The trace waterfall now shows what each span called and what runs each service, the way Jaeger and Elastic APM do.

  • Left of the span name: the system the span called. Precedence is LLM vendor (gen_ai.provider.name / gen_ai.system), then database (db.system.name), then messaging (messaging.system), then RPC (rpc.system). Brand marks are used where we have one (Postgres, Redis, ClickHouse, Kafka, NATS, RabbitMQ, Pub/Sub, Anthropic, OpenAI...), otherwise a generic glyph. The slot is reserved on every row so names stay aligned.
  • In the service label (rows where the call path enters a service): the Effect mark when the Effect SDK reported the span (telemetry.sdk.name), else the runtime from process.runtime.name, falling back to telemetry.sdk.language. The Cloudflare Worker mark still wins on Worker spans. Child rows in the same service no longer repeat a platform icon.
  • Query: spanHierarchyQuery projects 4 more span keys and 3 more resource keys. Both maps were already read, so the extra cost is a few short strings per span.

The resolver is waterfall/tech.ts. It reuses getDbStyle + DB_ICON (service map), resolveRuntimeGlyph, and modelVendorIcon (agent sessions).

Today in our own prod data, telemetry.sdk.language is empty on most services and process.runtime.name is set more often, which is why the runtime name comes first. Only services that set telemetry.sdk.name=effect get the Effect mark, so most of our Effect services don't get it yet. Making the Effect SDK report it everywhere is a separate follow-up.

Screenshots

These come from /lab/worst-case, whose fixture spans now carry these attributes. "Before" is main's row code over the same fixture.

Before After
Demo, dark
Demo, light
Worst case (long names, 60 deep), dark
Worst case, light

Verification

  • tech.test.ts: precedence, LLM vendor mapping, case and padding, unknown systems, Effect vs. runtime vs. language fallback.
  • Waterfall scene test: the marks render as labelled images, and the runtime mark appears once per service entry.
  • apps/web traces/service-map/lab tests: 128 pass. query-engine src/ch: 831 pass. The SQL baseline is refreshed.
  • apps/web typecheck is clean. oxlint -c .oxlintrc.effect.json reports 0 errors on the changed files.

Note

GET /v2/traces/{id} returns this projected map as-is, so each span already lists about 20 attribute keys with "" values, and this adds 7 more. Dropping empty values there would be a separate change to the public response.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Trace waterfall rows now show technology markers for supported databases, AI providers, messaging systems, RPC systems, and service runtimes.
    • Span-kind labels are hidden on narrower screens for a cleaner layout.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Empty span attributes no longer appear as options in “Color by.”
    • Technology markers are aligned consistently, including on rows without a marker.

…vice

Each span row gets a brand mark left of its name for the system it called
(LLM vendor, then database, messaging, RPC), and the service label carries the
runtime or the Effect mark. The span hierarchy query projects the extra span and
resource keys the marks read.

Both fixed in 67de100.

  • F1: GEN_AI_PROVIDERS now carries a display name next to each slug (OpenAI, xAI, Mistral, AWS Bedrock, Vertex AI, watsonx...). Unknown providers fall back to title case. Tested in tech.test.ts.
  • F2: countKeys now counts only non-empty values, so the query's "" projections no longer take Color-by slots. That restores server.address / net.peer.name and also fixes the same displacement that already happened with the existing projected keys. Tested in timeline.scene.test.ts.

F3 fixed in d191554: the database mark's label now goes through the trace flow's existing humanizeDbSystem (Oracle, SQL Server, DynamoDB..., title case for the rest), so it matches the messaging and RPC labels. Tested in tech.test.ts.

Maple review

🟢 Confidence 10/10 · safe to merge. View-only change plus seven projected attribute keys; every resolver branch is pinned by tech.test.ts and the render by the waterfall scene test.
no findings · tests covered · risk medium

Adds a technology mark left of each waterfall span name and a runtime/Effect mark in the service label, backed by three more projected resource keys. The label and precedence logic is well tested and I found nothing that breaks as written.

  • spanTech marks the called system: gen_ai, then db, messaging, rpc
  • serviceRuntime marks the service's Effect SDK or runtime; Cloudflare still wins
  • spanHierarchyQuery projects messaging.system, rpc.system, both gen_ai.* and three runtime keys
  • countKeys skips the query's empty projections so Color-by lists real keys

Fixed since the last review

  • ✅ F3 · Unrecognised db.system values show up lowercase in the mark label

d191554 · What was checked, coverage and telemetry details are on the Maple / review check. Reply "won't fix" to dismiss a finding, or mention @maple-review-bot to ask about one.

Preview test (app-pr-2046.maple.dev, d191554)

A separate agent signed in to the preview and tested the waterfall headlessly on the seeded demo traces: 4 traces in depth, plus a survey of 8 more.

Passed

  • Marks match the span data in the span panel: pg.query has db.system.name=postgresql and shows the Postgres mark. The worker span has messaging.system=demo-queue and shows the generic queue mark labelled "Demo Queue". The demo services report telemetry.sdk.language=nodejs with no process.runtime.name, so they correctly fall back to Node.js, with no Effect mark.
  • Each mark is a role=img with a matching aria-label and title. Root rows with no system keep the 12px slot.
  • Names stay aligned (measured), and no mark overlaps a name or the service label.
  • Color-by lists only keys with values, so no rpc.system or gen_ai.* on these traces.
  • Dark and light both render cleanly. The only console noise is the existing dashboards live-sync 503 on preview:web and the Clerk dev-key warning.

Found and fixed: at a 900px window the service name was squeezed to one letter, because the span kind text never shrank. 49d6f04 hides the kind on narrow rows. Re-measured on the preview:

Viewport demo-frontend name, before after
1024 42 / 78px 78 / 78px
900 4.8 / 78px 46.8 / 78px
768 25 / 78px 67 / 78px
900px, before fix 900px, after fix
Waterfall, dark Waterfall, light Queue span Color by

Not covered on the preview: the seeded data has no LLM, Effect, Cloudflare, RPC, missing-span or deep traces. Those are covered by tech.test.ts, the waterfall scene test and the /lab/worst-case screenshots in the description.

Traces (deployment.environment = pr-2046)

Span Env n p50 p95 Errors
WarehouseQueryService.executeSql (query.context=spanHierarchy) pr-2046 32 41ms 98ms 0
same production, same window 12 50ms 103ms 0
QueryEngine.getSpanHierarchy (browser) pr-2046 23 487ms 1339ms 0

The extra projected keys don't add measurable warehouse time. The slowest browser fetch (2.1s, trace 5f973ed2066fd756a058edecc595d4fa) was a cold headless page load where a dozen requests ran in parallel at about 2s each, including untouched ones like LoadInfraPresence (2.1s). That time is client and network queueing, not this query. No N+1 and no new spans: the page makes one hierarchy fetch per trace, as before.

Exercise explicit empty projections on mixed spans.

The hierarchy query includes every projected key on every span. The current fixture leaves the nested leaf map empty, so Object.entries never sees its projected keys. Add an explicit empty projection to that leaf and keep the expected server.address count at 2.

Read Worker platform attributes from the resource.

If a Worker reports cloud.platform: "cloudflare.workers" as a resource attribute, rowPlatform cannot detect it here. The trace query does not project resource cloud.platform either. The service label therefore shows its runtime mark instead of the intended Cloudflare Worker mark. Project that resource key and detect the Worker using both attribute maps before selecting the runtime. OpenTelemetry defines cloud.platform as a cloud resource attribute.
