Android: sync a paired Mi scale when it wakes up - #612
On Android, a paired Mi scale is now synced automatically when it wakes up. Before, the only way to sync it was the button on the Devices page (the headless pass runs at boot, not on a schedule).
While the app process is alive, a new ScalePresenceWatcher runs a short low-power scan (8 s on, then 20 s off) filtered to the paired scale's address. When it hears the scale, it runs the normal SessionLink.sync() session, then rests for 3 minutes so a scale that stays awake isn't synced in a loop. The session also reads the stored history, so a missed window delays a weighing but never loses one.
The scan goes through the existing withScanLock. It does not skip while the band is away: the band reconnects through the OS autoConnect, not a scan, so a scale scan does not queue it. The wait for the scan to end is bounded (window + 5 s); if the stop event is lost the watcher stops the scan itself, so the lock is always released. A start() made while a stopped loop is still draining restarts it afterwards.
Android only, and not in the headless/background path.
Files
lib/ble/scale_presence.dart: new watcher
lib/state/app_state.dart: starts it on Android (foreground app only), stops it in dispose
test/ble/scale_presence_test.dart: 5 tests (hit syncs once then cools down; nothing heard or nothing paired; a throwing scan backs off; a start during a draining stop restarts; a stop cancels a pending restart)
test/scan_lock_entry_points_test.dart: scale_presence.dart added to the allowlist of files that may call FlutterBluePlus scan functions. It does so only inside withScanLock.
No protocol or analytics dependency, no schema change, no kAlgoVersion bump.
Tested
Unit tests pass, flutter analyze is clean on the changed files.
On a real Mi scale (Xiaomi phone, debug build, no taps on the phone): the watcher found the scale, synced, and the weighing appeared as the profile weight.
Battery, measured with dumpsys batterystats on that phone: Bluetooth was estimated at 0 mAh of 84 mAh total. This is a model estimate on one phone over a few hours, not a full-day measurement.
Not tested
A WHOOP reconnect while the watcher is running (a pending Android autoConnect next to the low-power scale scan). Not run on a real strap.
A full day of battery use.
iOS (the watcher is Android only).
Known limits
Fixed duty cycle (about 29% scan time) and a flat 3-minute cooldown; a second weighing inside the cooldown waits for the next window after it. The code comment says to move to a long-lived filtered scan if a real scale is seen missing its window.
Started when the app initialises and again when it resumes (a headless launch opened later); pausing does not stop it, the foreground service keeps the process.
If the fallback stopScan fails, the scan lock can be released while a scan is still running; bounded by the scan window (about 8 s).
A session that does not finish within 2 minutes is abandoned (the watcher then backs off for the cooldown).
Two scales of the same adapter: SessionLink.sync() picks one paired row per adapter, so the scale that was heard may not be the one synced. Not addressed here.
The scan-lock gate test only checks which files may scan, not that they scan inside withScanLock.
Only a failed cycle is logged ([scale-watch]); the per-cycle debug logs are removed.
A scale heard in the instant between a stop() and a start() is not synced until the next wake (a delay, not a lost reading).
Summary by Sourcery
Enable automatic Android Mi scale synchronization when a paired scale wakes up.
New Features:
Automatically detect paired Mi scale wake-ups on Android and trigger synchronization without requiring a Devices-page action.
Enhancements:
Run low-power scale presence monitoring only while the app process is active, with cooldowns, timeout handling, cancellation, and scan-lock coordination to avoid repeated syncs and scan conflicts.
Tests:
Add coverage for scale detection, cooldown behavior, empty pairings, scan failures, session timeouts, and watcher restart/stop lifecycle handling.
Chores:
Allow the scale presence watcher as a controlled BLE scan entry point.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
On Android, the app can automatically detect a nearby paired Mi Scale 2 or Mi Scale Composition and sync its measurements while the app is open.
The app checks for scales periodically, so you don’t need to start each sync manually.
Automatic detection starts when the app is foregrounded and resumes when you return to the app with a paired scale.
The app skips the primary device and paired entries without a remote identifier.
A filtered low-power scan for the paired scale's remote id runs while the app
process is alive; on a hit the scale syncs through its SessionLink, then waits
a cooldown. Android only, not in the headless pass.

**Nearby devices can forge scale readings**
When a nearby attacker can spoof the Bluetooth address of a paired Mi scale and provide its expected GATT characteristics, a nearby attacker that advertises under a paired scale’s Bluetooth address is treated as that scale; `_syncSession` then invokes `SessionLink.sync()`, which connects and accepts scale GATT notifications without authenticating the peripheral. The attacker can make forged weights appear in the user’s profile without a sync tap.
Authenticate the scale before accepting readings, or require an equivalent trusted-device verification in the automatic-sync path.

**Wake sync targets wrong scale**
When more than one paired scale shares an adapter ID and a scale other than the row selected by `pairedRowOf()` wakes, `_pairedScales` retains only the adapter ID, and `_syncSession` passes that ID to `SessionLink.sync()`, which selects the active or newest row rather than the scale whose address was heard; the awakened scale’s readings remain unsynced.
Preserve the heard scale’s remote ID through `_pairedScales` and resolve `SessionLink.sync()` to that scale’s row.

<issue_to_address>
**Background scale sync bypasses gate**
When the Android app is paused after the foreground watcher starts and the watcher hears a paired scale, `AppState` starts the watcher but does not stop it when Android pauses the app; a later scan hit calls `_sync` and `SessionLink.sync()` directly, so a background sync runs outside `HeadlessSyncGate.tryRun` and can overlap other sync work.
Stop the watcher when the app pauses, or route any background sync it performs through `HeadlessSyncGate.tryRun` with skip-not-queue behavior.

</code_context>
<issue_to_address>
**Later scans overlap active scan**
When the scan-stop event is lost or times out and the fallback `stopScan()` call fails while scanning remains active, `_scan` consumes the `stopScan()` error and returns through `finally`, so `withScanLock` releases while the radio is still scanning; the next pairing or band scan overlaps it or fails.
Keep `withScanLock` from releasing until the radio is confirmed stopped, and handle stop failures without returning while a scan remains active.

<issue_to_address>
**A stuck session stops future scans**
When a BLE service-discovery operation or secondary-link-slot wait never completes, `_sync` is awaited without a watcher-level deadline, so a platform operation that never completes leaves `_run` stuck in that cycle and the watcher never scans again. `SessionLink` bounds connect and session execution, but service discovery and waiting for a secondary-link slot have no timeout.
Bound the complete sync attempt or add appropriate timeouts to the unbounded session operations so the watcher can resume scanning.

</code_context>
<issue_to_address>
**A stuck stop blocks all scans**
When the scan-stop event is lost and the fallback `FlutterBluePlus.stopScan()` call hangs, the fallback `stopScan()` future never completes, so `_scan` never returns from `withScanLock` and every later scan—including pairing scans—stays queued.
Bound the fallback stop call with a timeout and handle its timeout explicitly so the scan-lock body cannot wait forever.

<issue_to_address>
**Watcher outlives disposed state**
When `AppState` is disposed while `_initSteps()` is suspended before the watcher-start line, `_initSteps()` resumes and starts `ScalePresenceWatcher` after `dispose()` has already tried to stop it, so the watcher keeps scanning and syncing without an owner.
Check `_disposed` before starting the watcher and ensure disposal stops any watcher started during initialization.

</code_context>
<issue_to_address>
**Wake detection is slower than documented**
When a scan takes its full configured window and no hit changes the wait, `_run()` waits the full `gap` after each scan, so an 8-second scan followed by the default 20-second gap starts the next scan about 28 seconds later, not every 20 seconds; scale wake detection is delayed relative to the stated cadence.
If 20 seconds is the intended start-to-start cadence, subtract the scan duration from the post-scan wait; otherwise describe the 20 seconds as a post-scan gap.

<issue_to_address>
**Terminated watcher passes backoff test**
When a scan throws and the watcher exits rather than retrying after the cooldown, if a thrown scan terminates the watcher instead of scheduling a cooldown retry, the scan-throws test still passes: line 78 only checks that `scans` is 1 after 150 ms, so it cannot distinguish backoff from termination.
Assert that the watcher performs another scan after advancing past the cooldown, using a controllable clock or timer.

<issue_to_address>
**Unlocked watcher scan passes gate**
When the watcher’s scan is moved outside `withScanLock`, if `scale_presence.dart` calls `FlutterBluePlus.startScan` outside `withScanLock`, the scan-lock entry-point tests still pass because their loops skip every allowlisted file; they do not check locking within this file.
Add a check that verifies the watcher’s scan entry points are executed under `withScanLock`, rather than skipping the file entirely.

Bound scan startup and clean up late scans.
FlutterBluePlus.startScan can remain pending during Android permission or platform startup. Its timeout starts only after the platform call returns. This await can therefore hold withScanLock, and stop() can remain pending while pairing scans queue behind it.
Add a startup bound that also prevents a late scan from remaining active after cleanup. Do not release withScanLock while the underlying startup operation can still start a scan.

startScaleWatcher() runs during foreground initialization and resume, but the paused lifecycle path only calls pauseForBackground(). On Android, that method starts EdgeTracking, which keeps the process alive. ScalePresenceWatcher._run() can therefore continue scanning and call _sync after the UI is backgrounded. The watcher currently stops only during AppState.dispose(), so it does not honor the foreground-only lifecycle.

Handle errors from the scan-results subscription.
If the Bluetooth plugin reports a scan failure, it adds an error to onScanResults. This subscription has no onError handler, so the error escapes the watcher's try/catch and becomes an unhandled asynchronous error. Add an error handler that records the failure and lets the cycle enter its cooldown path. (pub.dev)

What
On Android, a paired Mi scale is now synced automatically when it wakes up. Before, the only way to sync it was the button on the Devices page (the headless pass runs at boot, not on a schedule).
While the app process is alive, a new
ScalePresenceWatcherruns a short low-power scan (8 s on, then 20 s off) filtered to the paired scale's address. When it hears the scale, it runs the normalSessionLink.sync()session, then rests for 3 minutes so a scale that stays awake isn't synced in a loop. The session also reads the stored history, so a missed window delays a weighing but never loses one.The scan goes through the existing
withScanLock. It does not skip while the band is away: the band reconnects through the OSautoConnect, not a scan, so a scale scan does not queue it. The wait for the scan to end is bounded (window + 5 s); if the stop event is lost the watcher stops the scan itself, so the lock is always released. Astart()made while a stopped loop is still draining restarts it afterwards.Android only, and not in the headless/background path.
