Error messages now provide clearer guidance when templates or linked resources cannot be found, including where the system searched and what item is missing.
Command-line and rendering errors now show consistent details across parsing, dry-run, and full-render operations. Other exception messages remain unchanged, with a fallback for errors that have no message.
Render-range options continue to support selecting a range or starting point, with the explicit range taking precedence when both are supplied.
The pull request moves parser and loader functionality into the plain-parser package and keeps compatibility re-exports in existing modules. It adds search guidance to selected CLI errors and removes many parser fixtures and tests.
Parser, concept, loader, node, and exception implementations are re-exported from plain_parser. Dependency lists add plain-parser==0.1.4 and remove networkx==3.6.1.
Many parser fixtures and test modules are deleted. Render-range tests are added.
Error guidance and CLI reporting plain2code.py, tests/test_user_error_message.py
user_error_message adds search-order guidance for template and resource lookup errors, with a representation fallback for empty exception messages. CLI error paths use the formatter. Tests cover the formatter.
A parser syntax error can become an unexpected API failure; fix the exception reference before merging.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to 9f7f1
The migration preserves the inspected resource-validation controls and existing application import paths. Risk is limited but not negligible: the dependency also changes required-module validation and definition ordering, and runtime compatibility across upgrades has not been fully established.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The external package now handles specification-controlled template and resource inputs within the application process. Resource reads retain the caller's filesystem authority and existing directory-join semantics; the inspected migration does not introduce a broader privilege boundary. Production tenant and deployment exposure are not established by the supplied evidence.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — Loader failures and application consumers share the delegated exception classes through the local exception shim. The inspected upstream loader raises those classes for binary content, oversized base64 and Liquid syntax failures rather than silently returning accepted content.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — The inspected transitions allocate fresh resource maps, template-tracking loaders and required-module accumulators per invocation. Exceptions prevent successful return of partial results, and required-module validation completes before the public parser returns. This establishes local ownership and failure behavior, not a blanket thread-safety guarantee for all parser dependencies.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — Keep application-boundary contract checks for binary and oversized-base64 rejection, failed-then-repeated parse isolation, and parsed-tree/hash compatibility when upgrading the parser package. These checks would guard against control drift after implementation ownership moves upstream.

Parser code moved to the plain-parser package, pinned to 0.1.4.
plain_file, plain_spec, concept_utils and plain2code_nodes are now
re-exports; removing them is a follow-up.
mistletoe and python-frontmatter arrive through plain-parser but stay
pinned here so an automatic mistletoe upgrade cannot change the spec
hashes stored by partial rendering.
When the API returns error_code == "PlainSyntaxError", the handler references plain2code_exceptions.plain_syntax_error. The compatibility module defines PlainSyntaxError, not plain_syntax_error. This raises AttributeError instead of the intended parser exception.
Suggested fix
- raise plain2code_exceptions.plain_syntax_error(message or "Unknown error")+ raise plain2code_exceptions.PlainSyntaxError(message or "Unknown error")

Update the handler’s `PlainSyntaxError` error-code branch to reference the
imported `PlainSyntaxError` symbol from the compatibility module instead of the
undefined lowercase attribute, so it raises the intended parser exception.

@bananaplain Yes—the bug is pre-existing. I checked the PR base: codeplain_REST_api.py, Line 170, already references plain_syntax_error, while the exception module defines PlainSyntaxError.
A follow-up fix is appropriate. I should have identified this as an existing bug, not a regression from #348.
