Related GitHub Issue

Part of #1948. Extracts the document-decoding boundary from #1999 into an independent prerequisite on main. Does not close the feature issue.

Description

  • Make PDF, DOCX, IPYNB and XLSX decoders consume mandatory byte buffers. Leaf decoders no longer accept an optional source or reopen a pathname.
  • Preserve explicit path-only extraction adapters for existing callers. They load document bytes at the entry boundary and delegate to buffer decoders.
  • Expose a disk-free buffer extraction entry point. Its path argument supplies format/diagnostic metadata only, never content I/O authority.
  • Separate XLSX byte decoding from pure formatting of an already-loaded workbook.
  • Preserve historical formatted text, line numbering, notebook trailing-newline/empty behavior, worksheet formatting, and ordinary path-reader behavior. Unsupported binaries passed through the path adapter remain rejected after a probe without a full payload read.

Scope and Independence

The initial standalone extraction boundary comprised the two production modules and their two package-local test suites (192 additions and 50 deletions). The coverage/review follow-up adds owned document fixtures, a real-parser suite, a backend coverage-provider version alignment and a reduction of old lint suppressions. There are no new runtime dependencies.

The initial four files matched the source versions in #1999 at b456cf5. The follow-up intentionally simplifies four redundant checks without changing output, and loads XLSX bytes directly without the stream concatenation copy. Everything outside extraction/testing remains on main, including the historical reader, approval policy, image helpers and mentions.

No verified-descriptor reader, cancellation, permission matching, raw-document API, batch tool, settings, lifecycle changes, changesets or changelog edits are introduced here. Reader wiring to the buffer entry point and descriptor-safety scenarios belong to #1999.

Regression Coverage

The extraction suites cover supplied ordinary bytes without filesystem access, empty buffers, unsupported binary bytes, notebook numbering/trailing newline and empty output, real XLSX byte decoding, workbook formatting, and path-adapter compatibility. Existing formatter/parser/extraction coverage is retained.

Verification

Latest validated head: 689914a, on Node 22.23.1, Vitest 4.1.11 and matching backend coverage-provider 4.1.11. The commits were squashed with an identical source tree to the previously validated head; only Git history changed.

  • Both complete production modules have exact 100% statements, branches, functions and lines, enforced with per-file thresholds and verified against raw JSON counters. No coverage ignores/exclusions were added.
  • Text extraction: 183/183 statements, 99/99 branches, 20/20 functions, 174/174 lines. XLSX extraction: 42/42 statements, 38/38 branches, 7/7 functions, 41/41 lines.
  • 141 extraction tests passed in three suites, including actual PDF/DOCX parser fixtures and an XLSX subarray that excludes another workbook in the same backing allocation.
  • Extended extraction/reader/mentions/provider validation passed: 646 tests in 19 suites.
  • Full monorepo tests passed: 13/13 Turbo tasks, including 10,242 backend tests passed and 39 skipped.
  • Monorepo lint and type checks passed (11/11 tasks each); scoped ESLint pruning, formatting and whitespace checks passed. Four old explicit-any suppressions were removed; no counts increased.
  • Normal pre-commit formatting/lint and pre-push type-check hooks remained enabled and passed. Binary fixture attributes preserve exact PDF/DOCX bytes across checkout.

The initial standalone extraction run passed all assertions but reported two Vitest RPC teardown rejections in an unchanged provider suite; an unchanged rerun passed. Latest follow-up verification passed without that error. Local results do not claim remote CI or reviewer approval on the newly pushed head.

Merge Order

Merge this extraction prerequisite first, then rebase #1999 onto updated main so these four files drop out of its diff. #1999 retains only reader integration and file-read safety. #1950 subsequently builds on those safety changes.

AI-Assisted Contribution

AI-assisted scope extraction with byte-identical source verification and independent compatibility/test validation. No visible webview/layout change is introduced.

Review status

Thanks for contributing. This comment tracks the review sequence and the next action.

Current step: Awaiting fresh human maintainer or CODEOWNER approval.

Automated review is complete for the latest commit but does not replace human approval.

Review-state labels are managed by this workflow; do not edit them manually. community-approved is managed the same way — do not add or remove it manually. It signals a fresh community code approval for the current head as an advisory priority only; maintainer review is still required.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Extract text from provided file contents for PDF, DOCX, notebook, and Excel files, as well as ordinary text.
    • Excel extraction supports formatting workbook contents across multiple sheets.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Improved handling of line breaks, repeated lines, and carriage-return overwrites in extracted text.
    • Excel extraction now handles empty columns and large worksheets more reliably, including continuing to subsequent sheets when a row limit is reached.
📝 Summary

Walkthrough

Text extraction now accepts buffers for supported document formats and plain text. Path-based extraction reads supported binary files before parsing. XLSX extraction loads a buffer and delegates workbook formatting to a synchronous function. Tests cover extraction, formatting, and line-processing behavior.

PDF, DOCX, and IPYNB extractors take buffers. extractTextFromBuffer dispatches supported formats and decodes other content as UTF-8. Path-based extraction reads supported binary files before invoking an extractor. Tests cover buffer extraction, parser errors, pathname isolation, metadata, and PDF/DOCX fixture output.

extractTextFromXLSX accepts a buffer and passes the loaded workbook to synchronous formatWorkbook. Tests cover buffer decoding, workbook formatting, and row truncation.
Line formatting and overwrite handling
src/integrations/misc/extract-text.ts, src/integrations/misc/__tests__/extract-text.spec.ts
Line-number stripping preserves trailing newlines. Tests cover run-length encoding and carriage-return overwrites at surrogate-pair boundaries.

The array-length check was removed as redundant: accessing the first element of an empty array yields a missing value without throwing, so the assignment preserves its previous behavior. The reader contract guarantees an array, and the response formatter checks that a range is present before destructuring it. This simplification does not change range validation—the old length check did not validate the bounds either.

Extract document decoding from PR Zoo-Code-Org#1999 as an independent prerequisite on main. Keep explicit path-only adapters and mandatory-buffer PDF/DOCX/IPYNB/XLSX decoding, preserve formatted output, and separate workbook formatting. Load XLSX buffers directly with precise typing and exact subarray boundaries. Include real PDF/DOCX fixtures and full per-file coverage, align the backend coverage provider with Vitest, and remove redundant conditions and legacy lint suppressions.

Build on the original document-extraction prerequisite from PR Zoo-Code-Org#2002. Preserve the remaining verified-descriptor, canonical-target approval, cancellation, legacy compatibility, image-helper and symlink-root allowlist changes from PR Zoo-Code-Org#1999, including the reviewed diagnostic/privacy fixes and regression coverage. Keep all extraction modules, fixtures, coverage tooling and suppression improvements owned by the prerequisite unchanged.
