key columns).
Reported by the consumer review of 6bc70ff..cf64899.
Refresh the five native binaries from zknpr/txiki.js Actions run
40086152581 (master@b45ac83), which carries the follow-ups from the
runtime review of 9875455:
- a statement whose rows fail to convert is reset instead of left
running, and every step of synchronous row conversion is checked;
- vacuumInto errors carry SQLite's message instead of the generic text
of their code, so a failed Save As or export snapshot says why;
- the authorizer calls uv_thread_self only for ATTACH of a named file;
- the scoped VACUUM INTO exception documents the invariant it relies on,
and the contract tests cover clearing after errors and interruption.
The run passed the SQLite contract tests, including the new
row-conversion test, on all five targets. refresh-natives.mjs verified
each artifact against the pinned run and digests.
Checked here: build, tsc, build-query-plan --check, npm test 2585/2585,
test:native-smoke 112/112 and the native ATTACH fuzz on aarch64-macos
(40,000 statements, 39,990 distinct, 0 traces) with the new binary.
Bump the extension and lockfile to 1.8.3 and file the unreleased notes
under it: the NUL and unpaired-surrogate TEXT fixes, the statement-scoped
export snapshot exception, SQLite's reason on failed snapshot writes,
the runtime re-pin and the five-target native fuzz lane.
VS Code still parses [label](command:id?args), https: and file: links in
the text extensions pass to notifications, modal messages and progress
titles, and opens them with allowCommands, so a click runs the command
with the JSON arguments from the link (microsoft/vscode
notificationLegacy.ts, notificationsViewer.ts:466, openerService.ts).
Its 2026-10-01 hardening (#339072, in 1.141) covers only VS Code's own
messages; 1.110 to 1.140 parse links in those too.
A crafted database controls text SQLite Explorer shows there. Exporting
a view that selects a missing column named
[Open details](command:workbench.action.terminal.sendSequence?...)
fails with "Export failed: no such column: t.[Open details](command:...)"
on the WebAssembly engine, and VS Code renders the link. Table, view and
file names reach import, export and Save As messages on both engines.
- src/notificationText.ts: plainNotificationText separates "](" with a
zero-width space, which leaves the text readable and VS Code's link
pattern nothing to match. plainNotificationError disarms an error's
message in place, keeping its class and code; plainErrors and
withPlainErrors apply it to command handlers and provider methods.
- Every notification, modal message, modal detail and progress title
that includes non-literal text goes through plainNotificationText.
- The custom editor provider (open, resolve, save, Save As, revert,
backup), the virtual file system provider and every command are
registered through the error wrappers, so errors VS Code displays
itself, such as "Failed to save", are disarmed too.
tests/unit/notification_links.test.ts drives a real WebAssembly engine
with a crafted view through the export command and the query console,
and a failing save through the registered editor provider, checking the
shown text with VS Code's own link pattern; each also checks its control
arm. A TypeScript AST scan requires every notification text to be
literal or pass through plainNotificationText, and every command and
provider registration to use the wrappers. With the call sites restored
to HEAD, four of the six tests fail; all six pass with the fix.

Explanation
The title "fix: release SQLite Explorer 1.8.3" names a release, and the changeset does contain the 1.8.3 release materials: the package.json version bump to 1.8.3, the CHANGELOG 1.8.3 entry, and the fixes they list. However, the title does not name the main technical fixes. Those are notification-text sanitization (plainNotificationText, plainErrors, withPlainErrors), NUL-containing TEXT handling in both engines, the native export move to vacuumInto, and the native fuzz workflow. The title is therefore partially related: it refers to a real aspect of the change (the release) but not the main code changes. It is also not vague, so it does not fall under the inconclusive criteria.

Sanitize undo/redo callback failures before rethrowing
When undo or redo fails with an error containing a crafted database identifier, this sanitizes the explicit toast, but the callback then rethrows the original error. These callbacks are not covered by the provider wrapper, and VS Code routes rejected undo/redo callbacks to its own error notification (upstream handler); on supported releases that parse notification links, the crafted [label](command:...) can still invoke a command when clicked. Sanitize the rejection before rethrowing in both callbacks.

Add a WASM grid assertion for NUL-containing TEXT.
This test proves that the WASM engine stores all bytes. It does not prove that fetchTableData returns the value as bytes through containUnrepresentableTextCells. Fetch the inserted row and assert that the value is a Uint8Array containing 63 00 64. The native smoke test covers the native engine, but not this WASM path. As per coding guidelines, “Cover changed behavior with regressions.”

Review comment at @tests/unit/raw_text_transport.test.ts around lines 123 - 124:
Extend the WASM NUL-containing TEXT regression test to call fetchTableData
through containUnrepresentableTextCells and assert the returned value is a
Uint8Array containing 63 00 64. Keep the existing engine.executeQuery storage
assertion intact.

The undo and redo callbacks of a custom-document edit reject back to
VS Code, which shows the error in its own notification. They now run
through plainErrors, like the registered commands and providers, and
the notification call-site test requires that for every object with
undo and redo callbacks.
The notification tests' fixture now uses workbench.action.showCommands.
plainNotificationError assigned error.message. DOMException defines
message as a getter without a setter, so in the strict bundle the
assignment threw a TypeError that replaced the original error, for
example an aborted save's AbortError. The message is now redefined as
an own property, only when it changes; an error whose message cannot
be redefined is replaced by a plain Error carrying it as cause.
Script mode replaced an ATTACH placeholder only when whitespace or the
end followed it, so a '?' followed by a comment stayed unbound and
attached a temporary database in both the worker and the control. It
also always bound the secret file, even when the generator had picked
the empty one. The script attach now binds the picked target, and the
harness asserts that no placeholder is left.
…faces
plainNotificationText now puts the zero-width space after every "]",
not only before "(", so text that VS Code rewrites before parsing it
cannot join a "]" to a "(". The webview's toast methods now show their
message and detail through it, and the import progress message does too.
The notification call-site test now also checks progress messages,
input box prompts and registerTextEditorCommand. It refuses options it
cannot read (shorthand, spread, variables), indirect uses of window or
its show*Message functions, and concatenations with a disarmed part.
The method names passed to withPlainErrors are checked against
vscode.CustomEditorProvider and vscode.FileSystemProvider, so a
misspelled name fails to compile instead of leaving a method unwrapped.
CUSTOM_EDITOR_METHODS moves above registerEditorProvider's doc comment,
which had attached to the constant.
Modal dialogs do not parse links, so the security note names
notifications and progress titles only. The fuzz result names the run
against this release's runtime (b45ac83, run 40089403712), and the
native copy error note no longer implies every failure used to read
"SQL logic error".
Both engines now return TEXT containing NUL whole, so the external
editor's checks, which compared the engine's string with the decoded
stored bytes, started accepting it. VS Code guesses UTF-16 from the NUL
bytes of such a file, so the editor showed other text than the cell
holds. The read and write checks now use the grid's rule, exported from
cell-containment as decodedTextReproduces: TEXT containing NUL stays
bytes, and the editor refuses it with the existing Hex inspector
message. website/public/sqlite-viewer/worker.js is regenerated.
VS Code shows an edit's label in its "Could not undo" warning, and an
input box's validation message, through the same link parsing as
notifications. Both now go through plainNotificationText.
plainNotificationText leaves a "]" that already has its zero-width
space alone, so an error disarmed in place and rethrown through a
wrapper does not grow. plainNotificationError gives an own data
property, such as a sealed error's message, a new value instead of
redefining it, and leaves a message that is not text to VS Code.
showToast passes a null detail through as no detail.
The notification call-site check now runs as a function that the test
also applies to a list of code shapes: quoted and computed keys,
duplicate keys, spreads anywhere, window bound through any vscode
import, quick pick prompts, created input boxes, validateInput return
values, undo labels, and aliased report and registration functions.

Problem
1.8.2 has a security issue and several data and runtime problems.
'\uD83D中文'through 1.8.2's glue storesEDA0BDE4B8AD, dropping文(measured on the v1.8.2vendor/sql.jsbuild).permitAttach(path)applied to the next statement prepared on the connection, including one queued before it. The worker's statement guard and its one-request-at-a-time order kept other SQL from using it.Solution
src/notificationText.ts): text that comes from a database file is sanitized before VS Code shows it in a notification, modal message, progress title or message, input box prompt or validation message, or as an undo label. Errors that the custom editor provider, the virtual file system provider, the commands and the undo/redo callbacks hand back to VS Code are sanitized the same way and keep their class.35ac205) binds TEXT with the byte countstringToUTF8actually writes, and throws if the counts differ. The stored bytes now match the native engine's.vacuumInto(path). It runs a fixedVACUUM main INTO ?and accepts the destination only on the thread running that call, only while it runs.b45ac83, from a review of9875455):vacuumIntoerrors carry SQLite's message;uv_thread_selfonly for ATTACH of a named file;native-fuzz.ymlruns the native ATTACH/DETACH/VACUUM INTO differential fuzz on all five native targets, on dev pushes and pull requests to dev that change the harness, the runtimes, the worker client, the toolchain or the workflow.Architecture
Provider and command wrappers.
withPlainErrors(provider, methods)returns a proxy. Listed methods run on the real provider and rethrow through the sanitizer. Every other function is bound to the provider, so private fields and event properties keep working, and absent optional methods stay absent, which VS Code uses to detect capabilities. The method lists are checked againstvscode.CustomEditorProviderandvscode.FileSystemProviderat compile time.plainErrorsdoes the same for command handlers and the undo/redo callbacks. Errors are changed in place, sovscode.CancellationError,vscode.FileSystemErrorand a DOMException such as an aborted save's AbortError keep their identity, name and code; only an error whose message cannot be changed (a frozen one) is replaced by a plainErrorwith it ascause. Sanitizing is idempotent, so an error rethrown through a wrapper again does not change further.Enforcement.
notification_links.test.tsparsessrc/with the TypeScript compiler. Every notification message anddetail, progress title andreportmessage, input box and quick pick prompt, validateInputreturn value and undo label must be a literal,l10n.tof a literal, a conditional or concatenation of those, or a sanitized value; concatenations may not contain a sanitized part. Options must be written in place, vscode.windowand the checked functions may only be used directly, and everyregisterCommand, registerTextEditorCommand, registerCustomEditorProvider, registerFileSystemProviderand undo/redo callback must use the wrappers. The same test runs the check over a list of code shapes it must report, and over a compliant list it must accept.Scoped snapshot exception. The authorizer refuses ATTACH and DETACH on every connection, except
''and the destination of a runningvacuumInto, on the thread running it. Acceptance means "this thread, during this call". That equals "this statement" because nothing SQLite calls back into during the VACUUM can compile SQL on the connection: no SQL functions, hooks or busy handler are registered, and the progress callback runs no SQL. The runtime comment states this invariant. Acceptance is not one-shot, becausesqlite3_stepre-prepares a VACUUM afterSQLITE_SCHEMAand authorizes a new internal ATTACH of the same target.Per-file changes
