Part 5 of 5 of the dependency scanner (stack below). Phases 5 (tab) and 6 (production ranking) of the plan ship together: the production column threads through the same view files.

Dependencies tab

A new Security Center tab: open findings by severity, each connected repository with its last scan (unsupported, too large, skipped or failed lockfiles say why) and a Scan now button, and the vulnerable packages table with status and repository filters and a sheet for triage (dismiss or accept the risk with a reason, admins only).

Ranked by what runs in production

runningCommitsQuery reads which commit each service served traffic from over the last day (service overview rollups, vcs.ref.head.revision); the commits map to repositories through the synced commit history, and each finding lists the services running a commit whose scan matched it. Findings rank by severity, how the code depends on the package and that traffic, so a medium advisory in a busy service outranks a high one nothing deploys. Running commits not scanned yet are queued (ten per read). Without commit telemetry the tab says how to add it; if telemetry cannot be read, findings still list, ranked by severity.

Also: review fixes to the scanner and catalog (blobs read raw, a skipped lockfile is not read as deleted, a commit already scanned or being scanned is not read again, parse cache keyed by parser version, OSV paging capped, a scan past the advisory cap stores what it read without reconciling).

Verification

  • 19 scene tests (states, scan now and polling, filters, triage, production column and hint), route test, web typecheck.
  • Backend: production join and ranking tests, service tests (running commits joined, failed scans retried after an hour, a capped number queued per read, telemetry down), SQL catalog baseline updated.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added a Dependencies page in Security Center to review lockfile scan results across connected repositories.
    • Filter findings by status and repository, view severity and production-service context, and inspect advisory, package, and fix details.
    • Request repository scans, track their progress, and dismiss, accept risk for, or reopen findings.
    • Added clear states for repositories that are not connected or scanned, and for loading and scan issues.
  • Improvements
    • Findings now reflect production-service activity, helping surface higher-risk dependencies.
    • Large advisory results can indicate how many findings were omitted instead of failing when the result limit is exceeded.

The Security Center gets a Dependencies tab: a stat rail of open findings
by severity, each connected repository with its last scan (lockfiles that
were unsupported, too large, skipped or failed say why) and a Scan now
button, and the vulnerable packages table with status and repository
filters and a sheet for triage (dismiss or accept the risk with a reason,
admins only).

Findings are joined to telemetry: runningCommitsQuery reads which commit
each service served traffic from over the last day (service overview
rollups, vcs.ref.head.revision), the commits map to repositories through
the synced commit history, and each finding lists the services running a
commit whose scan matched it. The table ranks by severity, how the code
depends on the package and that traffic, so a medium advisory in a busy
service outranks a high one nothing deploys. Running commits not scanned
yet (or whose scan failed over an hour ago) are queued, ten per read.
Without commit telemetry the tab says how to add it.

Review fixes to the scanner and catalog: blobs are read raw, lockfiles
past the cap are recorded as skipped instead of read as deleted, a commit
already scanned or being scanned is not read again, a tree too large to
list fails once instead of on every push, the parse cache key carries a
parser version, OSV paging is capped and a scan past the advisory cap
stores what it read without reconciling.

Walkthrough

This change adds a Security Dependencies page and extends dependency scanning with production telemetry. The service returns running-commit and production-coverage data, ranks findings using production traffic, and supports scan requests and finding triage in the page.

Changes: Dependency Security

Layer / File(s) Summary
Production telemetry query and contracts
packages/domain/src/http/dependency-scan.ts, packages/query-engine/src/ch/queries/releases.ts, packages/query-engine/src/ch/index.ts, packages/query-engine/src/__sql_baseline__/catalog.sql, packages/query-engine/src/benchmark/builders.ts
The HTTP schemas add running commits, production services, and coverage counts. The query engine adds a capped query for service traffic grouped by commit.
Scan and advisory processing
packages/backend/src/services/dependency-scan/DependencyScanner.ts, packages/backend/src/services/security/PackageAdvisoryCatalog.ts, packages/backend/src/services/integrations/vcs/vendor/github/*, packages/backend/src/services/dependency-scan/DependencyScanner.test.ts, packages/backend/src/services/security/PackageAdvisoryCatalog.test.ts, packages/backend/scripts/depscan-vs-osv-scanner.ts, packages/backend/package.json
The scanner updates scan reuse, parser cache keys, concurrency, and incomplete-result reporting. The advisory catalog caps vulnerability reads and reports omitted counts. GitHub blob retrieval now returns raw text.
Production telemetry and finding enrichment
packages/backend/src/services/dependency-scan/production.ts, packages/backend/src/services/dependency-scan/DependencyScanService.ts, apps/api/src/routes/internal/dependency-scan.http.ts, packages/backend/src/services/dependency-scan/*test.ts
The service reads running commits, queues eligible scans, associates findings with running services, and returns production coverage and risk-ranked findings. The route passes tenant context to repository and finding reads.
Dependencies page state and wiring
apps/web/src/page/security/dependencies/model.ts, apps/web/src/page/security/dependencies/derive.ts, apps/web/src/page/security/dependencies/command.ts, apps/web/src/page/security/dependencies/update.ts, apps/web/src/page/security/dependencies/subscription.ts, apps/web/src/page/security/dependencies/index.ts, apps/web/src/page/registry.ts, apps/web/src/route/*, apps/web/src/page/security/kit/layout.ts
The page model and update logic handle data reads, scan polling, filters, and finding triage. Routing, page registration, and Security navigation include the Dependencies page.
Page rendering and interaction coverage
apps/web/src/page/security/dependencies/view*.ts, apps/web/src/page/security/dependencies/dependencies.scene.test.ts
The page renders repository scans, findings, production coverage, loading and empty states, and a finding detail sheet. Scene tests cover scans, filters, and triage.
Lab scenarios and fixtures

Merge Risk: Moderate · up to aa4f0

The Dependencies tab can attribute running services to the wrong repository when repositories share a commit SHA. It can also hide a deployed vulnerable package once an organization has more than 500 findings. Earlier concerns about misleading clean states, sampled-span ranking, row caps and requeued scans also remain open. These should be resolved or explicitly accepted before merge.

Making production required left updateFinding's response without it; the
triage response now carries an empty list (the page re-reads findings
after a triage). Also drops an unused severity list knip reported.

- The All filter's empty state reads "No findings", not "No all findings".
- A finding in a repository whose running commit is still being scanned
reads "Scanning" instead of "Not running".
- The triage reason is capped untrimmed, as the API checks it.

The Dependencies tab's two reads (repositories and findings) each ran the
same running-commits query: 34 reads for 17 page loads on the preview.
The read is edge-cached per org for a minute, so the second one hits it.

Preview test (894cbd7, separate agent)

The Preview org has no GitHub connection, so the tab shows the connect on-ramp; the scanner itself was verified end to end against live GitHub (see #2044).

Check Result
Dependencies tab in the Security strip, active on click and deep link, survives reload pass
No repositories: "Connect a repository to scan its dependencies", Connect GitHub links to Integrations pass

tab 390

Traces (deployment.environment = pr-2045, 17 page loads)

Page load 4ea0caf445381dbb98b5979e160e2248: the tab's two reads run in parallel, about 70 ms each server-side.

Span p50 p95
DependencyScanService.listFindings 72 ms 535 ms (one cold warehouse read)
DependencyScanService.listRepositories 69 ms 144 ms
DependencyScanService.readProduction 48 ms 108 ms
DependencyScanStore.latestBranchScans 6 ms 15 ms

Each read runs one Postgres query per table and no N+1. One finding: readProduction ran twice per page (34 for 17 loads), because both reads ran the same running-commits warehouse query. Fixed in 56c6484: that read is edge-cached per org for a minute, so the second read hits the cache.

- The tab reads repositories and findings together and both queued the same
unscanned commits; only the repositories read queues now.
- A running commit whose scan failed read as Scanning until the hourly

Unverified finding
Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.

Exclude non-production traffic from production ranking.

If staging spans carry a valid commit SHA, both query branches include them. DependencyScanService then associates those rows with findings and passes their span counts to riskScore as production traffic. Filter DeploymentEnv in both branches through the runningCommitsQuery source in packages/query-engine/src/ch/queries/releases.ts. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

A failed scan shows "No known vulnerable packages".

A repository whose latest scan failed keeps a non-null latestScan with packageCount 0. Two things follow from that:

  • scannedCount in view.ts counts the failed scan as scanned, so the page skips firstScan.
  • With the default open filter and no rows, this branch calls cleanState. The tab then says "No known vulnerable packages" and "checked 0 packages" for a scan that read nothing.

Only the small "Scan failed" badge in the repository panel shows the real state. Users can read the clean message as a security all-clear.

Do not call cleanState while any repository's latest scan failed. Show a message that says the scan did not read the dependencies.

Add this helper above findingsSection:

const hasFailedScan = (repositories: ReadonlyArray<DependencyScanRepository>): boolean =>
	repositories.some((repository) => repository.latestScan?.status === "failed")

Adjust the wording to match product copy. The hasFailedScan guard is the important part. The fallback branch still applies when a non-default filter is active, so the failed-scan copy there is optional.

A repository whose latest scan failed still has latestScan set with packageCount 0, so view.ts:34 skips firstScan and the open filter falls through to cleanState: the tab announces "No known vulnerable packages" and "checked 0 packages" for a scan that read nothing. Only the repository panel's badge says "Scan failed".

Scope the truncated-tree short-circuit to branch-head scans. Explicit-commit production scans can now requeue on every read.

The listScans check is not filtered by commit or trigger. Assume a repository's tree is truncated and its last scan is a failed TREE_TOO_LARGE scan. Then a production scan of an explicit commit returns Unchanged before startScan, so no scan row exists for that commit.

needsScan in production.ts returns true for a commit with no scan row. queueProductionScans therefore queues the commit again on every listRepositories call, including each poll. Each job calls fetchTreeFiles, which is a GitHub tree read. The previous behavior recorded a failed row and retried after RESCAN_AFTER_MS.

The "same failure on every push" reasoning applies only to branch-head scans. Restrict the check to defaultBranchHead scans. A production scan then records its own failed row and retries hourly.

Update the truncated-tree short-circuit guarded by tree.truncated so it applies
only to defaultBranchHead scans; let explicit-commit production scans continue
to record their own failed scan and retry through the existing flow.

Use sample-weighted traffic for ranking.

bSpanCount counts stored spans, not estimated traffic. With different sampling rates, a busier service can rank below a quieter one, and the displayed spans/day is understated. serviceOverviewWindows already provides bEstimatedSpanCount for this purpose. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Update the ranking aggregation in the release query to sum
serviceOverviewWindows’ bEstimatedSpanCount instead of bSpanCount, so ranking

Do not silently drop running commits beyond the cap.

When more than 200 service/environment/commit rows exist, the remaining commits never reach the scan queue. If another service is linked, findings on an omitted commit can also display “Not running”. Paginate the rows, or expose incomplete coverage and avoid negative production claims for omitted commits. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Update the query applying .limit(RUNNING_COMMITS_CAP) so rows beyond the cap are

explicitly mark coverage as incomplete and prevent negative production claims

Maple review

🟢 Confidence 10/10 · safe to merge. The carried-over failed-scan empty state at view-findings.ts:374 is unchanged; the queueing, ranking and triage paths are pinned by service and scene tests.
1 note · tests covered · risk medium · 2/2 new units observable

Adds the Dependencies tab and ranks findings by production traffic; the ranking service, cached warehouse read and admin-gated triage hold up and are tested. The failed-scan empty state at view-findings.ts:374 is unchanged, and the McpQueryError issues traced to registry.ts are untouched by this change.

  • New dependencies Security Center page: repositories, scan states, findings table, triage sheet
  • runningCommitsQuery and production.ts rank findings by severity, relation and service traffic
  • listFindings joins production matches and queues unscanned running commits, ten per read
  • Scanner fixes: raw blob reads, scanned commits skipped, versioned parse cache, capped OSV paging

Do not assign a shared SHA to one arbitrary repository.

If two connected repositories contain the same commit SHA, findCommitsByShas returns both rows, but this map retains only one repository ID. Every service reporting that SHA is then attributed to that repository. The repository list, scan queue, and finding production associations can show the wrong result. The VCS store permits the same SHA in different repositories and does not order this lookup. Preserve the ambiguity until telemetry supplies repository identity, or leave ambiguous services unlinked. Update the `repositoryOf` mapping so it preserves every connected repository
associated with a commit SHA instead of overwriting duplicates; when attributing
services, link only unambiguous SHAs and leave ambiguous services unlinked until
telemetry provides repository identity.

Apply the findings limit after production ranking.

store.listFindings selects at most 500 rows by severity and update time before this sort runs. If more than 500 findings share a severity, a deployed older finding can be excluded while a newer finding with no production usage remains. The Dependencies tab cannot show that deployed finding, even when its risk score would rank it first. Fetch candidates before applying the final limit, or rank and limit in a query that includes production usage. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Update the `listFindings` flow and `ranked` calculation so the 500-row limit is
applied only after ranking includes production usage; fetch enough candidates
before ranking, or rank and limit in a query that accounts for production usage,
so higher-risk deployed findings are not excluded by severity and update-time
ordering.
