Changes

Adds support for inline OTP identifier verification during native passkey signup. When a database connection requires OTP verification for an identifier such as email or phone, /passkey/register returns the list of identifiers to verify, and /oauth/token accepts the collected codes. Existing flows are unchanged when no verification is required.

Added

  • PasskeyVerificationMethod (EMAIL, PHONE, fromValue(...)): the identifier type used for verification codes. Values the SDK does not know are kept as-is, so a new identifier from the server does not break parsing.
  • PasskeyRegistrationChallenge.verificationRequired: List<PasskeyVerificationMethod>: the identifiers that must be verified with an OTP before tokens are issued. It is an empty list when the server asks for no verification. A small deserializer (PasskeyRegistrationChallengeDeserializer, registered in GsonProvider) is needed because Gson ignores Kotlin defaults for missing fields.
  • signinWithPasskey(..., verification: Map<PasskeyVerificationMethod, String> = emptyMap()) (both overloads): sends the OTP codes as the verification object to /oauth/token. Left out when empty. A blank code fails the request with an AuthenticationException (a0.auth.verification_code_empty) before any network call, using the existing RequestValidator mechanism.
  • signupWithPasskey(..., deliveryMethod: DeliveryMethod? = null): optional delivery_method (text / voice) for phone OTP. This reuses the existing passwordless.DeliveryMethod.
  • AuthenticationException:
    • isPasskeyVerificationRetryable: true when the error is invalid_grant with an auth_session in the body (a code was wrong and attempts remain), or invalid_request because a code was missing or empty.
    • passkeyAuthSession: the auth_session from the error payload, if any. It is null for the missing/empty-code case, where the original challenge's session is reused.
    • passkeyVerificationRequired: List<PasskeyVerificationMethod>?: the identifiers to re-prompt. Only set for the invalid_grant case.

Changed

  • AuthenticationException.isTooManyAttempts is now also true for HTTP 429 (the /passkey/register rate limit returns a plain-text body, so there is no error code to match). This widens an existing property for every 429.
  • signinWithPasskey (both overloads), signupWithPasskey and the PasskeyRegistrationChallenge constructor gain @JvmOverloads, so the previous call shapes keep working from Kotlin and Java.

Documentation

  • examples/passkeys.md: new "Passkey signup with identifier verification" section with Kotlin (coroutines) and Java samples. It covers collecting OTPs before creating the credential, the retry loop with the same credential, the two retryable cases, and a capped number of attempts.

Compatibility

  • Source-compatible for Kotlin and Java: existing call shapes keep compiling.
  • Binary caveat: Kotlin code compiled against 4.1.0 that calls the changed methods and omits the defaulted arguments needs recompiling, because the generated $default entry points change. Java callers are unaffected. Apps recompile against the new SDK, so this only matters for precompiled libraries that depend on Auth0.Android.

Testing

  • 24 new unit tests (MockWebServer and Gson):

    • verificationRequired absent (empty list), single, multiple and unknown identifiers; PasskeyVerificationMethod equality by value
    • delivery_method sent when set, left out when not
    • verification sent when set; left out by default and when empty
    • a blank code is rejected locally with no request sent
    • error handling: retryable invalid_grant, terminal invalid_grant, missing code and empty code (invalid_request), an unrelated invalid_request (not retryable), consumed session (403), mfa_required (not retryable), plain-text 429 via isTooManyAttempts
    • PasskeyRegistrationChallengeDeserializer: default, parsing, and the missing-field and non-object failures
  • Tested by hand on a physical Pixel 10 (Android 17) against a tenant with email OTP verification enabled:

    • happy path: OTP collected before the credential is created, then tokens issued
    • retry path: a wrong OTP returns a retryable error (invalid_grant with auth_session); resubmitting reuses the same credential and auth session with no second biometric prompt, then succeeds
    • blank code: rejected locally before the network call
  • Not covered on a device: the server's missing/empty-code error, mfa_required, HTTP 429 and delivery_method. These are covered by the unit tests only.

  • This change adds unit test coverage

  • This change adds integration test coverage

  • This change has been tested on the latest version of the platform/language

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 73836

Precompiled Kotlin clients using defaulted passkey calls or challenge copying can fail at runtime. The Kotlin example also hides terminal errors, and an unknown server identifier can appear as a null list item. Resolve or explicitly accept these risks before release.

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 73836

The new verification contract can lose requirements added by the server, and the Kotlin API changes can break precompiled authentication callers during upgrades. The request flow still delegates verification and token issuance to the authentication server; no authentication bypass was established.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · reliability · observed: The new typed contract cannot represent server-added verification identifiers, and retry parsing explicitly discards them. Applications relying on that list can receive an incomplete ownership-verification requirement set and cannot collect or submit the unsupported code through the typed API. This creates a compatibility and recovery failure when verification policy evolves, not a demonstrated bypass of server verification.
  • Medium · reliability · inferred: Adding defaulted parameters changes Kotlin synthetic default-call descriptors, and adding a data-class property changes generated copy descriptors. Precompiled Kotlin dependents using those entrypoints can fail with NoSuchMethodError when only the SDK is upgraded, disrupting authentication in mixed-version deployments. @JvmOverloads preserves the old normal method and constructor descriptors, but not these synthetic or copy descriptors. This exposure is conditional on consumers not being recompiled together.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The changed flow handles app-supplied email or phone OTPs, passkey credentials and authentication sessions for the configured tenant endpoint. The identified consequences concern affected registration/recovery flows and precompiled SDK dependents. No source evidence establishes additional cross-tenant authority or access to other data stores.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Whitespace-only codes attach a validator that raises AuthenticationException without including the code value. Existing request execution runs validators before network loading, and callback and coroutine execution delegate to that path. This is a local input check, not an ownership-verification control.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — The SDK constructs independent requests rather than coordinating a per-session transition. Credential lifecycle belongs to the platform and application; attempt limits, session consumption, replay rejection and concurrent-submission ordering depend on server behavior not established here. Reusing the credential and rotating the session in the example preserves the intended retry identity, but does not prove atomic registration or cleanup after terminal failure.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Preserve unknown verification identifiers as raw values, or expose an explicit unsupported-requirement state that prevents callers from mistaking an incomplete list for no required verification. Specify server guarantees for live retry sessions, terminal consumption and concurrent submissions before treating auth_session presence as proof that attempts remain.

Preserve the published Kotlin JVM signatures. Adding defaulted parameters changes synthetic default-argument entrypoints. Adding a data-class constructor property also changes the generated copy entrypoints. Previously compiled Kotlin clients can fail with NoSuchMethodError; @JvmOverloads does not preserve those entrypoints. (kotlinlang.org)

@utkrishtsahu Thanks for clarifying. The description update can document the limitation, but it does not restore binary compatibility. @JvmOverloads does not preserve the old Kotlin default-argument or data-class copy entrypoints.

This finding remains open as a compatibility limitation, not a documentation issue.

Done: verificationRequired is a non-null list that defaults to empty. Gson skips Kotlin defaults for missing fields, so I added a small deserializer (registered in GsonProvider) and a test that checks a response without the field gives an empty list.

Done. I added PasskeyVerificationMethod (EMAIL, PHONE) and used it for the map key, verificationRequired and passkeyVerificationRequired. I made it a small class instead of a strict enum so an identifier the SDK doesn't know yet is kept rather than dropped, and so it works from Java as PasskeyVerificationMethod.EMAIL. I used that name instead of IdentifierType.

yes retryable would be for two cases

Done. isPasskeyVerificationRetryable is true for invalid_grant with an auth_session (the identifiers come back in passkeyVerificationRequired), and for invalid_request with either "Missing required parameter: verification…" or "…is not allowed to be empty". The second case has no auth_session, so the original challenge's session is reused. Both are covered by tests.

Done. I used a RequestValidator, as MfaApiClient does. A blank code fails with an AuthenticationException (a0.auth.verification_code_empty) before any network call, and a test checks that no request is sent.

Done, rephrased as suggested

- Add PasskeyVerificationMethod and use it for verification codes and identifiers
- Retryable when invalid_grant has auth_session, or invalid_request for a missing/empty code
- Reject blank verification codes before the network call
- verification defaults to emptyMap; verificationRequired defaults to an empty list
- Reuse passwordless.DeliveryMethod instead of PasskeyDeliveryMethod
- Treat HTTP 429 as isTooManyAttempts; remove isTooManyRequests
- Add mfa_required test; update passkey docs

Nit: This check can be moved above the . this will avoid the serialization if the validation fails

Done. Blank codes are checked first, and if any are blank only the validator is added, with no serialization.

Changed the approach. isTooManyAttempts is back to the original code check, and a plain-text 429 now gets the code too_many_attempts when the exception is created, so neither || nor && is needed.

* `verificationRequired` as `null`. This builds the challenge through its constructor instead, so

why exactly do we need this Deserializer ?

It only existed to make an empty-list default work with Gson. I removed it and made verificationRequired nullable again, like the SDK's other optional lists (recoveryCodes, transports).

Why can't this be a simple enum ?

It's a simple enum now (EMAIL, PHONE). One limit: Gson maps an identifier it doesn't know to null, so a new server identifier would need an SDK update. passkeyVerificationRequired skips unknown values

- Retryable when invalid_grant or invalid_request carries an auth_session
- PasskeyVerificationMethod is a plain enum; verificationRequired is nullable
- Map plain-text 429 to too_many_attempts; keep isTooManyAttempts code-only
- Validate blank codes before serializing; reuse the client gson
- Update passkey docs and tests

Agreed, reverted. This PR no longer changes isTooManyAttempts or the plain-text error code. The passkey docs now tell apps to check statusCode == 429 for the signupWithPasskey rate limit.

Not every 429 means too_many_attempts. Keep isTooManyAttempts and the plain-text
error code unchanged from main, and document checking statusCode == 429 for the
signupWithPasskey rate limit.

Removed. Codes are now sent as-is, and a missing or empty code comes back from the server as a retryable invalid_request with an auth_session. I added a test that a blank code reaches the server unchanged.

Updated. passkeyVerificationRequired is now only set for invalid_grant and is null for invalid_request, and the KDoc says to use the challenge's verificationRequired in that case. I fixed the test mock to match.

`signupWithPasskey` is rate-limited. When the limit is hit, the request fails with an `AuthenticationException`

let's slightly correct this. If verification field in absent or email/phone code is empty, then the flow is retryable. Error returned in this case is invalid_request and auth_session. if verification is present but with incorrect otp code, then the flow is retryable but the error returned would be invalid_grant, auth_session and verification_required containing otp code is incorrect for which identifiers

Rewritten with your two cases: a missing or empty code returns invalid_request with auth_session (re-collect the challenge's identifiers), and a wrong code returns invalid_grant with auth_session and verification_required (re-collect those identifiers).

- Send verification codes as-is; the server reports missing/empty codes
- passkeyVerificationRequired is only set for invalid_grant
- Docs: describe the two retryable cases, drop the rate-limit note
